Good to see

Q: mike simmons wrote i think what brent was saying in a nutshell is that a good service relationship is a two-way street. youre absolutely right about that. more than once ive seen someone go into a service department demanding his vehicle get immediate attention over everyone else. first thing i do when buying a new truck is establish a good relationship with at least one person in the service department. never failed to pay off somewhere down the line. jerry .

i have been reading a couple of your posts about dealership and shit all i can say is that my hat is off to the dealership mechanics most of the time they do receive great training and are very helpful. i have never had warranty work mainly because i keep my truck maintained. i did take my older dakota to get the transmission overhauled it was costly but the truck ran great and is still lasting. i dont care to pay the money as long as it for good quality work. keep up the good work brent. john in a simple nutshell i will try to explain the antics of a dealership service department. i can not explain poor dealerships with questionable techncians this is for you to determine. i simply hope my explanation helps you understand why a dealer does what it does. a dealer is monitored by the manufacturer as to how many repairs it does. if a dealer does one particular repair more than other dealers of the same size and zone then a restriction is placed on them for that repair. this is not right but it happens. this can result in a service manager instructing their technicians not to recognize that particular problem to eliminate the restrictions. i would hope that any dealer would ignore these restrictions if the repairs pertained to safety. as many have suggested a dealer will not recognize a problem with the vehicle until it is out of warranty. now you know why. your problem is with chrysler not the dealer. as for an independant repair shop charging less; bullcrap. as a customer you simply picked up the phone and found a shop that charges less per hour. what sense does it make if an independant charges less per hour but charges you more hours because they are not familiar with the vehicle flat rate is a guideline - not a law. a dealership may charge more per hour but charge less hours since they can diagnose the vehicle quicker. this is easy to understand since they are more familiar with that vehicle and its common fallacies. this also does not account for the thousands of dollars per month that a dealer spends on special tools to peform the repairs quicker and more precisely. one individual suggested they had been in a dealer and saw a large amount of dust on the special tools. he could not be more correct. not every tool is used every day what tools are used is determined by the failure rate of specific vehicles. perhaps this individual should spend more attention on their shop than the dealers. one thing to remember is this; unlike an independent a dealer has the right to not use a special tool because at least they have it if they need it. brent master ase and gold certified chrysler technician .

thanks for the info will keep it mind though we dont have many 4x2 customers in this area. keep in mind that longer springs do not dictate a stiffer ride it is simply the spring rate of the steel used the number of coils per inch and quality of the manufacturer that dictates the ride quality. you obviously made the right choice. brent master ase and gold certified chrysler technician .

jmc wrote its getting to be about time to replace my 4x4 dakotas stock tires. they still have a bit of tread on them but they dont grip these slick english roads well. i do have ways of getting tires out here provided i can find the type i want. the truck is a 4.7litre 4x4 club cab 2001 if that matters. i need tires that stick to wet roads well. truck is mostly used on roads sometimes bad and highways but is occassionally taken off-road as well. i dont have unlimited funds but ill dig into my pockets for good tires thatll last a while. a long time ago bfg ats i think. been out here too long! were recommended to me. i was told they were a bit noisy but were good on the road and lasted a long time. is this still a good recommendation appreciate any advice. and hello michele i was thinking i was the only gal here im a relative newbie though. a while back i replaced my stock tires with michelin ltx m/s. they are a little pricey but i expect them to last at least 60k miles maybe as long as 80k. i am very happy with them. for rain dry pavement mountains roads high speed highway muddy fire roads ice/snow you name they have been an excellent tire. i highly recommend them. -- .bob 1997 hd fxdwg - turbocharged! 2001 dodge dakota qc 5.9/4x4/3.92 1966 mustang coupe - daily driver 1966 ffr cobra - ongoing project did you get the cobra out of paint yet -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

i am under the impression that mechanics work for $x per hour + benefits. if this is true what difference does it make if it is warranty work or not if it isnt true and mechanics get paid by the job at different rates for warranty work vs after warranty work i suggest to the mechanics to find a different employer or negotiate a different contract. hank .

its good to see many of the older group members come forth after my posting. as for nosey who is creeped out by my dragon reference it is simply because i own a suzuki intruder 1400cc with a custom dragon paint job on the tank. you can question my certifications and abilities all you want that is your right and i take no offense. i posted about my webtv use because computer users seem to think they are superior for some reason and the flamers lead off with it when they have no real response to the issue at hand. as to nathan collier; yes you have a right to have every squeak and rattle repaired under warranty that is what it is there for. do not throw how much you paid for the vehicle in the service departments face. you dont think a dealership knows how much the vehicle goes for it was your choice to spend that much money on a vehicle not the dealerships. if you feel you paid too much for a squeaky vehicle then you are the sucker. judging by the post you are a class one warranty king. just remember that a great portion of new vehicle cost is because of warranty funding. the more you bitch the more it costs. if you feel you can build a perfect vehicle than by all means inform the engineers. nathan you are right. you are not there to make friends in the service department. you are simply the first to whine when your transmission fails 300 miles after the service contract expires. this makes you a warranty king. why should the dealership bend over backwards to care for that transmission when you have not spent a cent in that department; or maybe you are one of those yuppies that have more money than smarts so you trade when the warranty expires. i would be proud of you this would allow people like me to buy the vehicle used since you suffered the $3k+ depreciation as it drove off the lot the first day. brent master ase and gold certified chrysler technician hmmm you looking for a job as a service manager glenn beasley 26 yr chrysler tech master ase and gold certified chrysler technician .

i want to do a flush of my transmission fluid. but i have in my lifetime twisted one too many transmission lines when i attempt to remove it. i own the right tools flare nut wrenches but i somehow ended up kinking the line once... or twice... i dont want to do it again. i only do this once in a blue moon so i cant always remember how to do it. do you a keep the inner nut stationary and then move the outer nut doesnt seem right if by inner nut you mean the fitting that is screwed into the case yes b keep the large outer nut stationary and then try to twist the smaller inner nut seems more right nope c do some combination of the above to un-jam the double nut so that it turns freely that is first losen the big nut then losen the smaller nut so that you can eventually spin both. actually seems right outer nut is probably corroded to the line soak it with pb blaster or similar and let it sit overnight first oh and which one is the return line on a 46re whenever the odds are 50/50 i always get it wrong. if i ask it is usually easier. the one that goes to the rear fitting on the 46re thanks for the help. .

moparman wrote im just full of questions this week actually found time and enough dry air to wash and wax the truck yesterday winter in england is long days of moderate cold and depressing drippy days. im noticing that theres a lot of inclusions in my paint which i previously removed with a kind of clay. it worked really well. so well my current clay is rather jaggy and will probably scratch if i try to use it again. first question is clay the best way for me to remove the inclusions or is there something better i did buy a german-made liquid wax called mer i think which said itd pull that stuff out but only pulled something less than half of what i can feel. im not sure i like it. since i spent all that time washing/waxing it of course is misty today and the mer isnt beading up properly. if itd stop misting for a bit id try another coat... second question if clay is the best way whats a recommended brand and where can i get it im going back to the us on a business trip this spring and this is on my list of things to buy. third question what do you consider to be a high-quality wax that can help protect my truck from this rather hostile environment even if i was to wash it every day itd be constantly dirty. they grit here nearly every night in the winter because if its actually clear at night it frosts so hard the roads are icy. so even on dry days the roads can be damp and throw up grit which does have salt. and on wet days the roads are wet and throw up grit and mud. jodi i dont understand what an inclusion is if its like a sap like substance i use wd-40. wd-40 is like the aspirin of the automotive world. sap tar grit whathaveyou. when you run your fingers on a freshly washed and waxed truck and it isnt completely smooth. even my hoods starting to feel more like sandpaper. looks good but doesnt feel so good. after the clay job i did before prolly close to two years ago felt like new. jmc .

to phil indablank. you asked how much more they want. you forget or do not understand that the service department and technicians received 0$ of the $44k spent on the purchase of the vehicle. how does this help the technician put food on the table the same as you need to a dealership monitors each department partssales and service as separate entities. if one fails the rest are sure to follow. warranty pays crap and can not sustain a service department. they are asking for your maintenance work as well as the warranty. if the service department wants my maintenance work as well then they need to far more reasonable in their rates and be willing to eat the cost at least labor when they screw up. after all are they not specialized in recognizing early problems on that particular vehicle i would say not always and even then they seem not to see these early failures until after the warranty expires. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .
