Generic oil seal installation tool vs. Dodge tool #6635 question

From : ed h

Q: i should also have mentioned that when i have pressed oil seals into other engines i have used sockets or other items as spacers but i had the luxury of time to complete the repair. i would like to perform this job in one weekend which should be ample as long as im not chasing down tools im preparing to replace the timing chain on my 99 dodge ram 5.9 gas engine which also means replacing the front crankshaft oil seal. i have a generic oil seal installation tool kit that looks like it will work but the depth of the various size disks is only about 1/4 inch. the service manual calls for dodge special tool 6635 with a depth that looks to be about 2 inches and the manual says to use the vibration dampener bolt in conjunction with the special tool to draw the seal into position. i have not started to remove parts yet so i dont know if i should use the special tool or if i can use my generic set with either a shorter bolt or with the vibration dampener as a spacer in conjuction with the stock bolt. i realize that the depth of the special tool will provide a more square seating provided the depth of the hole in the timing chain cover is greater than the depth of my generic set. any thoughts regarding whether i should buy the special tool would be appreciated. .

ok let me ask this not looking for an exact answer 1550 sq single story 4 bed 12 celing in main rooms 8 - 10 in rest r-11 in the wall r-24 in the ceiling low e dual pain windows with additional window film to reduce as much heat gain as possible. 3 ton unit does this sound ok mind you i maybe a little off on some of the above figure but it is a 3 ton for sure. down in az i dunno... seems a little on the low-side to me. i had a 3-ton unit in a 900 sq.ft. ranch all 8ft. ceilings with approximately the same insulation... not a lot of glass zero southern exposure here in nj - and it was fine. to compare... my shop is approx. 2000 sq.ft. 14 ceilings... r-19 in the walls r-30 in the ceilings... white roof light-colored exterior really makes a difference in the heat gain and insulated doors only 1 window in the place. its got a 5-ton unit. thats probably a little much but we did it for the quick recovery time when a bay gets opened and a vehicle moved in/out. i think when i did the initial calculations i came up with a total heat gain of approx. 36000 btus 3 tons. but - im certainly no expert... thats why id rely on the calculations instead holy smokes! 3 ton in 900 sq/ft are you living in a green house all windows i am running a 1-1/2 ton in my 900+ sq/ft ranch and it is a bit too large. house was built in 52 poor insulation. i have a 1-1/2 ton ac in the shop too it is a tad over 900 sq/ft too 9 foot ceilings and it is too large too insulated about the same as the house! i would agree with the calc on the shop but probably would have stopped at 4 tons instead of 5 ton. once the building is cooled down even when you open a garage door it dont take long to cool it back down with a slightly oversized unit. greg .
