i am experiencing the same think on a 1983 ford f-250 with a 460. i know it is pre ignition but what changed to cause it to start now after 160000 miles. i have checked or replaced all the obvious like the vacuum advance but other than changing the timing or use better gas i am at a loss. just took a 4000 mile trip and it run goo up until the last few hundred miles. i have all new gas also so that isnt the problem. i am now wondering if it in in the egr system. i have checked the egr value and it is functioning ok but their is a couple of boxes before it that might not be working correctly and might not be opening the value when it is suppose to. i guess my next attemp to trouble shoot it will be to add a vacuum gauge to the line feeding the egr valve and see if it ever gets any vacuum. ron guy lee wrote hello all i have an 87 dodge ram 5.2l 4x4 automatic. lately ive noticed the engine knocking immediately after starting it and when driving highway speeds. im thinking that im screwed and it might be the rods. is there anything i should try before getting it rebuilt maybe some thicker oil or something; i have 10w30 in it now. thanks guy .

on both the above referenced high mileage vehicles the problem may be pinging due to excessive carbon build up in the combustion chambers. try a good combustion chamber cleaner and follow the directions on the label and see if that helps. if the problem is severe a second treatment may be necessary to alleviate the problem if thats what it is. mike check timing - spark plugs - wires sounds like pinging to me. hello all i have an 87 dodge ram 5.2l 4x4 automatic. lately ive noticed the engine knocking immediately after starting it and when driving highway speeds. im thinking that im screwed and it might be the rods. is there anything i should try before getting it rebuilt maybe some thicker oil or something; i have 10w30 in it now. thanks guy .

mike thanks for the suggestion. i have noticed a small amount of black water maybe carbon coming from my tailpipe. in fact i have splattered my wifes minivan a few times while cranking my truck. at first i thought it was oil but it wiped off easily. i wonder if the two are related... g on both the above referenced high mileage vehicles the problem may be pinging due to excessive carbon build up in the combustion chambers. try a good combustion chamber cleaner and follow the directions on the label and see if that helps. if the problem is severe a second treatment may be necessary to alleviate the problem if thats what it is. mike check timing - spark plugs - wires sounds like pinging to me. hello all i have an 87 dodge ram 5.2l 4x4 automatic. lately ive noticed the engine knocking immediately after starting it and when driving highway speeds. im thinking that im screwed and it might be the rods. is there anything i should try before getting it rebuilt maybe some thicker oil or something; i have 10w30 in it now. thanks guy .

ill check the timing when i get home. ive had issues setting the timing in the past. i finally took it to a mechanic who made it run better; however no one is perfect. thanks g check timing - spark plugs - wires sounds like pinging to me. hello all i have an 87 dodge ram 5.2l 4x4 automatic. lately ive noticed the engine knocking immediately after starting it and when driving highway speeds. im thinking that im screwed and it might be the rods. is there anything i should try before getting it rebuilt maybe some thicker oil or something; i have 10w30 in it now. thanks guy .

good suggestion but did that also with no difference. i usually use the water treatment. take about a quart and squirt it into the carb a little at a time. i do get some carbon build up on a different car and the water treatment takes care of it right away. ron mike simmons wrote on both the above referenced high mileage vehicles the problem may be pinging due to excessive carbon build up in the combustion chambers. try a good combustion chamber cleaner and follow the directions on the label and see if that helps. if the problem is severe a second treatment may be necessary to alleviate the problem if thats what it is. mike check timing - spark plugs - wires sounds like pinging to me. hello all i have an 87 dodge ram 5.2l 4x4 automatic. lately ive noticed the engine knocking immediately after starting it and when driving highway speeds. im thinking that im screwed and it might be the rods. is there anything i should try before getting it rebuilt maybe some thicker oil or something; i have 10w30 in it now. thanks guy .
