dan j.s. wrote budd cochran wrote what rpm do you want diesel locomotive engines and those enormous ship diesels have maximum speeds of only about 700-900 rpm yet the locomotive can be going 100+ mph. locomotives and ships are usually eletrical right the diesels just power the batteries... at least this is what i heard... navy ships up to a few years ago were primarily run by steam turbines that were fed from pressure fired boilers. the switch to gas turbine engines began about 20 years ago and i dont know where they are at present but none were ever run by electric motors that im aware of. old wwii subs operated by batteries when submerged but ran on diesel engines when on the surface but those things were scraped a long time ago. the uss sacramento aoe-1 had two main engines steam turbines that produced 50000 hp each. jerry .
