Q: try this next time you do u-joints use a socket and put the driveshaft in a vice. you take less chance of damaging them when done this way take your c-clips out of the groove fit the socket to the hole the bearing cup fits and use the socket to drive the joint out having a press would make this easier but a vice works well. also the side youre hammering against would need to be protected a block of wood will work. installing the new joint get that block of wood tap the bearing cups lightly do it wrong and youll knock the needle bearings loose and have to do it all over. youll know if its wrong the joint will be hard to move by hand.. and yes a c-clamp will still work if you want to skip some of that you only have to get the bearing cups in so the clips will go in. by the way ive turned napa u-joints to powder within 3 months and i know i did it right. replaced with spicer like i wanted in the first place... no problem. i have a 74 d100 with a 318. ive rebuilt the truck twice now..cab bed fenders frame and running gear are original though along with the hood. total mileage on it.. no exact figure but its up around 300k. never replaced axle bearings in the rear...absolute joy to drive. kirk a wolff kirk@kirk.homeip.net wrote in well that was it both front tires were falling apart. i replaced them and it rides like it is supposed to. the rear tires are newer than the fronts were. i picked up a used pair for $40. i was getting anywhere from $280 to $330 to replace the front tires. 16.5 rims are hard to fit. someone suggested going to 15 rims i dont like the idea of that. maybe if i found a set of 17 rims for a good price id go with them. i think im going to buy any future tires from an online store and have them put on for $15 when i replace all four. now i replaced my u-joints and when i stop the truck oscillates as i slow down. from what i remember reading on the subject you will notice a lobeing coming from the back if your u-joints need replacing. since i just replaced them i think maybe i put them in too tight. i used a c-clamp to put them in and out i had to push on the bearing cups pretty hard to get the c-clips on both bearing cups. before putting the driveshaft back in i played around a little with the joints and they seemed stiff. should i back the cups out a little to make them move more freely .

tbone wrote back to spinning what i said again huh miles. i said that many people that dont actually need them are buying them for whatever reason. i am not trying to define anothers needs but if you really believe that every one of them out on the road was bought because the owner needed it you are really an idiot. as for capability ith the possible exception of towing and offroad a minivan can outdue a suv in just about everything including mileage. the problem is that they are not cool like a suv which is the actualy reason most of them are bought. you are the one that said gas guzzling suvs are a problem and these japanese hybrids are a great solution. people who are buying hybrids are not choosing them instead of an suv. these hybrids are only replacing other economy cars. the savings in fuel is peanuts. and you know this how the sales of large suvs has dropped around 25% in the past few months and these people are still buying something. now they may not be hybrids but they are better mileage vehicles and that is what i am really talking about. the all two typical problem with the american car companies is they think short term and with nothing but greed in mind. even though it was obvious to anyone with more than two functioning brain cells that gas prices were sure to rise unlike most peoples pay yet they kept making their vehicles bigger and bigger and making their economy vehicles so boring and ugly nobody would ever want them. and now they are once again taking it in the can for their retarded planning. actually i was wrong. it is actually $450 and yes only liability. it is a third car what more does it need. if its a clunker then liability is fine. if its worth something then possibly comprehensive is needed. while i agree that when a car is worth a considerable amount of money comprehensive is a good idea god forbid if you ever try to put in a claim. this car does not have a high book value anymore and the way i would get raped in charges if i were to put in a claim for it simply makes it not worth it. if someone else hits it and i see it or am in it their insurance pays. which japanese company is producing a hybrid suv well as you mentionedm toyota and lexus. whoa here tbone. first you discount the ford because it wont be out till later then you use toyota and lexus as examples of suv hybrids they wont be out for quite some time. while true toyota has been building modern hybrids for years just not in a suv format. ford otoh is just getting started and still has some learning to do and that pickup from gm is a joke as far as hybrids go. why because they are cool lol. no. suv hybrids make more sense because they will replace those gas guzzling suvs you whine about. hybrid cars you love are bought by people who would have bought an econo car anyways. little savings there to save the world with tbone. there is no proof of this. while hybrid suvs may seem like a good idea in the short term i think that people who buy them will find that they are not all that good as far a mileage goes and will be pretty much a waste of money. no they are using what we have today to get the answer out today not 20 years from now like gm may be doing. gm had its electric cars out many years before anyone else was doing a thing. but they were using technology that simply didnt work because that was all that there was. how many 8 year old 100000 mile hybrids are on the road none as far as i know. they havent been around that long yet. how many 100000 mile hybrids then there are plenty that should have been around long enough for that. they simply do not last that long. really from who there is no benefit in using our own oil over that of others foreign dependency is never a good thing. if it is then explain how it causes no problems. it is not that it causes no problems but there is no way to stop it. we will always be dependant on foreign oil in one form or another and if we use up all of ours first trying to do the impossible then we will really be sol. lol yea sure. please point me to some link that backs this up and explains the difference between explatory and well drilling. you liberals wont allow any type of exploring for oil. period. thats the point. lol perhaps because there are reasons for that like the destructive nature of the oil companies and their refusal to take any responsibility for it. but you are still wrong. exploratory drilling does not require all the same infrastructure as a full blown drilling and pumping operation. i notice that you now added pumping to your definition. i guess that you are learning after all. just because pumping may not happen at the time of drilling it will or there would be no point in drilling to begin with and there are people that dont want to see the few pristine wilderness ar

ok i guess the ram is going back to the dealer again.. 99 qq 2wd 5.9/auto/355 lsd the first time in they changed the u-joints rebuilt the rear end and changed a valve body in the tranny.... the truck shifted correctly again the vibration stopped and the grinding noise went away.. 6 months and maybe 3000 miles later the tranny started a minor version of the same problem.... late or no shift into 3rd... back into the shop they rebuilt the whole tranny.. now 4 or 5 months and about 4000 miles later its got what is either a new problem or a hang over from the old one... wanted a few opinions/guesses before we take it in next week as you guys have been pretty much right every time and it helps when talking to the dealer... especially since all the above work is covered by the warranty we bought from them.. after driving on the freeway when you stop at the exit there is a slipping feel and sound when you move from a stand still again... the 1st time it happened we thought that my wife was just spinning a bit on gravel as it only seems to last for about a second and then doesnt happen again until the next time you pull off the freeway.. we took 2 trips this month to baja and to wa. and it happened at almost every exit that we pulled off on... never seems to do it in traffic or anything just when coming off the freeway... it seems to feel like the right rear wheel but its hard to tell.. maybe a clutch in the limited slip any input appreciated as usual.. thanks.. mac please remove splinters before emailing .

thanks. then it appears weve found why it was running rough. i was baffled because the main belt is ok as were the plugs cap rotor etc. i thought i would still have to diagnose that after the new pulley arrives. ill treat it as good . and im assuming no damage running it off a few teeth just rough running. more good . steve@carolinabreezehvac.com webmaster@carolinabreezehvac.com wrote in im fooling with my neighbors 1988 ram 50 with the 2.0 liter mitsu engine. upon removing the timing belt cover ball bearings fell over the floor. there are 2 belts under there. the main timing belt and pulleys are ok. there is a smaller toothed belt between the crank and what i assume is the oil pump. the idler pulley between them is what is toast. thats a counter balance shaft...it rides in oil altho its no pump. now if this second belt runs the oil pump like i think why is there a timing mark on the sprocket this is whats leading me to think it might not be the oil pump. if not what is it and how critical is the mark is there probable damage if the the motor was running it was with a completely disintegrated idler pulley if you get it out of time it can be real fun to try to figure out why its seeming to miss like hell all the time.... make sure you get it back in time right. its been so damn long since i did one that i suggest you do what we would do....get a manual or a chiltons etc..and get the mark positions correct. .
