Help With Engine Indicator Lamp Problem
From : marlin
Q: dear dodge truck amigos i have a well maintained 98 ram1500 4x2 standard cab short bed 318 auto power everything. suddenly after no problems for just over 80000 miles the check engine light came on. i have checked all the fluids and everything else i can think of and i cant find anything wrong. can anyone tell me what the likely problem is is this a phantom alarm that means nothing but is going to cost me $$ at the dealer to get reset i have a trip to the coca-cola 600 in charlotte in a few weeks and i need to get this resolved before then so i can load up the truck and hook up the camper and go down the road with peace of mind and the same confidence ive always had. your help and advice is appreciated. marlin clayton nc .

at 80k it could be any number of things.. possiblity.. gas cap not tight needs replacing. could be egr valve but normally that is a false code.. normally fixed by changing plugs wires cap and rotor cyl # 8 gets corroded. could be o2 sensor could be catalytic converter.. the big thing is the check engine light is 90% emissions crap light and 10% you are screwed light.. go get the stored codes out of it.. if it is the cat you will notice loss of power. if it is the # 8 misfire cap rotor plugs and wires will take care of it could be as simple as last fill up you didnt tighten the fuel cap.. or fueled up while running light should go off on its own after i think 12 good starts dear dodge truck amigos i have a well maintained 98 ram1500 4x2 standard cab short bed 318 auto power everything. suddenly after no problems for just over 80000 miles the check engine light came on. i have checked all the fluids and everything else i can think of and i cant find anything wrong. can anyone tell me what the likely problem is is this a phantom alarm that means nothing but is going to cost me $$ at the dealer to get reset i have a trip to the coca-cola 600 in charlotte in a few weeks and i need to get this resolved before then so i can load up the truck and hook up the camper and go down the road with peace of mind and the same confidence ive always had. your help and advice is appreciated. marlin clayton nc .

yes 16 years with nortel. off topic comments ahead...... it seems they are in a bit of a situation today having fired the ceo and everything. i am sure they will survive and prosper in short order. even after getting laid off after 16 years of service i have nothing bad to say about them and would gladly go to work for them again if the opportunity arose. end off topic comments. i bought and installed a new air filter and gas cap today. minimal investment and worthwhile anyway. if that doesnt help ill go to auto zone. the only thing i need to be sure of in the short term that is is that i can load up hook up the camper and go to charlotte for a few days without causing any major damage. later yall marlin thanks everyone for you helpful replies. even the guy in computers. im a career 26 years telecom guy and just now working on my a+ and net+ certs. most of what i say dowsnt make sense to anyone. rrrrrrrring...rrrrrrrrrring oops got to go..... marlin i got all that stuff that and a dollar will get ya a cup of coffee not at sb. ive been in the business for 33 years. im the old fart they call when nobody else can fix it. if i cant fix it i break the bastard so no one else can either. where you with nortel -- moparman----remove clothes to reply... scud coordinates latitude 32.61208 degrees north longitude 96.92995 degrees west depth 17.35 inches .

moparman wrote replace the gasket on your gas cap........no shit im not kidden. gasket theres an o-ring on the gas cap but most ppl just buy a new gas cap for $10 or less. i would stop by an autozone store and have them read the code for free. a small evap leak is code 442. unfortunatly that is the code that is now on my 2001 dodge qc 5.9l. i have replaced the cap twice. yesterday i looked for leaks on the hoses from the tank to the detector pump and canister. i cant see any obvious leaks so i have no idea where to look now. dealer wants $90 minimum to look at my truck. if its the pump or solenoid it might be covered under extended warranty. dont know. should i take a chance at having to pay $90 and hope they find the problem .

im not in dallas im in raleigh. i went to auto zone and they read the code for me. p0720 - low output speed sensor im not seeing any problems with the drivetrain or speedo/odo so i suspect its a bad sensor. question is this sensor on the diff or the tranny the info i have found says it depends on year/type but i haventfound a specific reference to my truck a 98 1500 yet. marlyn do you work in dallas i used to be on site at nt in richardson. we maintained and still do your sun and hp servers and up till about 2 years ago we took care of all the damn printers. we had 4 guys on site. now we have none and just go there when they issue a po. ive got 2000 shares of nt @ 1.50. maybe someday itll be back up to 30 bucks. -- moparman----remove clothes to reply... scud coordinates latitude 32.61208 degrees north longitude 96.92995 degrees west depth 17.35 inches .
