HEMI gas question (mixing your own gas?)
From : dale luck
Q: with the price of gas being over $1.60 its not possible to get a fillup of 30 gallons and charge it on the credit card without needing to plug the machine twice because of the $50 limit per charge. ive also noticed the large price jump out here in california from 87 to 89 octane and a smaller jump to 91 octane. so since i need to plug the machine twice ive started to mix my own gas filling it up with about 20 gallons of 87 and then finishing it up with 91 assuming a 30 gallon fill 30 * 2.26 = $67.8 20 * 2.10 = $42.00 10 * 2.36 = $23.60 total cost of mix = 65.60 a savings of about $2 per fillup and gas that seems to burn just fine with pretty good performance. i could do a more 50/50 mix and still save $1 per fillup. dluck .

my mechanic told me it was perfectly ok to run 87 octane regular in my hemi. tell me if he is full of it should i be putting in midgrade or higher i have noticed no degradation in motor performance by running 87. jake .

if the engine is not showing any loss of performance and is not pinging then go ahead and use it. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving my mechanic told me it was perfectly ok to run 87 octane regular in my hemi. tell me if he is full of it should i be putting in midgrade or higher i have noticed no degradation in motor performance by running 87. jake .

followed the original post with interest since i have a 2003 1500 2wd hemi. i have had the truck a little over a year 13000+ miles and have always run premium since i figured anything with 9+ compression could benefit from it. recently primarily due to ever increasing gas prices i decided to run regular 87 gas up at costco options 87 91 or mix it yourself. i have put 3 tankfulls of regular though the truck so far...now for the funny part first i have not noticed any performance decrease. i only stomp the thing for the occaisional merge situation at least thats the excuse and it still handles that rather smartly as it always did. second for a years worth of premium my mileage ranged between 14 to 15 mpg. for the 3 tanks of regular my mileage has been between 16 and 17. no change in driving habiits...mostly just ot work and back with a mix of freeway and in town driving. this is not what i expected...any thoughts thanks. ....jjc... with the price of gas being over $1.60 its not possible to get a fillup of 30 gallons and charge it on the credit card without needing to plug the machine twice because of the $50 limit per charge. ive also noticed the large price jump out here in california from 87 to 89 octane and a smaller jump to 91 octane. so since i need to plug the machine twice ive started to mix my own gas filling it up with about 20 gallons of 87 and then finishing it up with 91 assuming a 30 gallon fill 30 * 2.26 = $67.8 20 * 2.10 = $42.00 10 * 2.36 = $23.60 total cost of mix = 65.60 a savings of about $2 per fillup and gas that seems to burn just fine with pretty good performance. i could do a more 50/50 mix and still save $1 per fillup. dluck .
