Help with interior dome light please
From : wade
Q: hi all i have a 02 1500 ram 4 door truck. 81000 miles. when i open the drivers door the interior dome lights will not come on. this started about 6 weeks ago. at first i would open the door and the light would come on but go out after about 30 sec. now the lights do not come on at all when i open the door. the lights use to stay on the whole time i had the door open. i have replaced the drivers door latch $70 but that did not fix it. the interior dome lights come on with any of the other three doors open and with the remote. thanks in advance for all advice. wade .

really when did they start doing that and what would be the possible reason for it either way unless they also came up with some reason of controlling the lights through the pcm it still sounds like you are getting a bad connection. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving on sat 18 oct 2003 173110 -0400 tbone fatchance@noway.now wrote the pin switch in the door jam seems to be going bad. it may be jamming or getting a bad connection. sorry i dont think there is a pin switch. the switch is in the door latch. thanks wade .

i have replaced the drivers door latch $70 but that did not fix it. the interior dome lights come on with any of the other three doors open and with the remote. thanks in advance for all advice. yeah... gone are the good old days of a battery pin switch lamp and ground... okay- on that four-wire connector in the door latch pins 2&4 are ground black/light green and tan/pink. verify ground with a dom. pin 1 tan wire no tracer is the door ajar switch. on the switch side check for ground when the door is open. if you get no continuity with a good ground the switch is bad unlikely since you just replaced it. on the connector side ground pin #1 and see if the light comes on. again this will help verify if the problem is with the switch itself or further up the line. the tan wire goes directly up the the instrumen cluster connector #1 pin 18. remove the cluster remove the headlamp switch bezel first then remove the center bezel around the radio. both of these are held with spring clips. the center bezel has one screw above the grocery bag hook. remove the two screws from the top of the cluster bezel then remove the bezel one of the dumbest words ever dreamed up... ranks right up there with escutcheon. anyway once you get all that dismantled disconnect connecter #1 from the instrument cluster. again check for presence of ground at pin #18 the solid tan wire with the door open. this will identify if theres a break in the wire. if you have ground there then aside from a bad connection at the c1 connector somethings hosed with your instrument cluster. you could always try inserting a back probe into pin #18 re-connecting it to the cluster and applying ground to the back probe just to be sure. good luck .

on my 2001 truck if i have the instrument light control set to the dimmest position the dome light will not come on when the door is opened. you might want to move the ip light control to a brighter position. on sat 18 oct 2003 205259 gmt wade wwoodard@houston.rr.com wrote hi all i have a 02 1500 ram 4 door truck. 81000 miles. when i open the drivers door the interior dome lights will not come on. this started about 6 weeks ago. at first i would open the door and the light would come on but go out after about 30 sec. now the lights do not come on at all when i open the door. the lights use to stay on the whole time i had the door open. i have replaced the drivers door latch $70 but that did not fix it. the interior dome lights come on with any of the other three doors open and with the remote. thanks in advance for all advice. wade .

yes he could but not with the hemi and 5 speed or any version of a cummins as you suggested - and i agree with your hp assessment. i only wish that they still offered the hemi 5 speed with the old body style - -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving which engine hemi or cummins and you are talking a 2500 or bigger with these engines. yep. well he could be considering a 4.7l with a 5spd in a 1500. but.... naaaaahhhh!!! anything less than 300hp is just well... ordinary .

really when did they start doing that 2002 and what would be the possible reason for it somebody thought it was a good idea apparently. either way unless they also came up with some reason of controlling the lights through the pcm it still sounds like you are getting a bad connection. which is exactly what they came up with. the logic is all inside the instrument cluster. there are several switch sense inputs ground sensing on the cluster - one for each door. then there is a dome light driver output. when ground is sensed on any of the inputs battery voltage is switched to the output lighting up the cab. makes for easier and more integrated control of the whole lighting system - like when you use the keyless entry to unlock the doors the cluster itself handles the timer function on the output. when you get in the cluster handles the dimming of the lights possibly in laramie version only for that gee thats impressive feeling. i realized that the computer was probably involved after i posted it. i still see no valid reason for putting the switches in the latch mechanism unless they also intend to interface the vehicle security system into it as well like shutting down the alarm if the door is opened with the key but hell what do i know. do you know when they make this change -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

now why would i want to tell the man the wrong things about his truck. we have you for that. like your tire pressure response if i was like you i guess thats not a problem i found it incredibily funny that he knew more about his truck than you the expert his truck is newer than mine but it is still a bad connection possibly caused by a failed harness coming out of the door. i find it comical that you attack aguy for doing almost exactly what you did the post before and when called to the carpet on it just whimper and cry again. you know big slick i feel bad. i lied to you about the hydraulic clutch adjustment wrench. duh no shit shemp but with your demonstrated knowledge of hydraulics i wanted to see if you actually believed it yourself. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

i realized that the computer was probably involved after i posted it. i still see no valid reason for putting the switches in the latch mechanism unless they also intend to interface the vehicle security system into it as well like shutting down the alarm if the door is opened with the key but hell what do i know. do you know when they make this change im certainly no fan of things like that either but i do admit the tighter integration allows a lot of benefits. look at the braking system as an example. due the the inclusion of a full-time abs system all electronically controlled as opposed to half electronic half hydraulic we get a continuously variable rear proportioning valve allowing full-time threshold-type braking power to the rear wheels. with the exception of snow/ice bought it too late for this past season ive tried locking up the brakes on just about every surface and i cant do it. i do get up close and personal with the steering wheel though so the brakes definately do the job. prior to the 02/03 models the brakes werent this good - you either had normal brakes or abs kicking in and if you had the dreaded rwal system you had no brakes . what im getting at is that some good comes from higher levels of electronic sophistication but yeah i think its taking it a bit too far for a damn dome light. again this all changed with the 1500 in my02 and the 2500/3500 in my03. just as the f-16 was nicknamed the electric jet when gd first rolled it out ive nicknamed my 03 the electric truck and is part of the reason i didnt have a problem plunking down the cash for the chrysler service contract. gee tom - your rear license plate illumination module seems to have gone bad. thatll be $1175 for a new one. .
