Is the local WalMart tire/auto store jerking me around?
From : jethro bodine
Q: my experiences with tire shops is that even when you provide the torque specification and specify on the service order to torque *only* with a torque wrench and the agree to do so the knuckleheads in the shop *still* use the ^&%*&% air impact wrench. they have always overtorqued the lugnuts. once it took over 150 ft/lb to break the lugnuts loose specified at 65 ft/lb now i just take the tire & wheel to them and do the r&r of the assembly myself. as for that wal-mart tire/auto center... yeah they were jerking you around. id have used a breaker bar to bust the over-tight lugnuts loose. bryan heres the deal. never use an air wrench to tighten lug nuts on any vehicle. they need to be tightened with a torque wrench. it is clearly stated in every owners book. consider you having a flat tire and some nuckle head used an air wrench to 200+ flbs some weeks ago and you must remove the tire with the emergency wrench. that is just one scenario. there are many more that can create damage unecessary expense and safety concerns. if an emergency should occur and you do not have a torque wrench loosen and retighten the lugs at the first opportunity with a torque wrench. in the case of walmart his excuse would disappear instantly. steve heres a little story i got replacement tires for a 99 dakota from a walmart. real good price on the tires and i bought a lifetime spin balance/rotation option at the time of purchase. so every second or third oil change 6k to 9k miles i have done at walmart and get the tires rotated and balanced. one local w-mart tire/auto center has been coming up with creative reasons why they wont rotate the tires ... heres the latest one your lugs are too tight we think one is striped your truck was recently inspected they knew that from inspection sticker in window take it back to whoever inspected and tell them lugs too tight/striped. so i call and go directly to dealer who did inspection and service manager uses air tool to remove and reinstall every lug on both front wheels im with him on shop floor he says theres no problem. i say thanks and drive straight back to walmart to see the chuckleheads there. i tell the service mgr the story of trip to dealership and he says well the lugs may be too tight they have more powerful air guns that we do. repeats that statement a few times and i say i still want the tires rotated and balanced. so by now its dinnertime and theres a two-hour wait. he says do you want to wait or come back tomorrow i chose to come back later but this being the second consecutive time with an inventive excuse not to do the work the next day i go to a different walmart 15 miles away. all i get done is a tire rotation/balancing and theres no problems reported at all ... but i did watch very closely the guy removing the lugs on all four tires and noticed he had to spend more time that usual with the air wrench on each lug that roar of the air tool lasted a few more seconds than normal and once or twice i thought he was ready to give up on a lug. so is they have more powerful air guns that we do a bunch of nonsense or not .

how many people out there had early failure air conditioner evaporators leaks my 2001 318 ram 1500 2wd with 80k leaks already. calling shops including the dodge dealers they say they had a lot of leaking ones. why should it leak being barely 4 yrs old my 1978 lebaron doesnt leak! they tell me the screens in the cowl fresh air intake are too coarse and lets dirt settle on the core causing it to corrode. they say jeeps had a screen in it fine enough that worked in similiar years i curiously looked at my beat up t-bird and their screen looks like 320 mesh! who had similiar problems and what did you find if you replaced one yourself was it corroded from dirt or is it fractured because of cheap materials/construction i doubt it getting a hold of dodge and seeing if they will do something about it is gonna work. did anybody seems i see quite of few rams with the windows down last couple days with temps in the mid 80s. coincidence seems like dodge knew of the problem . i feel sorry for anyone who paid almost $700 to replace it. i will do the job myself and be installing my own screen if i find it corroded from debri. what a pita..... any feedback greatly appreciate it.... frustrated .

i asked the owner manager about it and his reply was that his shop hasnt broken a wheel stud in 18 years and his repeat business is phenomenal as for extra cost he said that for him torque wrenches were cheap insurance against extra cost. stripping studs is very rare. i have yet to see one overtorqued to the point of it breaking... on the few ocassions of a stripped stud it takes a few minutes to re-thread them. and if its pretty bad it doesnt take long to put a new stud in. at the shops i worked at none of the experienced techs stripped or broke and studs. but i have seen a few new guys mess up stuck/frozen/rusted/overtorqued lug nuts. the techs dont even bother telling the superviser or owner about any stud damages as long as its been properly fixed. ive often helped the new guys on how to fix their screwups. missing lug nut keys are the easiest to remove i normally dont charge for this service. either break it off or use a tight fitting socket to impact it off. also break inspections were done while the tires are off. -a|ex yeah it is a little easier to do it then . . . . . personally in my years of experience ive never seen them done or did any brake inspections with the wheel on. i also did brakes and alignments if i see that it needs it i tell the customer. i also do front end shake downs while the car is on the lift tires still on to check suspension components. brake work is where i make the most $$. if you do one side ya gota do the other... on a good week its common to make over $1k. but on slow days its a fight to get the oil changes. btw this was my experience working at pep boys and speedy mufflers. ntb and other tire specialist shops normally have better techs. you dont want a master mechanic doing tires he will make more mistakes than a tech that only does tires. there are also idiot techs that dont check specs and replace parts just by looking at the vehicle mileage. managers normally dont check up on the techs thats the shop supervisors job. but he too is too busy dealing with court appearances to check up on the techs. -a|ex .

no tom. what you dont comprehend is that i had never heard of any deaths from the gas tanks and stated so therefore no error on my part no error to admit to. got it tommy-troll-boy john gave verifiable evidence which you grabbed onto like a drowning man to try and prove i was wrong showing to all that you will not provide evidence for yourself but will cling to the coattails of someone that does. which further demonstrates your unworthiness to be respected by anyone. tell me why those 1800 that died over a 14 year period upset you more than all the drunken driver caused deaths over the same period. a far greater number iirc. budd what facts tom jerry said there were deaths without giving any evidence and ive never heard of any deaths from the saddle tanks wtf does jerry have to do with this even at that why should he have to repeat what was already given by john its simple simpleton jerry didnt post any supportive evidence. a point i merely pointed out. i have no quarrels with john as hes posted good info in the group many times. that still doesnt back you up. jerry simply agreed with the evidence already posted and didnt need to add more to it and his opinion is irrelevant to my question to you anyway. your feelings for john are also irrelevant to my question so why are you brining it up either is this just another lame attempt to spin your way out of admitting to error buddy boy . . .one statement made without support and one statement from personal experience. i guess that once again you have forgotten how to read. allow me to copy just the 2nd to the last paragraph form the link that john posted for you. data updated through 1999 from nhtsas fatality analysis reporting system fars show that over 1800 people have been killed in fire crashes in the u.s. in 1973-87 gm c/k pickups and cab-chassis trucks with the defective outside-the-frame-rail sidesaddle fuel tank design. just since dots deadly deal with gm to drop its recall efforts in december 1994 over 330 people have died in c/k pickup fire crashes. the side saddle pickup design continues to claim more lives in 2001 than any other single defect. ok . . . .so so how is this not that dangerous now you can whine and cry all that you want to but the facts are the facts. agreed and would you even bothered to look up facts at all if john hadnt given you the link lazybones lol yet more spin. how do you know what i would and would not have looked up either way im still asking the question. what is your definition of not that dangerous i dont think so. it would have been completely opposite your past performances. my past performance as distorted by you has nothing to do with the question at hand now answer it or go away. now if you can prove that even 1/2 of these fires would have happened if the tanks were mounted in a safer location then you have an argumnet otherwise you are once again full of shit. i never said they were not dangerous i said they were not as dangerous as cbs wanted you to believe. big difference tommy-troll-boy. really then why did you say in a previous post that you were unaware of anyone dying due to saddle mounted tanks your exact words jerry said there were deaths without giving any evidence and ive never heard of any deaths from the saddle tanks hell you also claimed not to know about any explosions except for the one created for tv. yea accuracy is a big thing for you budd isnt it. btw as ramdork pointed out it was nbc that aired it not cbs so once again your are wrong mr. accuracy. now who is the one too lazy to look anything up leaked internal memos from gm also clearly stated that the engineers thought it was a bad idea to place these tanks like this but high level execs listened to marketing claims about advertizing large fuel capacity and overrode this for more $$$$ in their pockets. once again corporate execs thinking about nothing more than money and idiots like you buying itno it. so ill ask again with well over 1800 people dead what is your definition of not that dangerous 1800 over what time period 14 years. probably more like 24 but what difference does that make if you average overall automotive deaths at 45 k / yr and divide 128 / year average deaths caused by the fuel tanks then you get a figure of 3%. just 3% of all those deaths were caused by those fuel tanks. lol what an idiot. talk about fuzzy math. what foundation are you basing this crap on the death toll has not held at a steady number through the years and neither has the number of people killed by fiery crashes. then lets not forget about your idiotic comaprison of all deaths in all vehicles to a particular type in a specific vehicle lol. your math makes no sense so much for accuracy once again. even with your numbers as full of shit as they are if onl

jerry wrote trust me you cant break anything up but you are right. it was nbc that was involved in the saddle tank fiasco but it is hard to keep them straight sometimes. take the cbs 60 minutes segment in which a trucks wheel rims were filed down again viewers were in the dark to make the phony case that they were prone to explode while the tires were being filled with air. and then the one which implied a jeep was prone to flip over during fairly gentle turns. guess what heavy weights had been hidden in the jeeps wheel wells to make it more likely to flip. cbs nbc ................ seem joined at the hips to me. isuzu suzuki both settled their suits against consumer reports for their reporting the trooper and samurai flipping easily in turns. i believe cu did admit the tests conducted on these two vehicles were not applied to other vehicles used for comparison nor did they represent real world driving conditions. cu was accused of taking money from trial lawyers to produce negative test results. they settled with both sides dropping their arguments. .

heres the deal. never use an air wrench to tighten lug nuts on any vehicle. they need to be tightened with a torque wrench. it is clearly stated in every owners book. consider you having a flat tire and some nuckle head used an air wrench to 200+ flbs some weeks ago and you must remove the tire with the emergency wrench. that is just one scenario. there are many more that can create damage unecessary expense and safety concerns. if an emergency should occur and you do not have a torque wrench loosen and retighten the lugs at the first opportunity with a torque wrench. in the case of walmart his excuse would disappear instantly. steve i use a snap-on air impact with the appropriate snap-on torq bar socket for the lugnuts. twas very expensive at the time flat rate pay requires speed and accuracy. but you are correct. at home i use a torque wrench. -a|ex .

in fact wal-mart has been commanded to turn down the pressure regulators by senior management effectively reducing the torque available on the spin guns. this was done because wm has had to pay a number of claims over the last couple of years for wheel damage and lug damage. the proper way to put on the lug nuts is to start the nut on the lug by hand and then snug it down with the spin gun. many of walmarts grease monkeys were putting the nut in the socket and then spin-starting it with the air gun. if it threaded up properly fine but if it cross-threaded as occasionally was the case the additional air pressure allowed them to go ahead and force the nut on and gald the threads. with the pressure regulator turned down the spin gun no longer has enough torque and in fact can barely even snug the lug bolts down. proper final tightening is supposed to be done manually with a torque wrench set to i think 105 ft lbs. in fact this manually with a torque wrench is how ntb does it. any employee caught not using the torque wrench at ntb gets fired. of course this does present a problem for an underpowered spin gun trying to remove the lug nuts but irregardless you were lied to. if they have to be manually torqued then its reasonable that they might have to be manually broken loose. this is also why i will not use a tire shop who will not let me into the pit area to observe the job.... and i ask up front while were doing the paperwork. i dont want a botched job anymore than the store owner does. writes heres a little story i got replacement tires for a 99 dakota from a walmart. real good price on the tires and i bought a lifetime spin balance/rotation option at the time of purchase. so every second or third oil change 6k to 9k miles i have done at walmart and get the tires rotated and balanced. one local w-mart tire/auto center has been coming up with creative reasons why they wont rotate the tires ... heres the latest one your lugs are too tight we think one is striped your truck was recently inspected they knew that from inspection sticker in window take it back to whoever inspected and tell them lugs too tight/striped. so i call and go directly to dealer who did inspection and service manager uses air tool to remove and reinstall every lug on both front wheels im with him on shop floor he says theres no problem. i say thanks and drive straight back to walmart to see the chuckleheads there. i tell the service mgr the story of trip to dealership and he says well the lugs may be too tight they have more powerful air guns that we do. repeats that statement a few times and i say i still want the tires rotated and balanced. so by now its dinnertime and theres a two-hour wait. he says do you want to wait or come back tomorrow i chose to come back later but this being the second consecutive time with an inventive excuse not to do the work the next day i go to a different walmart 15 miles away. all i get done is a tire rotation/balancing and theres no problems reported at all ... but i did watch very closely the guy removing the lugs on all four tires and noticed he had to spend more time that usual with the air wrench on each lug that roar of the air tool lasted a few more seconds than normal and once or twice i thought he was ready to give up on a lug. so is they have more powerful air guns that we do a bunch of nonsense or not .

did you have the alignment on your lights checked you didnt put some of those retarded blue glow bulbs in there did you -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving had the alignment checked twice even went so far as to measure the body to insure that its not got the ass end lower than it should be so that the angle of the beam would be aimed higher in the front.....its dead on and if you get into another van similar parked side by side the aims about identical...so its not that. believe me i thought about that early on...that 2500 just has some damn bright ass beams.. and no...i didnt put in those fucked up blue lights. those damn things need to be illegal. sylvania makes a new bulb called the silverstar...i thought it was a blue bulb and its not..now thats one bright damn bulb right there. i put them in the wifes car and wow what a difference. but no...factory bulbs in both the town and country and the b van.. steve@carolinabreezehvac steve@removethis.carolinabreezehvac.com wrote almost wish i had that problem...the t+c and the new 03 2500 both get bright beamed about every 3rd car at night....its really funny when you flash em back and they realize that was low beam.... i have this sick visual of some guy with glasses getting holes burned through the back of his headrest... just about everyone experienced it with many dc models around that time. my 97 ram also has that problem and unless you want to do some serious customization there is really little that you can do about it. perhaps the aftermarket has a solution but im unaware of anything. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving ive had issues with the headlights on my 1994 dodge caravan grand le ever since i bought my vehicle brand new. very poor visibility at night. the lights have been checked for aligment & ive tried different bulbs each claiming to be better then original still the problem continues. the dealers tell me that there is nothing that can be done as chrysler had poor light that year. has anyone experienced this type of problem and found a solution .

what facts tom jerry said there were deaths without giving any evidence and ive never heard of any deaths from the saddle tanks wtf does jerry have to do with this even at that why should he have to repeat what was already given by john its simple simpleton jerry didnt post any supportive evidence. a point i merely pointed out. i have no quarrels with john as hes posted good info in the group many times. . . .one statement made without support and one statement from personal experience. i guess that once again you have forgotten how to read. allow me to copy just the 2nd to the last paragraph form the link that john posted for you. data updated through 1999 from nhtsas fatality analysis reporting system fars show that over 1800 people have been killed in fire crashes in the u.s. in 1973-87 gm c/k pickups and cab-chassis trucks with the defective outside-the-frame-rail sidesaddle fuel tank design. just since dots deadly deal with gm to drop its recall efforts in december 1994 over 330 people have died in c/k pickup fire crashes. the side saddle pickup design continues to claim more lives in 2001 than any other single defect. ok . . . .so now you can whine and cry all that you want to but the facts are the facts. agreed and would you even bothered to look up facts at all if john hadnt given you the link lazybones i dont think so. it would have been completely opposite your past performances. now if you can prove that even 1/2 of these fires would have happened if the tanks were mounted in a safer location then you have an argumnet otherwise you are once again full of shit. i never said they were not dangerous i said they were not as dangerous as cbs wanted you to believe. big difference tommy-troll-boy. leaked internal memos from gm also clearly stated that the engineers thought it was a bad idea to place these tanks like this but high level execs listened to marketing claims about advertizing large fuel capacity and overrode this for more $$$$ in their pockets. once again corporate execs thinking about nothing more than money and idiots like you buying itno it. so ill ask again with well over 1800 people dead what is your definition of not that dangerous 1800 over what time period 14 years. if you average overall automotive deaths at 45 k / yr and divide 128 / year average deaths caused by the fuel tanks then you get a figure of 3%. just 3% of all those deaths were caused by those fuel tanks. what about the other 97% of highway deaths drunk driving for example causes many more deaths per year than those fuel tanks ever did but i dont hear you whining about that . . . or do you drive drunk no you shouldnt say anymore as it just digs your hole deeper. sorry coward but this time the only one digging in is you. youre not worthy enough to call namwes tom. budd .
