High Mileage engine??

Q: i have a 1996 ram 1500 4x2 318 c.i. with 240000 miles on it and i blew a head gasket. while i am waiting for the machine shop to do a valve job etc. i would like to know if anyone has any reasonable suggestions as to anything else i could to prolong the life of the engine. i am replacing the oil pump and cleaning all the engine parts i can. anything else i am not rich but have a little extra money to spend on it. thanks david .
