Q: i just bought a 1996 ram 3500 cummins. truck has just over 100000. the original window sticker says the truck has the hd 4speed option but the sticker on the hood says std so not sure about that. the truck goes in forward and reverse smooth and shifts smooth. the problem i noticed is that right around 55 to 60mph which also happens to be regulated commercial truck speed the truck seems to hunt or slip in and out of what i think is od with about a 300rpm change. i turned od off to see if it would stop in it drops about 700rpm but is steady but if you continue to slow down to say 30 or 40mph with the od off it hunts and slips the same so that is why i dont know if its actually od or not. but like i said at around 55 60mph with od on it feels like the od is slipping in and out. any speed above that it doesnt seem to have a problem. i checked the fluid level which was good but fluid smelt little burnt so i changed it. that leads into a whole world that i have never experienced. i have always had fords and this is my first dodge so i dont know anything about the fluids. the dipstick says atf 3 or dexron ii. everybody i talk to says never to use dexron. the manual says atf 3 for 2000 and older and 4 for newer. so i went to napa and they told me to use the valvoline atf 4. right on the bottle it says it replaces atf 3 so thats what i bought and a filter. so i really dont know if that is the right fluid or not. some websites say that atf 4 in older trans causes seal leaks but is better fluid. i changed the filter and fluid most fluid just pulled pan and did the recommended band adjustment which was quite interesting. they put that nice square adjuster on there so i had to make a tool to fit so i could use my torque wrench. i followed the service manual and did the 72 inch pounds then back off 2 7/8 turns for forward and 2 turns for reverse. so checked level and took truck for drive and it did the exact same thing no change. im sure my next step will have to be take to a shop but was wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone. it would be nice that by some slim chance it was something simple to fix but i know with most trans problems there usually not. thanks for your time. .

denny wrote i seen a cold air intake on ebay by chromeintakes at a good price. has anyone had any experience with this system and is it really worth the time and money to install a cold air intake depends on what you are expecting. if you want it to look good when you open the hood and to make a little more noise when the accelerator is pressed go for it. look at where your factory airbox is pulling air from....you already have a cold air intake. denny so i guess it is your opinion that an after market cold air intake isnt worth it. i do realize that the factory air box is designed to bring in cold air but the flow from the inlet of the box to the throttle body leaves something to be desired. if you was going to operate your motor at or near wide-open-throttle most of the time id agree that the increase in airflow may help. street driven vehicals rarely see half throttle most of the time so the slight increase in airflow will never be used. the reason that i was considering this was to be able to operate more efficiently. i really dont care about the look and sound. i really dont think this air filter/box/tubing is going to make any difference in your truck. denny .

merry christmas to all from an old fart that doesnt log in much any more. have a safe holiday everybody. denny merry christmas to you too and everyone else. maybe you would find more time to log in if you wernt spending it with da machine. havent seen the machine since ole red and mac were fueding over it. but i did hear a rumor that dale snuck down and nabbed it one night. we dont hear much from him anymore either.. bg wait a damn minute! ill admit to have had a few meds this week but that was a few days ago. but my wide assed buddy dont for a second think your going to run that line of bs. now if you folks remember back about a year ago there was a time when mac was heading to the northwest to visit his son. he was going to haul the machine up to red. ya with me here anyway as soon as that report got out there was a additional report of a floppy eared pudgy guy in a pink rabbit suit heading west in a dodge truck with a plow up front and carrots in the bed mumbling about im going to get it theyll never stop me. as mac told the story he parked for the night the next morning the machine was gone. next we heard of that same pink rabbit suit wearing guy in the plow truck was headed back east with no longer carrots in the back but with this large box. now does anybody want to guess what was in the box since that time he has turned his home into a armed camp. ars a 50 blow up dolls you name he has it. hell it has been reported here that his daughter is a better shot than he is. also note that he hasnt posted much recently. probably too weak to type with all the sessions with the machine. my uncle used to always say that the more a person talks the more hes trying to hide/cover up something. im thinking it took ole roy a bunch of time to peck all that out one handed. the perverts in here are probably wondering what that other hand has been doing. i gotta ask not that ill get any straight answer out of you does the machine really need lubed before every usage hmmmm..... two replies to one post first one was rather late last night second one was this am when i was awake. i get a little more creative after a little pillow time... g i think that maybe the rabbit might want to fess up. now he wants to know if the machine has to be lubed. since all i have is hearsay to go by i have to ask questions.. what did you do wear it out not me ya have to have it to wear it out.. probably thought it would run on carrot juice!g after you red mac and dale--even possibly others that i have no knowledge of--have had quality time with it im surprized it even works at all.. but i guess it didnt have to work too hard for you guys.. vbg denny .

id check out michelin ltx m/s. an excellent all around tire and these are what i use when i plow snow. there are times that i wish i had a dedicated snow tire and do plan ongetting a set to use only for plowing since i too run into ice a lot. for that i plan on getting blizzak w965 tires. -- ------------------------------------------ laszlo almasi ----cool toys formerly carolina watercraft works ----mack daddy trailers ----ice angels i need a tire recommendation. two winters ago i was tooling around amarillo in a dodge dakota with bridgestone dueler a/ts. they had no problems handling the conditions i routinely faced there. last winter i had just bought a cummins 2500 4x4 ram and was immediately called up out of the reserves to go to iraq. now im back and discovered this winter that the current set of factory tires wil be inadequate for the conditions i face there this year. first hint of ice and the truck turns into an ice skate. i understand this happens to any vehicle on ice but some tires offer a little better grip then others. with that in mind id like to toss out my working conditions and see what some of you are using and recommending for winter conditions on your 2500/3500 rams. i am the manager at a wind power plant outside amarillo. in the winter we get lots of rain and our site roads are dirt/caliche which can get very soft. i also need to deal with snow and more importantly ice; because amarillo frequently gets ice storms. thanks. posted via usenet.com premium usenet group services ---------------------------------------------------------- ** speed ** retention ** completion ** anonymity ** ---------------------------------------------------------- http//www.usenet.com .
