Q: jmc wrote well i realize that. i am an american after all. ive even taken the greyhound across most of the country in my youth. i often hear this excuse but im not really buying it especially since i understand that europes public transport system is equally robust but having little experience with public transport there i cant say for sure. im talking about local munincipalities with their own bus system connecting to others. not one all-encompassing monopoly or govt run system. i dont really see any reason why this wouldnt work well at least along most of the east coast if you needed to go west youd still get on a greyhound. why is this not possible in the us seems to me it should be. you have to look at who is doing the traveling any why. transportation on the east coast does make more sense where cities are closer together. but in the usa how many people need to go from one 20k town to another on a daily basis trains are considerably more common and more popular in the east coast. many small towns in the usa do have transportation between them. usually small shuttle buses or large vans that make a few trips a day. they are usually private run. the other major reason why they are few is because more people in the usa have cars to travel the greater distances. as long as you have a car youll use it for shorter trips to small towns as well. in big major cities such as san franscisco many people do not have cars. parking spaces are at a premium for one thing and public transportation is effective there. .

that is because your dad is from a time when things were built to last unlike the junk that we have to deal with and accept as normal today. once again you prove yourself full of shit. the current a500/518/618/42/44/46/47/48rh/e are all the same design as the a727 and a904 transmissions. pull apart a 727 and the guts from it will interchange with the guts from the three speed section of a 46 with no differences except the tailshaft. the only other differences in going to the 47/48 are numbers of clutch plates so the drums have the snap ring groove cut in a different location. the real difference which you have claimed to be smart enough to know is the heat generated by the od unit. this breaks down the atf which is what causes most of the failures associated with the od transmissions. youve read that here many times and its the only point on which you agree with transsurgeon yet you couldnt dig it up from your morass of knowledge. -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. that is because your dad is from a time when things were built to last unlike the junk that we have to deal with and accept as normal today. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving well found out dad was slack and never had the tranny serviced.sounds like i should drop the pan and have it flushed outthen refilled with atf+4. hes 78 years old so ill cut him a break. own a 99 quad ctd 2wd with around 75k and do a fair amount of towing 8k 5er. try to change mine every 15k as suggested by the shop manual for heavy use. have had both atf3 and atf4 put in by dc service techs at different dealerships in different parts of the country. obviously two trains of thought going on here. what is the difference between the two types...is one synthetic . also...thanks for the tips tom. fred jim schultz wrote i bought the truck used from my dad who had it since new.all of the reccomended service mileage points in the manual are filled out so i think he had it done several times.a phone call could confirm that. when you change yours and dont drop the pando you use the flush type systemguess thats the only way yes ive had it flushed by the dealership with atf+4. i have a 2001 ram 5.9l. i also changed the pan to an aftermarket slight deeper one with a drain plug and temp sensor hole. if i tow long distance on a hot day ill quickly drain the pan and at least get 5 quarts or so replaced. easy to do with the drain plug. .

gee max such a solid defense of the superiority of the cummins. how could anyone dispute this lol! -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving yup after several years of blown head gaskets they lowered the compression ratio. and ooowheee its got glow plugs its still a v8 where an inline six is better. -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. as usual max was wrong!!!! the duramax diesel is still going strong after several years of proven reliability. 2006 duramax 6600 turbodiesel to deliver class-leading torque in a more powerful and refined package engine output for chevy silverado hd and gmc sierra hd increased to 360 horsepower and a class-leading 650 lb-ft of torque new glow-plugs reduce start time by as much as 50 percent pontiac mich. later this year gm powertrain will introduce a new 6.6l duramax 6600 turbodiesel v-8 rpo lbz for the 2006 model year chevy silverado hd and gmc sierra hd with class-leading horsepower 360 268 kw at 3200 rpm and class-leading torque at 650 lb.-ft. 881 nm at 1600 rpm. in addition to the power increase in the silverado and sierra all 2006 duramax engines have been significantly revised to deliver lower emissions and significantly improved quietness and smoothness in every application. the 2006 silverado hd and sierra hd with the allison 6-speed automatic transmission will be equipped with a significantly revised 310 horsepower duramax 6600 lly through the third quarter of 2005. it will be replaced in these applications in the fourth quarter of 2005 by the higher output 360-horsepower duramax lbz. othe introduction of the duramax diesel in 2001 represented a significant evolution in north american diesel pick-up truck market and propelled gmts heavy duty diesel pick-up truck market share to over 25 percentage points said charles freese gm powertrain executive director diesel engineering. othe introduction of the improved 2006 duramax turbo diesel once again sets a new benchmark to which all others will be measured. the duramax 6600ts horsepower and torque increase and emissions reduction are enabled by a strengthened iron cylinder block and a lower compression ratio. the lower compression reduces stress on the engine by reducing the peak cylinder firing pressure. this in turn allows more fuel to be burned more fuel means more power while the lower compression helps reduce nox emissions. lower compression also helps reduce noise and vibration making the all variants of the 6600 a quieter and smoother engine. a revised variable-geometry turbocharger also enhances the driving experience of the duramax 6600. aerodynamic changes to the turbots vanes help tailor controlled application of turbo power for seamless and immediate response at full throttle. the turbo which spins at up to 120000 rpm is high-speed-balanced reducing vibration and resonance and contributing to the enginets overall smoothness and refinement. the revised turbo also helps reduce emissions while maximum boost remains at 20 psi. another new feature of the duramax 6600ts turbo system is the capability of the variable-geometry turbocharger to provide exhaust braking. this function is available on some medium-duty truck models and can replace add-on exhaust brake hardware. with the new system braking is controlled by a signal from the engine controller and can be activated by the driver. the comprehensive list of changes and upgrades to the 2006 duramax 6600 includes * cylinder block casting and machining changes strengthen the bottom of the cylinder bores to support increased horsepower and torque * upgraded main bearing material increases durability * revised piston design helps lower compression ratio to 16.81 from 17.51 * piston pin bore diameter increased for increased strength * connecting rod o i section is thicker for increased strength * cylinder heads revised to accommodate lower compression and reduced cylinder firing pressure * maximum injection pressure increased from 23000 psi to more than 26000 psi * fuel delivered via higher-pressure pump fuel rails distribution lines and all-new seven-hole fuel injectors * fuel injectors spray directly onto glow plugs providing faster better-quality starts and more complete cold-start combustion for reduced emissions * improved glow plugs heat up faster through an independent controller * revised variable-geometry turbocharger is aerodynamically more efficient to help deliver smooth and immediate response and lower emissions * air induction system re-tuned to enhance quietness * egr has larger cooler to bring more exhaust into the system * first application of new 32-bit e35 controller which adjusts and compensates for the fuel flow to bolster efficiency and reduce emissions the duramax 6600 also has a new intake air heate

after the storm was handled better there would be far fewer victims to begin with. we agree here. but thats not what this discussion is about. its about where best to spend politicians time and taxpayers money now. it most certainly is or at lest was until the paranoid right wing like yourself came jumping in crying that it was somehow an attack against bush and the republicans. i also agree that we need to properly spend the politicians time and taxpayer dollars but the politicians time is not completely taken up by the recovery anymore if it ever was and a lot of taxpayer money would have been saved had this situation been handled better and will also be wasted should this same poor response happen again. as for my interest yet more bs from you. there is no reason why both cannot be done especially since the ones doing the helping would have little to do with the investigation and vise versa. politicians are the ones directing the help. oh bullshit. lets see a list of names and exactly what they are doing along with the time they are spending. you want to pin them down in pointless finger pointing investigations that have only one purpose. why would that happen do you intend to lock them in rooms and not let them out until the investigation is over political points to score for all sides. look at investigations for anything else the past several decades. anything really worthwhile sometimes yes but with this administration not really. now this is not an attack on bush for the current situation but does make me suspicious of how any investigation will turn out. wrong again! my interest is to begin the investigation asap to prevent important details from being lost which is exactly what you want to happen. resources are better used actually helping people rather than bickering about whos fault it was. resources and taxpayer money are better used to prevent the same situation form occurring again. see tbone you just want to play the blame game. no i want to find out what went wrong while the facts are clear and do what is required to prevent it form happening again dont you its now about whos fault anything was. just find what went wrong and fix it without worrying about your precious political rants tossed into the mix. now how are you going to do that without an investigation. even bush says that it just didnt go right and while today he said that the buck stops with him impressive what really went wrong needs to be determined asap so that it can be corrected. perhaps you forgot that hurricane season is not over yet and we could get hit again this year. lol since they can both easily be done at the same time there is no reason not to trouble is they cant and shouldnt be done at the same time. you want to tie up politicians time and resources for your political biased pissing contest. yes it can and if that is what they do instead if continuing to do their jobs and answer the questions quickly and to the best of their ability then they need to be replaced. it seems that the real enabler here is you and people like you. look at your posts here. you keep talking about bush needs to take blame..blah blah blah. no i said that his administration never takes the blame for anything although that changed today and that is not the same thing. ya youre really interested in finding the problem and finding solutions...youre already trying to bash bush. good grief. only in your sad twisted spin. it truly is sad that you are more concerned with your god and his cabinet getting even the remotest form of blame or responsibility for the piss poor response rather than preventing something like this from happening again. there ya go again already pointing fingers at only one area...bush and company. lol i did no such thing. please read it again and comprehend it this time. how am i more concerned about bush and company when theres far more involved on both sides because you are trying to twist everything into an attack against your god and could care less about what actually happened or how to fix it. guess that means im concerned about blanco and niger as well. whats sad is that youre concern is about this investigation rather than pushing hard to help those effected now. my concern is that the exact same thing doesnt happen again. exactly what pushing are you doing to help those affected now poor spin miles. it is you that will cry foul if any blame falls on the current administration and decisions made by them that in part lead up lol one more time you are already attempting to lean any investigation towards bush and company. it is you that is crying foul that blame isnt on bush and the current administration. lol wrong again. bush himself took the blame although i dont think t

i replaced my original shocks last year on my 97 1500 4x4 with some cheapo pro-comp es9000s. my front end started to bounce like crazy when i hit a bump at speeds over about 40mph to the point id have to stop the truck to get it back under control. i replaced the trackbar with the moog replacement i thought that might help but it didnt. i then went on ahead and had a front end alignment done and no improvement. i spent some more money and replaced the cheapos with the monroe sensatrac shocks. i figured that would probably correct it. nope. this is a stock truck no lift kit and and stock-sized tires. it seems like the front drivers side tire is bouncing like a basketball when it happens. ive double-checked air pressure in the tires and they seem ok. the tires are a couple of years old with maybe 20k on them goodyear something or other. any ideas on what to try .

i just picked up my five month old 2005 dodge ram diesel from the body shop. the truck had a four inch long vertical dent about as wide and deep as a finger that crossed the contour line of the left rear fender where our travel trailer jacknifed against it as i was attempting to turn around at walking speed in a cul-de-sac. when i took the truck in to be repaired i asked the body shop owner if he could repair the dent or if he would need to replace the box. oh nooooo... he said we dont need to replace the box... we can fix the dent. after the initial repair of the dent i noticed several areas of ripples in the finish of the fender repair. i returned to the body shop and told them to fix it. after the second attempt to repair the fender the ripples were fixed but coarse sanding marks dust particles and pin-point defects were present in the finish. the sanding marks were so coarse it looked like somebody had applied the paint with a bristle brush. so i took the truck back a third time. after picking the truck up ok no ripples..... no sanding marks but the styling crease formed into the fender at the factory - has a noticeably softer edge for approximately 8 inches horizontally over the area of repair. i can also feel a dip in the surface of the fender roll at this spot. i went back to the shop raised hell and they refunded my money $500. but now i have to find another body shop to fix this right. can you folks suggest any tips for finding a reputable body shop thanks... jim .

you are correct and much of this planning should have occured before the storm. any planning after it should only be dealing with the unexpected. well the way they say the flooding in no was unexpected. obviously that is a major disruption to plans if in fact they were following any. lol completely not true. they were expecting major flooding during the storm and when it didnt happen right away they thought that they got off lucky until the levees failed that it. yea probably because your governor knows now to begin planning and gathering supplies when the storm is expected not after it hits so your local people have what they need to do their jobs. i dont care how much your local people know it they dont have what they need they can do nothing. actually it was a local senator by the name of dan flood no im not joking that had a major part in getting state and fed funding to build a floodwall. our governor has had very little to do with our plans and the one we have now probably would rather talk football than govern. i will say this in rendells favor he has said he will find state funding to erect a floodwall at the next town up if the feds wont fund it. ok fine. either way you are now prepared to some degree for if it happens again and i doubt that the people in charge will wait until after the next major stor in your area to even begin the planning. the uscg was there within hours. with nothing. 20 helos with rescue equipment was nothing for the level of damage and number of people in trouble yea i would say nothing. ng branches were there within a day. and should have been there within hours. you do realize the ng is made up from people who live in the affected area beyond that itll take a day to get other state ng activated. they should have been activated prior to the storm since they knew that it was comming. simple answer plan ahead and be prepared next time. hurricanes are not surprise events like an earthquake or a tornado. but according to another thread you claim the path is unpredictable..... whatever.... yes it is but a storm that powerful is going to cause significant damage to wherever it strikes and we should have been somewhat ready for it and we simply dropped the ball big time. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

with all the talk about k&n and the claims and disclaimers etc. what upgrades are recommended and why absolutely positively no k&n filtration systems of any kind on your engine. they simply dont filter enough particulate matter. afes pg7 filters have been shown through oil analysis to work well as well as the uni dual-stage foam filters being used in the scotty air systems intakes. whats your purpose for looking to upgrade more top-end power better fuel economy quicker acceleration i see ads in tdr for air tabs for chips for dual exhaust for induction systems etc. there are several different fueling boxes as well as tuners available that work well. fueling boxes are add-on modules that trick the ecm into delivering more fuel or delivering fuel sooner - tuners re-program the ecm directly to alter the fuel and timing curves. on the low-end 40-70hp boxes like the edge ez and the quadzilla xzt are popular add-ons. in the mid-range 80-120hp you have the edge juice the quadzilla xzillaraider and the bullydog powerpup this is a tuner. on the high-end 140-200hp theres the edge hot juice just a software upgrade to the juice the xzillaraider race version the bullydog powerpup w/ their crazy larry program or the tst powermaxcr with either the standard program or the twin-turbo program. with all but the low-end here you dont just slap these things on and go... you need to address other areas such as the intake get more air at less restriction into the turbo to help lower egts the exhaust gotta get all that air and burned fuel out - less restriction is better here as well the turbo stock turbos will run out of their efficiency range and/or choke off the exhaust stream making for high egts the fuel supply a higher capacity pump is needed to keep the fuel pressure to the injection pump in the positive region when adding more fuel and the drivetrain clutch/transmission upgrades are necessary to cope with the added power. entire books can be written on this subject as needs and goals vary widely from person to person. what exactly are you looking to get out of your truck .

there just isnt the demand for rail if you have a car. were in upstate ny and have relatives in chantilly va. weve looked at taking a train down. on top of being considerably more expensive than taking our care not to mention the convenience of having our car when we get there the trip was over 24 hours. shoot we drive it in 6. lets see. slower more expensive less convenient. three great reason to hop on. now if you dont have a vehicle thats another story. on fri 02 sep 2005 204237 gmt max dodge max340@verizon.net wrote why is this not possible in the us seems to me it should be. damn right it should be. why not because president after president democrat and republican alike with congressional blessing urging even has screwed amtrak until it had just enough to survive on. this country at one time had a massive passenger rail system. with the advent of air travel and then the interstates rail travel became obsolete. this rail system was imo the single biggest factor in keeping this country productive and able to out produce its enemies in wwii. said a german pow held in the mid west as he looked out and saw a up big boy 250 tons or so pulling what seemed a never ending train if this country can make that there must be more and if so germany will lose. the northeast corridor boston to d.c. basically paralleling i-95 is the backbone of amtrak in the east. this corridor is literally one disaster away from being inoperable due to cuts in funding. not helping the cause were the acela trainsets which in june turned up with 30% failure rate in the brake rotors. if we funded passenger rail between cities enough to keep the service dependable for two years maximum ran it at rates and times which made it worth the lack of independance given by a personal vehicle we could actually have a rail system worth talking about. whats more since it runs on freight trackage the upgrades for passenger trains would improve the service of hotshot freights such as mail ups fresh produce etc. union pacific has entered a multi year plan to upgrade and build new terminals. this began as a result of having to give up a contract with united parcel service due to more traffic than the major lines in its system could handle. the track was fine but the amount of room for all the freight cars was just not there. if amtrak were in a position to do so they could contract with up to assist in the improvements if given trackage rights. however in the case of amtrak it has always been a struggle between free enterprise and governmental subsidy of passenger rail. its time government took its we know better attitude and used it to improve not only our rail system but our energy policy as well. .

but that was a f t e r the storm and supplies should have been ready before it hit and were not. the storm was 100 miles wide and affected an area larger than the state of mississippi. where would you put supplies and troops if you were the governor of any of these states keep in mind the ng troops will be affected by the storm so calling them up will take time. getting the troops to their gathering points will take time due to the storm. once gathered they wil lhave to organize and go back 50-100 miles. it takes time. the first ng troops locals were on scene wednesday unarmed though they were because their weapons were moved north to keep them out of harms way. day 1 saturday - assessment and assumption of probable needs. based on what storm size storm size possible landfall locations probability of levee failures due to there age as well as the strength of the storm number of people that have no way out of the area. hell the national guard should have been mobilized friday to begin moving some of these people the hell out of there. ok lets assume all this is factored in. the mayor and the governor are the ones who have to do this. they are the leadership that knows these details. so who are you blaming for it day 2 sunday - logistical planning and gathering of supplies and personnel based on above. gathered where in the city yea like the astro dome and inland away from the flood prone areas. sure there is a risk of losing some of them but at least there would be something where and when it was needed. ok the astrodome is 350 miles away meaning it would take a day to get them to the astrodome and a day to get back. so youve added at least a day to the mobilization. remember these people are supposed to be local so either you respect that they need to care for their family or you take in the whole family while they are mobilized. either one adds time. day 3 monday - reassess situation and needs. begin initial deployment during the storm the storm was out of there by monday afternoon. yeah it was going through the area where all these ng troops live. day 4 tuesday - full deployment to region with what is needed or available based on prior assessment while gathering any additional supplies and personnel that may also be needed. begin initial operations. day 5 wednesday - operation fully commences! wow five days instead of the three i claimed. brilliantly proving that three days is great response time. you are aware that uscg and military helos were on scene by tuesday right wow a few helos with no supplies at all. what happened to monday night and all fucking day tuesday considering that the helos came from the affected area proper time has to be taken to check for storm damage. by tuesday uscg was pulling people from rooftops. priority is given to lifesaving rescues particularly in the case of the uscg. they were still doing this on thursday thus they were still on priority one. three days to get on scene and operational. not bad. yes it was because many of your steps should have been done before the storm even hit. by tuesday they should have been ready to roll with something. even if its possible the people who make that a reality are the local governments and the governor. like i said a day late with nothing. they should have been there monday night dropping initial supplies that were stored before the storm like water and some food. sorry max but your lame justifications and bs time line simply dont cut it. sorry tbone but your insistance that the uscg is a relief agency fails to take into account their primary mission is to rescue people and thats what they did. right after they checked for storm damage on their equipment. -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. lol most of this should have happened before monday. as you said in the fuel price thread nowa had a pretty good idea where and how strong it was going to be when is made land fall. the fact that they had the evacuation showed that they knew what was possible so they could have made many accurate assumptions as to what was going to be needed prior to the storm hitting. the real time line should have been no i said noaa had a clue. i dont know who nowa is. it was a typo get over it. as to accurate predictions your flawed assumption fails to take into account their flawed assumptions about their levees and the biggest variable number of people trapped in a disaster that was believed to have been avoided. but that was a f t e r the storm and supplies should have been ready before it hit and were not. day 1 saturday - assessment and assumption of probable needs. based on what storm size storm size possible landfall locations probability of levee failures due to there age as well as the strength of t

the entire city is not under water. western amd northwestern no are dry. so yes planes could drop supplies there. on buildings you do realize that planes cannot accurately drop supplies right there are no smart palates. large boats cannot navigate through the city but they can supply the coastline to the west of no and take in supplies on smaller boats. not perfect but better than nothing which is what they got. what way is there to get from the coastline facilities if any to the city logistics of transport from any drop zone is part of the problem that takes time. and ... are you telling me that a handful of helicopters is the best we can do i read that less than 50 helicopters were involved. how many do you want 50 helos means 150 men on crew and up to 500 ground crew. thats 650 crew without talking about landing zones fuel co-ordination for flight operations etc. the uscg only has 211 helos total with 3-5 guesstimate from facts culled from the uscg 8th division websites from each of four air stations in the 8th divisions territory. wow a full 10% of the uscg helos were on duty and flying if possible. wanna bet others came in from outside the 8th divisions area if all those 50 were uscg thats 25% of a national force. that is a one hell of a mobilization. i tried to find some research i did in college on earthquakes to no avail. however in cali i cant think of a single major earthquake that went more than 2 days without an outpooring of aid from various state and federal agencies. you might make the argument that the areas were not under water but the challenges were just as great. roads and bridges out structures collapsing no electricity ... well considering the uscg was flying within a day of the storm passing this disaster response falls within your criteria. given that anyone who has actually been in the area claims its worse than anything theyve seen adding an extra day to your two quoted above isnt out of reason. -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. the entire city is not under water. western amd northwestern no are dry. so yes planes could drop supplies there. large boats cannot navigate through the city but they can supply the coastline to the west of no and take in supplies on smaller boats. not perfect but better than nothing which is what they got. and ... are you telling me that a handful of helicopters is the best we can do i read that less than 50 helicopters were involved. i tried to find some research i did in college on earthquakes to no avail. however in cali i cant think of a single major earthquake that went more than 2 days without an outpooring of aid from various state and federal agencies. you might make the argument that the areas were not under water but the challenges were just as great. roads and bridges out structures collapsing no electricity ... craig c. .

yes the response could have been faster. air drops of food and supplies. medical personnel centrally located and clean up crews to gather the dead. all could be done within 48 hours. if you disagree ... then tell me why. what is so unreasonable about a 48 hour response like i described above there are plenty of volunteers ... just no direction. direction == leadership 48 hours in what vehicles can you put 10000 troops any troops red cross ng whatever with no clear road in no gasoline and no mass quantities of supplies three days is the fastest it can be done and here we are three days into the crisis and all of that and more is rolling in. you cannot simply drop stuff on crowds its heavy and will kill people. follow your own advice ... do something. the no mayor said it best get off your asses! indeed perhaps the ablebodied among the crowds could walk the hell out provide direction and information to the rescuers and maybe even assistance. general rule in a crisis become part of the solution not the problem. as i see the video im curious why some in those crowds looking for relief supplies didnt take initiative and clear a landing zone for a helicopter. id bet good money that most of the reason they refused to land is the safety factor of having an unruly crowd under spinning rotor blades. -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. yes the response could have been faster. air drops of food and supplies. medical personnel centrally located and clean up crews to gather the dead. all could be done within 48 hours. if you disagree ... then tell me why. what is so unreasonable about a 48 hour response like i described above there are plenty of volunteers ... just no direction. direction == leadership btw kerry is an idiot too. there now do you feel better have i stroked your feathers the right way now follow your own advice ... do something. the no mayor said it best get off your asses! craig c. .

so max are you telling me that there is nothing the federal government can do in the time of a national crises they can draft young men right out of their homes ... but they cant call on state support for ng involvement bingo. you have to understand that the united states are states first and a nation second as odd as it sounds. as such the ng is under the command of the state unless they leave the country. my previous post has a couple of links you should look at. now if you want to argue that the usnavy is a latecomer and should have been ordered into the gulf days ago ill readily agree. but still we are looking at a case where the state has to call for support in order to allow what amounts to landing federal troops on state territory. imo if i were in command of a fleet i would have had ships standing off florida waiting for orders to go in. but id still have to answer for my actions if no call for help came in. basically put our government has always been reactionary not proactionary. in some ways the very laws that keep us independant as states are the exact reason the feds cannot get involved more quickly. it takes three days from the situation assessment to actual deployment on scene. assessment came on tuesday morning its now friday and troops are rolling in. recall it took four days until any large scale relief hit the tsunami area last christmas. the federal goverment can call on ng troops and ang texas air national guard i know for sure troops in the times of crises. if you disagree then you have to explain the tangs federal involvement during the vietnam war. which ironically bush was suposedly part of. easy check the link i had in my last post. ng is under state command while in the u.s. federal command outside the u.s. times of crisis has to be taken in context what crisis and where is the crisis. and ... btw im not bush bashing anymore than i would be kerry bashing if he reacted the same way. whats interesting to me is that there are people that will defend that idiot regardless of the facts. its almost cult-like. well assuming you would bash kerry in like circumstances its clear you do not have a good picture of what potus can and cannot do despite being potus. -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. so max are you telling me that there is nothing the federal government can do in the time of a national crises they can draft young men right out of their homes ... but they cant call on state support for ng involvement the federal goverment can call on ng troops and ang texas air national guard i know for sure troops in the times of crises. if you disagree then you have to explain the tangs federal involvement during the vietnam war. which ironically bush was suposedly part of. and ... btw im not bush bashing anymore than i would be kerry bashing if he reacted the same way. whats interesting to me is that there are people that will defend that idiot regardless of the facts. its almost cult-like. craig c. .

sadly even though david gunn speaks factually and without reserve the feds still arent doing much to fix amtrak. consider that if the ne corridor had trains and track capable of the suggested speeds that the acela can reach we would have round trip service from boston to d.c. 4-5 times during working hours and up to ten times a day. think about how many cars that would remove from i-95. think about the number of ball games within reasonable time/distance let alone the possible implications for saving commuter traffic and the boon to business. now think about how nicely a line from philly to harrisburg pittsburgh through ohio and on to chicago would work. then drop one from chicago to the gulf.... wait we had this once and it worked wonderfully. hmmm........ -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. why cant amtrack make a profit on their own because it wasnt designed to do so. amtrak is the orphan of the rail bankruptcy of the ne u.s. in the 1970s. amtrak started with junk facilities and a promise to fund rehab work until it could survive on its own. this has never been fully realized because the feds consistantly underfund it. compared to what it began with amtrak is shorter on routemiles barely more modern and headed for complete bankruptcy. well said. meanwhile conrail the freight entity created at the same time was funded consistantly until it was able to turn itself into a profitable corporation owned by the federal government. since the government in theory isnt supposed to own something where the private sector would be in competition conrail was offered to the highest bidder in the 90s iirc. it was eventually split between two railraods csx corp and norfolk southern. amtraks biggest problem imo has been the lack of trackage it can call its own usually sharing route miles with freight rail. in many cases it uses the rail lines owned by freight railroads. thus it is at the mercy of the freight roads in terms of scheduling stations and at times motive power. very true especially in ct they are stuck behind locals all the time. if this country changes its attitude towards how amtrak is structured and towards energy policies that dont have long term goals maybe amtrak will work. very true but they need some people in there that know how to run a railroad. a politically appointed board of directors that changes with administrations does it no good either. for steve scott this is where i first ran into haley barbour he was appointed to the amtrak bod. didnt know shit about railroad but that didnt stop him from fucking it up. roy -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. suddenly without warning steve scott exclaimed 02-sep-05 1004 pm there just isnt the demand for rail if you have a car. were in upstate ny and have relatives in chantilly va. weve looked at taking a train down. on top of being considerably more expensive than taking our care not to mention the convenience of having our car when we get there the trip was over 24 hours. shoot we drive it in 6. lets see. slower more expensive less convenient. three great reason to hop on. now if you dont have a vehicle thats another story. see thats what i mean! i remember being on the last trip of the last passenger train to go through my hometown on the d&h lines. my brother was a babe in arms so thatd make it - late 60s i guess. 24 hours is pretty excessive. i wouldnt mind if it took a bit longer than 6 hours - say 10 or even 12 - because the hassles still less than driving. as long as the price is right. it costs a bit to go to london on the train - equivalent of about $130 for a saver fare round-trip last i did it ive seen specials for 19 quid - but as the rides less than 3 hours and theres a complete lack of aggravation involved with the 5 hour drive first on the motorway then into the city. get there early and you can even get a seat with a table. and some trains even have wireless internet now! id take the train to ny all the time if we had the same service in the us. heck id take it anywhere which is what we do here. off to york tomorrow. im not sure that govt subsidies is the way to go though - down that path lies socialism which while not evil isnt the way *i* want our country to go. why cant amtrack make a profit on their own jmc .

just have to put labels on people dont you is that part of the contract when you become a registered republican im not a democrat or a leftie as you put it. anyone too far to the right is just as mis-informed as someone that is too far left. and yes bush could have done more! to day is friday ... got that friday ... the storm hit monday! ng and supplies got there today. once again today is friday. it does not take 4-5 days to get relief to a location outside the u.s. so why did it take that long inside the u.s. i can tell you ... lack of leadership. before you go off the deep end you should consider how the government works in relation to the states. first yes the prez got aid off to indonesia in a hell of a hurry! why then could he not get aid to nawlins that fast simple it is not a federal issue until the states specifically request federal assistance. the prez has control of the us military for foreign operations and thus could order them into action immediately after the tsunami hit indonesia. the prez has zero control over the national guard when it operates in the us. the several states governors are the ngs cinc thus it is incumbent upon the governors to order them into action. in the event of a natural disaster within the borders of the us the federal government has no jurisdiction until help is requested by the affected states. that is why you always hear that such and such governor has requested that the president declare the area a national disaster area. then and only then can the feds rush in to help. now having clarified that point which many dont stop to consider i dont think three days is too damned bad to get a huge bureaucracy like the federal gummint moving. have you ever served in the military do you know how long it takes to plan prepare and provision for a major operation probably not. go ahead and bush bash all you want but trust me imho he is doing all he can and rather than carp second-guess and otherwise bitch about a bad situation we should pray for the folks in the affected area and find a way to help however we can. mike i cant believe you are actually defending his leadership in this situation. perhaps if you were there or had family there you would feel differently. but then that would require you and jon to think of someone else other than yourselves. what do you care ... your taxes are lower. in your minds bush can do no wrong correct again i say un-fricken-believable. craig c. .

why cant amtrack make a profit on their own because it wasnt designed to do so. amtrak is the orphan of the rail bankruptcy of the ne u.s. in the 1970s. amtrak started with junk facilities and a promise to fund rehab work until it could survive on its own. this has never been fully realized because the feds consistantly underfund it. compared to what it began with amtrak is shorter on routemiles barely more modern and headed for complete bankruptcy. well said. meanwhile conrail the freight entity created at the same time was funded consistantly until it was able to turn itself into a profitable corporation owned by the federal government. since the government in theory isnt supposed to own something where the private sector would be in competition conrail was offered to the highest bidder in the 90s iirc. it was eventually split between two railraods csx corp and norfolk southern. amtraks biggest problem imo has been the lack of trackage it can call its own usually sharing route miles with freight rail. in many cases it uses the rail lines owned by freight railroads. thus it is at the mercy of the freight roads in terms of scheduling stations and at times motive power. very true especially in ct they are stuck behind locals all the time. if this country changes its attitude towards how amtrak is structured and towards energy policies that dont have long term goals maybe amtrak will work. very true but they need some people in there that know how to run a railroad. a politically appointed board of directors that changes with administrations does it no good either. for steve scott this is where i first ran into haley barbour he was appointed to the amtrak bod. didnt know shit about railroad but that didnt stop him from fucking it up. roy -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. suddenly without warning steve scott exclaimed 02-sep-05 1004 pm there just isnt the demand for rail if you have a car. were in upstate ny and have relatives in chantilly va. weve looked at taking a train down. on top of being considerably more expensive than taking our care not to mention the convenience of having our car when we get there the trip was over 24 hours. shoot we drive it in 6. lets see. slower more expensive less convenient. three great reason to hop on. now if you dont have a vehicle thats another story. see thats what i mean! i remember being on the last trip of the last passenger train to go through my hometown on the d&h lines. my brother was a babe in arms so thatd make it - late 60s i guess. 24 hours is pretty excessive. i wouldnt mind if it took a bit longer than 6 hours - say 10 or even 12 - because the hassles still less than driving. as long as the price is right. it costs a bit to go to london on the train - equivalent of about $130 for a saver fare round-trip last i did it ive seen specials for 19 quid - but as the rides less than 3 hours and theres a complete lack of aggravation involved with the 5 hour drive first on the motorway then into the city. get there early and you can even get a seat with a table. and some trains even have wireless internet now! id take the train to ny all the time if we had the same service in the us. heck id take it anywhere which is what we do here. off to york tomorrow. im not sure that govt subsidies is the way to go though - down that path lies socialism which while not evil isnt the way *i* want our country to go. why cant amtrack make a profit on their own jmc .

well craig you might be right to blame bush if bush had command of the ng. however the ng is commanded by the governors of the state where the ng is posted. in this case the pentagon had ordered the ng to iraq. further the reason why things didnt move faster is not lack of leadership but duplicity of leadership. if the mayor of no had his orders followed the levees may have been reinforced. also all leadership appears to have had no plan. no plan to evacuate those without transport no plan to force people to follow the evac orders no plan to have the navy on station within hours i could go on. where does that fall on fema on local government state government ng leadership military leadership etc. ultimately there may be a conflict in how legal it is to order military intervention on a national level into a crisis on a state level. -- max give a man a match and he is warm for a short while. light him on fire and he is warm for the rest of his life. just have to put labels on people dont you is that part of the contract when you become a registered republican im not a democrat or a leftie as you put it. anyone too far to the right is just as mis-informed as someone that is too far left. and yes bush could have done more! to day is friday ... got that friday ... the storm hit monday! ng and supplies got there today. once again today is friday. it does not take 4-5 days to get relief to a location outside the u.s. so why did it take that long inside the u.s. i can tell you ... lack of leadership. i cant believe you are actually defending his leadership in this situation. perhaps if you were there or had family there you would feel differently. but then that would require you and jon to think of someone else other than yourselves. what do you care ... your taxes are lower. in your minds bush can do no wrong correct again i say un-fricken-believable. craig c. .

group.com says... there is no spark retard there is a hundred posts that will warn you of getting a dealer to flash the pcm. this will and has cost about 50% of our horsepower. the engine wont run on less then 89 octane. the flash will retard your spark and you wont have a ping but your cruise will be searching for a gear on the highway because it wont maintain overdrive with so little horsepower. the dealer will not flash it back. anyway that is an easy fix but the real problem is all that heat under the hood. after the 6 years it is really taken a toll. 160thermostat is too cold in the winter is replacing my undersized radiator the real answer i kind of doubt a radiator is the answer/problem. my old 77 360 pinged like crazy. a jet change to one size bigger helped as much as anything else i had tried except taking 4 degrees off the timing and that made the truck really gutless on the low end and it was a slug anyway. what seemed to help more than anything was when i went to a colder plug. with the leaded premium they had then i could run a 180 stat advance the timing 2 degrees over stock and be totally ping free even taking about 1000 pounds of junk up i15 to los angeles in the summer. if it didnt ping then it wasnt going to. the only pinging it did after that was when it started eating intake gaskets. what a hassle that was. i did get pretty fast at changing them until i solved the problem once and for all with some horrible smelling gasket sealer stuff. might be worth a shot plugs are cheap you would probably have to order them though.. bdk .

stephen the mopar cc cleaner will not hurt a healthy engine and is not traumatic in any way but if you are not experiencing any probs why go to the expense some of the better fuel injector cleaners have the same chemicals in them that is in the mopar cc cleaner. the best fi cleaners imho are 1. mopar fi cleaner 2. chevron techron 3. valvoline syntech. in fact these are the only ones i would recommend. they are slightly more expensive that some other brands but they are better. i think tom l. will agree with this... lets see. mike mike simmons wrote been wrong many times! before. give the cc cleaner a shot and report back... just remember soak it as long as you can! is combustion chamber cleaner something i should apply to my truck engine every now and then even if it runs fine my 98 1500 has 135k miles on it right now. has no problems running; starts up fine and i still get about what i got in mpg when it was new. i use throttle body/carb cleaner and fuel system cleaner usually every other 3000 mile oil change but was wondering if the cc cleaner was something that could be done as well to keep things running optimally. or is cc cleaner a rather traumatic treatment to be used rarely when something seems to actually be wrong with the engine smh .

thanks tom. ill look for the cc cleaner tomorrow. im sure the dealer would have it but theyre a little off my beaten trail. hoping to maybe find it at autozone pep boys or oreilly. you need to get this from the dealership... i havent seen this in any aftermarket form and if it did exist id trust the stuff in the mopar can more. i dont usually say this but having used the stuff first-hand i know what it will do. the instructions you found are correct but id add one more step 8 change your spark plugs the cc cleaner will foul them pretty badly - and a set of plugs are cheap. amen! im not trying to schlep mopar stuff on the ng but this is the only product that ive known to really work as advertised... most of the other stuff out there is snake oil. mike .

this is about the lift pump and injector pump on my 03 ctd ho. i dont have a fp gauge installed as yet and i have 72 thousand miles so far. power isnt what it used to be but i can still haul a 5th wheel up the hill... just takes longer. if the lp is shot or going the ip is soon to follow as far as ive read. two questions come up. first if the lp is shot how long till the ip goes out depends on driving habits i drive 40 miles to work mostly freeway a couple of good grades same on the way home. i tow 7500# once a month or so. does the ip go out within a few miles days weeks unpredictable second question is a bit more involved. if i take a dead ctd to the dealer and they find the lp and ip dead which is warranteed here is why i ask... in the warranty book under fed emission warranty - heavy duty truck it states a heavy duty hd truck has a rating of 10000lbs gvw and an m in the 4th position of the truck id number vin i assume or a 5 6 7 or w in the 8th position. mine has neither. my window sticker saved it states that this truck is a heavy duty truck as do the tailgate badging. whats up with that is it a hd or not under fed emission warrantee the electronic fuel injection system is covered to 5 years/100000 miles. what defines the system is it from fuel cap to injector or from ip to injector what is covered under ca emission warranty if this truck was originally sold in or ca sold no ho ctds in 03 then purchased used in ca. in the dc 7/100 warranty the ip and injectors are covered but it doesnt seem to include the lp. so now a third question. if my ctd dies and i tow it home and replace the lp myself then tow it to the dealer will they cover the dead ip -- fmb only one b in fmb cindy slither home .

had run a compression check and all cyls were 133 or above; wouldnt a good comp check pretty much rule out rings valves or gasket theres no pretty much yes. theres still a whole host of things that could be wrong... the combustion chamber could be carboned up... it could be a weak fuel pump... it could be a failing cam position sensor... it could be... you see where im going. do the combustion chamber cleaning. if no good and for your peace of mind swap the injectors again put a little dab of paint or something on #5 cause its easier to reach before removing it just to be sure you get them swapped - its easy enough to do. doubtful it will change anything but what the hell... beyond that i think you need to get it to someone with more advanced diagnostic equipment. i havent followed the thread with the intensity that i should have but iirc the misfire code is the same cylinder each time right if so the injector swap if done properly ;^ should eliminate that possibility. i would think that if the code was persistent to one specific cylinder it is likely not a cam sensor or fuel pump since they are common to all the cylinders and would probably generate a random cylinder code... but hey i been wrong many times! before. give the cc cleaner a shot and report back... just remember soak it as long as you can! mike .

mikesim@yhti.net writes before i would do anything else i would try cleaning the combustion chambers with mopar combustion chamber cleaner. i have seen several times where excess carbon builds up in the combustion chamber and valves and allows the engine to run lean enough for the pcm to pickup a cylinder misfire code. this is a cheap solution if it works. just follow the directions on the can and leave it soak for as long as possible. i think the directions say a minimum of two hours longer is better and overnite is ideal. then run the s**t out of it to blow the carbon out. it will smoke like the dickens so dont do this in an enclosed area. if this doesnt work then you probably have no recourse but to see a dealer. explain to the service advisor/service manager what you have done in detail and ask that he put his best driveability tech on the job. good luck! mike thanks mike & tom. so from what i think i hear you saying is this is unlikely to be an injector problem i ask because im having nightmares about the injector swap we did several months back thinking now of the possibility i might have accidently put the original injectors right back into the same holes 5 & 7 rather than swap them. if based on symptoms occuring at low rpm only theres still a chance of this being an injector problem say so and ill try that. i had another guy try to tell me it could be a #7 cylinder problem and suggested a possible ring valve or head gasket problem. i mentioned we had run a compression check and all cyls were 133 or above; wouldnt a good comp check pretty much rule out rings valves or gasket theres no foreign fluids in either the oil or water. thanks .

the verdict is in... i didnt buy the 5th wheel but did pick up a 25 travel trailer at 4400 lbs dry. we loaded it lightly- probably just barely over 5000 lbs. as some of the posters predicted its pretty slow up steep grades 7% at high altitude 7000+ feet; we drop down to about 35 mph. but there are turnouts so we can get out of other peoples way and- whats the hurry where the grade is not so steep it isnt hard to keep the speed up but you can only go so fast with a 25 trailer behind you anyway if there are any curves in the road. i did follow macs advice and got a weight distribution hitch which seems to steady things quite a bit. on the other hand we are beginning to look longingly at a 2500 with the cummins which might be nice for added confidence on cross-country trips and would open things up in the future for a larger rv. thanks again to all who responded... .
