brantbarney@hotmail.com writes i have a 2001 dodge dakota with a 3.9 v6 and 58000 miles. recently when stopped at a stop light the oil pressure needle drops to the bottom. it happens consistently. in fact anytime the engine is at full operating temperature and the engine is idling the oil pressure drops to 0. 58000 is extremely early for a major overhaul. is the exhaust clear cheap things to check or do rammans shadetree ideas 1 drain your oil & check for the presence of gasoline as someone else suggested 2 if gas is in the oil pull all the plugs and run a compression check minimum labor chg shouldnt be over 1 hr labor 3 if compression check is bad pony up the bucks for an ohaul 4 if no gas in the oil pull the pan & replace the oil pump kneejerk guess most likely problem is #4 but beekeeps suggestion of 20w50 oil may work just as well. if 20w50 oil solves or improves it might be good time to consider trade. right now is absolutely the best time of the year to make your best deal. every dealer is really anxious to turn their inventory. your mileage is also low enough that you might want to consider a lease. .

i went ahead and replaced the carrier bearings and cups also. everything torqued down ok with the new cups in place and the rear end is now smooth and quiet. .

great info tom. i appreciate it very much. tom lawrence wrote charged $50 to check for codes and reset the light. can i just disconnect the battery yes. also any suggestions for a scan tool since the miles are adding up on this car and will probably be needing one sooner or later you should be able to display the codes on your odometer. click the ignition three times off-on-off-on-off-on and any stored codes pxxxx will display on the odometer. when finished the odometer will display pdone. you can then look the codes up online do a google search for obd-ii codes. if you want to buy one pretty much any generic obd-ii code reader will do the same and will also let you reset the cel without having to disconnect the battery. heres a pretty cheap one http//www.harborfreight.com/cpi/taf/manuals.taff=form&itemid=46030 .
