Limited Slip rear

Q: my wifes 98 ram 1500 qc has developed the noise again. it showed up at 1500 miles 2500 4000 8000 15000 and keeps coming back every 6 months. the noise is a grunch . it occurs on turns from dead stop after truck has traveled straight for some distance and the axle is warmed up. every dealer i took it to told me we cant hear it or normal it need this friction modifier. the last line is the one i fell for!! after it went out of warranty and started making the noise again i pulled the rear cover and found the clutches coming apart. literally.... broken pieces. back to the last dealer to look at it . needs rebuilt! 1500 bucks later its ok. like new! for exactly 11 months and 5000 miles. took it back nope nothing wrong. added the friction modifier for you.now 4 months later noise is back!! question is it possible to just remove the clutches and make this an open diff or is there more to it than this we love the truck cant stand the service. thanks for any input here. bob .

$1500 damn did you get ripped off! i just did a change from open to sure-grip for $800 and that included the setup and install plus gears bearings everything. however if you keep getting the problem with the factory unit try an auburn. they are made differently and i doubt you would have that problem. actually if you are not changing gear ratios and can read gear backlash its not hard to do the install yourself. auburn units sell for under $400. the install and setup by a good rearend shop should be right around $250. on thu 29 apr 2004 221103 -0400 bob graham12@comcast.net wrote my wifes 98 ram 1500 qc has developed the noise again. it showed up at 1500 miles 2500 4000 8000 15000 and keeps coming back every 6 months. the noise is a grunch . it occurs on turns from dead stop after truck has traveled straight for some distance and the axle is warmed up. every dealer i took it to told me we cant hear it or normal it need this friction modifier. the last line is the one i fell for!! after it went out of warranty and started making the noise again i pulled the rear cover and found the clutches coming apart. literally.... broken pieces. back to the last dealer to look at it . needs rebuilt! 1500 bucks later its ok. like new! for exactly 11 months and 5000 miles. took it back nope nothing wrong. added the friction modifier for you.now 4 months later noise is back!! question is it possible to just remove the clutches and make this an open diff or is there more to it than this we love the truck cant stand the service. thanks for any input here. bob .
