Q: tbone wrote that is not what it says jerry. if you can add atf+4 to atf+3 then it makes absolutely no sense that you cant do it the other way. the reason that they say this is because atf+3 does not have the required properties for a vehicle requiring atf+4 and using it to top up a atf+4 transmission will weaken those properties i agree and disagree at the same time. reading garys post again he did say in a vehicle requiring type 3 so in a sense he was correct but as i mentioned to t lawrence what is the design change that requires atf+4 in a transmission other than dcs marketing ploy. i suspect there is none but that dc simply wants to keep the market on atf+4 in their court. i would agree that to some degree it may be a marketing ploy especially with the conversions of some transmissions that currently use atf+3 but im not so sure about the current models. they could have changed the makeup on the friction materials and tightened tolerances on the newer transmissions to improve performance and / or efficiency and these new conditions require properties that atf+3 cannot provide. if it was just marketing they could have done it without the significant price increase and still made a shipload of money without the bitching we all give about the high price. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

just curious what was the trade in value if i may ask. i have the same truck with alot of extras including 4x4. bought me a durango over the weekend and need to let mine goit has been a really good truck and still going strong you can go to http//www.kbb.com and get a quote for your truck with the specs in a certain condition. mine ended up being $2000-$3000 because of the exterior body damage that i had never noticed before. the rest of the truck looked good but the air-conditioning didnt work anymore and within the past 2 months it seemed to start to hesitate a bit... i was thinking tranny problems again! so i figured id just trade it in. i went to kelly blue book on line but my truck has been alittle tricked out lots of extras the blue book was about 5500.00 i bumped mine to about 7500.00 wish me luck!! glenn beasley chrysler tech .

tom another point which drives the more frequent change schedule is that diesels do not warm up quickly and consecquently do not boil off the condensation water so easily. this water will mix with the residual sulpher in the oil and create acid which corrodes the oil very rapidly. so in short there are two reasons to change the oil more frequently and they are both temperature related. short trips too cold and severe duty too hot. both cases reduces the lubriction performance of the oil. i have $50000 in my rig. i cant imagine risking that to save $30 on an oil change. steve be careful here. dodge qualifies the 7500 mile change. if for instance you take many small trips in the colder months in which the engine does not warm up completely or if you tow heavy the recommended interval is 3500. not for a cummins. schedule a the impossible light-duty schedule that most people couldnt adhere to is 15000mi intervals. schedule b for normal people is 7500mi. .
