Q: one recent sunday i was working on our 1997 dodge caravan se that was bought new. the gauges had suddenly stopped working off and on for the past few months and now they had stopped working again. the service engine came on. we checked the code and we would always get code 66. it had something to do with either the body control module and the transmission control module not giving out a signal according to our haynes book. what seems to have worked for us we ran through the automatic gears while the car was running in the driveway and then we lightly hit the top of the cluster a few times. the gauge cluster started working. it has been a little over a week and the clusters are still working. we took a 6 hour trip in the caravan this past weekend and the clusters are still working for your information before we decided to run through all the automatic gears we tried steps that had workded for us in the past when the gauges stopped working but these steps did not seem to work for us this time 1. we disconnected the battery for about 15 minutes. 2. we took out that little red fuse in the fuse box under the hood for a few minutes. 3. we banged very hard several times on the top of the cluster but nothing happened. this banging used to work in the past. 4. we checked all the fuses under the hood and inside under the steering wheel that had anything to do with the gauge cluster. 5. my thought maybe it was a combination of disconnecting the battery checking and removing the gauge cluster fuses and finally moving the gear lever through the gears of p-r-d-3-l while the car was running. maybe the computers needed to get a signal from all the gears--prd3l---in order for the main computer to keep the gauge cluster working properly. maybe it was just luck that we got the guages to work again. 6. note a week before we seemed to have fixed the guage cluster problem we took the caravan to a local dealer for a diagnosis costing $90. the dealer wanted $800 to try to fix the gauge problem. but we didnt have the money at the time so we said no thanks and we did not have the dealer work on the problem. 7. . right now we are glad that we declined the dealers diagnosis and $800 repair bill because the gauge cluster problem seems to be corrected now. 8. i dont know if what we did---shifiting through the automatic prd3l gears while the car was running---will help other caravan owners with the same gauge cluster problems. still i post what we did in case other caravan owners run out of ideas and would like to try what worked for us. note just about every time i get in the car now ---which is almost every day---i shift through all the automatic gears several times while the car is running in order to make sure that the computer gets a signal from all the gears. so far the gauges are still working and it has been almost 10 days since we got the gauges to work again. .
