If you could replace your Cummins 5.9 engine with another diesel...what would it be?

Q: this link http//www.fordmuscle.com/archives/2000/01/airfilters/index.shtml takes you to a ford site where all the major brands of automotive air filters are tested empirically for filtration and flow. included at the site is a chart that tells how big a filter a given engine displacement needs for a maximum rpm. i am not responsible for the content of the site so dont complain to me if it tells you something you dont want to hear. -- budd pres. bush john kerry has changed his position on the iraq war so many times he could debate himself. b.c. and lose. very interesting reading. im glad you posted the link. i didnt see the chart for sizing the filter to the engine. how many cfm filter would the typical stock 5.9l engine require thanks denny #2 the formula for four stroke engine cfm is cid x rpm x ve* / 3456 *ve = volumetric efficiency 100% efficient = 1 no engine is 100% efficient however. therefore... 360 x 5500 x 1 / 3456 = 573cfm that assumes 100% efficiency which aint gonna happen mike it would if you put a blower on it....... g thanks for the formula.. #2 .

there is but youd have to nuke dc from orbit or americans need to start holding congress responsible instead of re-electing them automatically like strom thurman. tell candidates and parties right up front what their platform will be and quit being voting puppets. no one knows better than you what you need not congress not the parties not anyone . . except maybe god. government cannot possibly run your life raise your kids or supply what you need as well as you can because you are there 100% of the time they arent. -- budd ive thought about ways to reform it and there is no way. the politicians are the ones who would have to make new rules and they wont do it for fear of losing their jobs. the incumbents are the ones to get the most money because they know how to manipulate the system. for them to vote for reform they would have to hang themselves and they are not going to do that. there is no answer! dddd i agree far too much money is involved in the election process. any suggestions on how to get candidates to bite the hands that feed them -- budd pres. bush john kerry has changed his position on the iraq war so many times he could debate himself. b.c. and lose. the problem is that the only way to get elected or even nominated is money. its unbelievable the amount of money spent on campaigns now-a-days. all of that money is provided by special interest groups who expect and get something for their money. it is bribery regardless of what you want to callit. the politicians know that they have to cater to those with the money and the real needs of the country are secondary. i dont see a solution so it will only get worse. dddd what weve got for government is the result of complacency among voters. too many have thought for too long their vote doesnt count but it does. i glad to see the drives to get more voters off their butts and into the booths i just hope that political lowlifes are using them to force voters for selected candidates. -- budd im sorta curious do any of you folks that participate in the various political threads actually believe that you will sway anybodies vote it would seem to me that if one was so enthralled with their candidate that their time would be better spent supporting that candidate through phone banks leafleting and other campaign work. i just dont understand how going back and forth with the same 2 or 3 people are advancing your candidates election bid. roy i dont know what those guys are doing except taking out their frustrations. but i do know which one stirred the pot and lit the fire with his kerry kicked ass thread. it was pretty quiet until he pulled that stunt. i blame him for turning this into another pointless polictical group. 16 days until we start the election was stolen crap i cant wait - ive no problem with the threads at all i just dont see it as helping either of the two idiots. this will end in a couple of weeks anyway. with regards to who started it ya gotta figure that if ya dont have a clue about trucks babble about something else it does break up the monotony though. roy agreed. i dont think the level of discourse in here isnt much different from what were seeing on the campaign trail pretty petty. while i disagree with your choice of candidate i havent been less enthused about mine since 1976 who was that anyway oh yeah ford and thats pretty low ill tell ya...i can barely stand to listen to either of them. we have an idiot running against a moron. you put which label on which candidate. i honestly cant vote for either. politics in this country has sunk to new lows in the past several elections. all idiots!!!!!!!!!!!! dddd .

you just migt have a blown intake plenuim gasket and its sucking oil from the lifter valley a pinging assocated with this can confirm its taking place matt whiting wrote bob wrote bob wrote on thu 7 oct 2004 john kunkel wrote the engine speed is not connected with the oil consumption. if your engine consumed or lost 4 quarts of oil in 800 miles you either have a whipped engine or a large leak. disagree many vans had ridiculously low axle ratios and the absence of od would have the motor running at 3500+ rpms at freeway speeds. a tired motor will suck more oil at 3500 than it will at 1800. ...and a non-tired engine will use no more oil at 3500 than at 1800. but it will get tired at least twice as fast not necessarily. matt if everything else is equal it certainly well. everything else isnt even close to equal. it is pretty well documented that most wear occurs during startup especially when the engine is cold. running at twice the rpm doesnt yield even close to twice the rate of wear. the difference in fact may be virtually negligible. cars that are run long periods at a time and not started all that often especially cold starts tend to have engines that last a lot longer. matt .

just bought an 87 dodge pickup. whenever i drive it and its hot outside after i shut it off the truck seems to get vapor lock and refuses to start again. so i popped the hood... and what seems to be happening is the choke closes all the way whenever the engine is shut off.... which makes it darn near impossible to start. my solution is to jam the choke open with a screwdriver until it starts. also im only getting 7 miles to the gallon litterally although the truck seems to run fine. im goin to rebuild the carb but how do i know if the electric choke ever functions correctly i mean how do i test *that* or is it totally screwed up and i should save time by installing a manual choke follow the instructions to the letter on the q-jet rebuild but if your mileage stays that bad after everything is fixed then someone has played around with the air door settings. this is a good carb really but many have been given un-needed adjustments. the electric choke is regulated by a resistor on the manifold and there should be 12 volts available to the choke when cold. if you have the voltage available then the problem is in the choke thermostat. i replaced the one on my 79 with a regular thermostat from about 1968 - 1972 model years. however if you have to have all emissions equipment installed this may not be an option. the trucks an 87 dodge ram 360 engine. the qjets numbers are 17085431 / 1746. from what im reading that may not be the carb that came with the truck. im not a newbie but havent worked on my own cars for about twenty years and the carb thing is a new one for me. relax. its not rocket science just follow the instructions. if you suspect its not the right carb then i suggest you replace it. trying to sort out carb troubles for someone just learning will only add to your frustration. any advice greatly appreciated... and if youre in oregon it might be worth some beer. utah but i dont drink. hoist a cold pepsi for me instead. bg budd .

91/4 rear end looking to replace bearings any info 98 1500 4x4 5.9l for the axle bearings you need a slide hammer to remove the old bearings. a bearing installer is preferred to put the new ones in but a socket will work. it helps to have a caliper with a depth gauge on it because you want to seat the bearings .600 in from the end of the axle tube. of course to do this necessitates pulling the axles which requires opening up the differential and removing the c-clips. the axle seals will have to come out and new seals installed after the bearings are replaced. if you mean the main bearings or the pinion bearings in the differential then my advice would be to take it to a shop - this is one of those jobs that if you have to ask how to do it you mostly likely cant do it yourself. .

yes but it takes a specific amount of fuel/energy to over come frictional forces/losses working inside the motor. those frictional forces are less in a smaller motor. to a point. in return for a smaller engine you may have to turn more rpm due to different gearing to accomodate the same load capacity. what this comes down to again is that some one this time its you has decided that secondguessing the engineers on the project design of the dodge ram and selection of the cummins because you think you can do better. great. when youve finished your several years of r&d i may actually find merit to your claims. if you take two engines that produce the same amount of torque/hp at a given rpm where you might typically cruise at say 1600 yet one is 3.8 liters and the other is 5.9....the 3.8 will afford you better economy hands down. do you disagree yes i disagree. you have totally cast aside factors of vibration the four will vibrate more and individual part strength con rods in the four would have to be larger than those in the six to accomodate the same load factors over the same durability rating. add in the fact that a six fires 3 times per revolution rather than two which counters the parasitic loss inherent in changing direction of a moving mass such as a piston. ill state this as plainly as i can since we all know its been stated numerous times before the inline six cylinder engine configuration is the most efficient design that uses a reciprocating piston and internal combustion. again quite plainly if your ideas held practical application rather than theory why is it that 95% a guess but its close of otr trucks use an inline six cylinder instead of a four the savings might be marginal but savings are to be had. you dont get something for nothing. pretty soon you might have a truck getting 25mpg or better. i suggest that i could have that this afternoon if my foot werent so heavy. would be dreamy to get 30mpg out of a full size truck no yes. dreamy. your dreamy. perhaps youd have better luck by putting a superbird style nose cone on your truck. with that deutz you could cruise the screw @ 1400rpm too. hardly. with the present gearing you would have to turn the same rpm as the cummins. lots of hassle but were dreaming here right no you are dreaming here. the rest of us with the cummins engine like it. diesel four bangers are found in numberous automobiles. why would the less than perfect balance affect me to the point of being turned off...i love diesels. they may have balance shafts in their design as did many gasoline fours. max life liberty and the pursuit of any jackass that threatens it. embellished usnavy slogan .

stuart wrote what you fail to see is this diesel engines will burn only the amount of fuel needed to get the job done. you wont be as efficient as you think once the engine is installed in the same truck as the cummins is. yes but it takes a specific amount of fuel/energy to over come frictional forces/losses working inside the motor. those frictional forces are less in a smaller motor. if you take two engines that produce the same amount of torque/hp at a given rpm where you might typically cruise at say 1600 yet one is 3.8 liters and the other is 5.9....the 3.8 will afford you better economy hands down. do you disagree does this diesel have the same flat power curve as the cummins six i suspect a 3.8 liter four cylinder could produce the same amount of power at a specific rpm but the torque and hp curve would have a more dramatic peak at that rating. a diesel with a pronounced power peak would be fine for use as a marine engine or a generator but not very practical in a real world truck. boats and generators dont need to make much power above or below the target operating rpm. they dont have to deal with traffic towing loads up hills. .

im trying to figure who exactly would have to die before kerry would figure terrorists are no longer a nuisance . . . his wife or his dog -- budd pres. bush john kerry has changed his position on the iraq war so many times he could debate himself. b.c. and lose. craig christian wrote very few companies get away with the kind of price goudging that oil companies do. they get away with it because of the $$ they contribute to the law makers and probably to judges as well. all in my opinion of course. ahh you want more government regulation rather than supply/demand economics for the oil industry in the usa. common misconception that it will help anything. even hinting that bush has a better environmental stand is absolutlely rediculous and his record proves it. if you cant admit that then you are very blinded by the right wing. the public does drive policy in this area ... by electing a leader that will push it! define better bush is more realistic meaning facing reality when it comes to energy/enviromental trade off issues. now how will kerry push it give billions to private industry to fund alternative fuel research wheres that money going to come from if the money wont come from the publics own demand for it then its gotta come from us tax payers and that is not being realistic. kerry talks and the left bites without facing the realities of it. ill be cancelling your vote on 11/2 and i will have a clear conscience that i have made the best decision for myself and my country. will your conscience be clear when you vote for someone that is going to continue kicking ass as he sees fit and alienating us from the world the time for the decades old policy of waiting for disaster and tragedy to hit our shores and then and only then go after someone in a policing action is over. the left wont face the reality of just what terrorism is all about. kerry last week made the statement to the effect that its time to get back to where terrorism was just a nusance similar to prostitution and illegal gambling. this statement of his scares the heck out of me. it is clear that kerry just doesnt understand the dangers of the policies of decades gone by where we treated terrorism as just a nusance to deal with. that time is now over and my conscience will be clear by voting for someone that wont put us back to the days of treating terrorism as simply a nusance like prositution and illegal gambling. what a stupid statement kerry made. as for alienating us from the world what part of the world do you refer russia perhaps they learned recently the hard way. they subscribed to your methods of gaining global support. they got other countries to sign on with them but with one serious condition. resistance fighters cant be labled as terrorists. then russia lost 100s of kids to resistance fighters. now russia will do an about face on the global support issue and will fight any way they have to. that is facing the reality of it all something the left here just hasnt learned yet. someone that will be no closer to a solution on alternative energy or the war on terror in 4 more years frankly i hope he puts a pipeline in your state .. well see how much you like him after that. we have a pipeline in our state. it ruptured a few months ago. we need a new one built asap. so your point is libya has changed for the better afghanistan now has people voting for the first time in history iraq will vote later this year. it might not be perfect but it is closer to a solution. if kerry had his way saddam would still be in power and have control over kuwait kerry voted against the gulf war. we would not have the b2 bomber or much of any new military hardware kerry voted against almost all of it. no way would i call that closer to a solution. .

on second thought hands down my vote would be for a deutz bf4m2013c displacing 3.8 liters and producing 168hp and 457 pounds of torque. it would be until you felt it shake the truck. another inline six advantage is the inherent balance. the hp rating of this deutz is for an rpm of 2500 where as the cummins 5.9 12v might be a little higher. not to mention i dont have an excuse to rev past 2500 rpm. again the knowledge of how a diesel makes power is lacking. while it might be peaked on the hp side its torque you should be looking for. could you imagine the economical benefits of having less displacement what you fail to see is this diesel engines will burn only the amount of fuel needed to get the job done. you wont be as efficient as you think once the engine is installed in the same truck as the cummins is. max life liberty and the pursuit of any jackass that threatens it. embellished usnavy slogan .

im not high on four valves but deutz makes the best of it. which shows exactly the amount of experience you have in engine design. four valves per cylinder does the following 1. allows for more intake cross-sectional area for higher flow and better use of valve open duration. 2. allows for use of smaller valves which cool faster thus lowering wear on seat and face. 3. allows for the use of a smaller bore while getting the larger cross sectional area. 4. cuts down on valve shrouding effect. max all of your arguments are self evident and in many practical applications proved wonderful but my arguement would be how was the 24-valve design an improvement over the 12-valve design of my current engine where my desires/wants are met of course most will come back with a number of responses of great merit. i would eventually concede that those horsepower/torque loving individuals would be happier with the better breathing design of the 24-v. then to save face time and money i will state for the record i do not need more horsepower/torque than what my 12-valve supplies. with diesel $2.00 a gallon i want economy. my truck gets 23mpg. i would hope that this feat could be surpassed with a deutz or other design. from what ive read and heard the 24v doesnt approach this economy. maybe i should have begun the thread with the heading what motor would you replace your cummins 5.9 with to improve economy while not loosing any performance that would be a great thread no funny how many manufactures make four cylinder engines producing mucho torque 500 foot pounds with much less displacement than the cummins. deutz makes a one that produces i think 180hp and 540 ft.lbs. with a fuel consumption rate of 198 g/kwh! displacement is like 3.8 liters!!! hmmm...that raises my eyebrows. wish i could experience first hand what it would feel like behind the steering wheel of a dodge half ton with that motor...wouldnt you stuart stuart .

just bought an 87 dodge pickup. whenever i drive it and its hot outside after i shut it off the truck seems to get vapor lock and refuses to start again. so i popped the hood... and what seems to be happening is the choke closes all the way whenever the engine is shut off.... which makes it darn near impossible to start. my solution is to jam the choke open with a screwdriver until it starts. also im only getting 7 miles to the gallon litterally although the truck seems to run fine. its not unusual for a choke to close some after shutdown tightly closed doesnt sound right but i would still expect the engine to start. there is a vacuum pot that is supposed to pull the choke open after start. q-jets are notorious for leaking fuel from plugs in the bottom of the fuel bowl the fuel runs into the manifold after shutdown and floods the engine this could be the source of the hot start problem and the lousy mileage. the plugs are located in the bottom of the main body above the baseplate. the accepted procedure is to seal the plugs with a coat of epoxy. .

bond market rofl. interest rates plummeted in the 90s. you do know that interest rates are tied to long term bonds dont you as a matter if fact i do. do you have any idea what clinton did with the bond market i didnt think so. you state that i need to look up information ... perhaps taking a bit of your own advice would help here. still invest in high-tech stocks ... the same ones i invested in int he 90s. great whats your point the point i was trying to make is that i still invest and so does everyone else yet we see declines up until recently in our investments. can you explain that where are the investment dollars going my spending habits havent changed and i think that is probably the case with most americans that still have jobs. one problem is that there is a major trade deficit last i looked. we are not exporting like we use to. the bush administration is plummeting the country into record debt. thats what bottoms out the economy. who suffers when the government cant pay its bills yep you got it american companies. when they dont get paid they have less money to invest in r&d and personnel causing a chain reaction all the way down to the middle class. its a bi-product of trickle down economics. we have reagan to thank for that. that doesnt change the fact that in the 90s the market was fueled heavily by trillions invested in high risk stocks that failed. many companies were heavily invested in and never produced a product. true but a lot did produce and continue to produce. thats what the stock market is. so what is your point people saw gold and were suckered in. you or your broker werent one of those...great but doesnt change what happened. to not realize just where the money came from is economic ignorance. i know where it came from. it is still coming from those places. market correction is the nature of the beast. republican economics do not help a failing economy. take your own finances as an example ... when business is slow and you arent making as much do you get all of your credit cards and have a spending spree hell no. that simply makes it worse. fiscal responsibility is the only way to insure a healthy *lasting* economy. bush has not been fiscally responsible. you talk about my supposed lefty way of thinking ... bush is a spending mo-fo. we cannot prosper under his plan. i dont remember who said it but this sums up republican economics republican economics is like me or you deciding that at some point in the future we are going to win the lottery ... so we go ahead and start budgeting and spending now. does it make sense to spend money you dont have the economy is growing rapidly. unemployment is lower now than the average of clintons so called great years. well now that depends on what you call employment. many of my friends that use to write software before their jobs went to india now deliver pizza. riiighhhttt ... great economy miles. statiscally at some point during clintons years i suspect you are talking about the first couple of years there was more unemployment. but the jobs were better and higher paying which fueled the kick ass economy we saw on the mid to late 90s under democratic economic leadership ... not republican. consumer spending is up as well. sure it is everyone is following bushs example ... buy now pay later. im doing much better now so is my company family and friends. you comprise a very small percentage. i am not doing better and i know very few people that are. the 90s sucked and clinton/gore ignored the economists who predicted the market collapse. when the economy was falling in 2000 gore still campaigned saying how great things were looking...opposite of economists predictions. have you ever met a wealthy economist neither have i. what does that tell you read the labor reports. they are publicly available. unemployment is now lower than the average of the clinton years. go on go read it if you want to learn the truth of your propaganda based thinking. i better hurry i have to go deliver a pizza ... labor reports dont mean a damn thing and you know it. earnings are down among the middle class. high paying jobs are down. the indians are doing great. that is the reality of this president republican economics and our piss poor foreign policy. in bush sr.s last year in office the economy grew at 2%. jobs were down when bush sr was in office. that is an economic indicator i look at. the country was in debt before he took office and it was worse when he left. the is an economic indicator i look at. bush srs so-called recession recovery was what economists call upside-down. under bush sr. business profits soared and umemployment and wages lagged. that is the fact. his recovery plan was not sustainable because of the debt. sounds like bab
