Gear Ratios

From : tmills65

Q: i am trying to figure out which gear ratio a 96 ram 1500 4x4 has. i know there was only a few options from the factory but this truck is new to me bought used. is there a tag on the diff or something i can look at without popping the rear cover i know if i put the truck on jacks and the tranny in neutral i can figure it out by counting the number of drive shaft rotations it takes to turn the rear wheel on full turn but maybe there is something easier. thanks jack up the rear. put a piece of white tape on the wheel and turn the drive shaft until the tire makes one revolution. the result will be the gear ratio. itll get ya close enough to the ones offered out there. -- moparman---remove clothes to reply --scud coordinates 32.61204 north 96.92993 west-- .

i know this is a subject that has probably been beaten to death here i am new so please forgive me. i have a 92 2500 4x4 with a receintly rebuilt 3 years ago jasper trans. about a year ago we had the od stop working on the highway i pulled over and replaced the throttle position switch had lunch.. and i had od again for about 1/2 hour and it went away again. the transmission to date works fine when cold or till i drive a few miles then i loose the od till she gets cold again. the engine temp gauge never shows hot and i have also just changed the fan clutch. i called jasper who told me it was either a speed sensor or tempature sensor. since i had previously changed the speed sensor and my speedometer is working fine i ruled that out. i have to assume the tempature sensor he refers to is the one attached to the cooling line under the transmission. how can i prove a bad tempature switch i am open to other ideas or tests. guys i would love some help thanks doug crall dcrall@ccjax.com .

moparman wrote am thinking about getting a pickup truck because one son could use some help. he is a stone mason but no drivers license for a while dont ask. i can help him haul stuff. but i am also thinking of using truck to either pull a tt or even mount a truck camper. this would be a second vehicle and will be older not a lot a $$ to spend. i know there are going to be a variety of options but figure the approximately 900 years total experience in the group should give me some ideas. tia lou you are right about one thing. there are allot of old farts with lots of advise. im kinda worried one of them didnt pick up on your problem and email you before you thought of it. remember some of these old farts ideas will stink. if they mention anything other than mopar/dodge products then they obviously donut know what they are talking about. just remember one thing. a. dodge 2. ram iii. heavy duty d. 2500/3500 five. ho turbo d babee. thats all ya need to yank whatever wherever and eat fords up while doing it. you bever will get the damn smile off your face. -- moparman---remove clothes to reply --scud coordinates 32.61204 north 96.92993 west-- yeah dodge...or ford....or chevy....or gmc.....whatever youre into will be fine. just think heavy duty. 3/4 or 1 ton. bigger is always better when youre talking pulling or hauling. duel rear wheels would be nice depending on the size of the camper and type. .

use the durango & tow a trailer. it would be wise to install a trans cooler if you do not have on. do not tow in overdrive .

i have been looking around and considering a cold air box since the air boxes on the cummins are restrictive that is what everyone says right. i came across this part that is approximately 4 in diameter and is sold as a modification to the current air box. you cut a 4 hole in the bottom of the current box and the hard plastic tube fits into the hole and the other end is done near the front bumper; thus cold air is rushed into the air box. the company i saw this advertised wanted $129 for this simple modification. well i spent $4 at lowes for a 10 foot 4 diameter piece of tubing that looks exactly like that of the $129 part. i put that in and ran the other end down to the front bumper. not sure if it is improving anything maybe dropping my egts a little but it is too early to tell. next im considering a full flow through muffler but i cant make one of those... bob 2003 r3500 for your muffler you may want to look at genos garage they have a muffler elimination kit avail for the dodge trucks. www.genosgarage.com/products.aspdept=90 -- ---------------------------- -chris 05 ctd 06 liberty crd real trucks dont need spark plugs. .

i am trying to figure out which gear ratio a 96 ram 1500 4x4 has. i know there was only a few options from the factory but this truck is new to me bought used. if you have the stock 245/75r16 tires running 60mph in your transmissions 11 gear thats 3rd gear if you have an automatic o/d locked out or 4th if you have a 5spd manual a 3.55 ratio will turn 2350rpm while 3.92 will turn 2600rpm. these were the only two ratios available for a 4x4 in that year. if you have the 265/75r16 tires those engine rpms will drop to 2260 for a 3.55 ratio and 2500 for a 3.92 ratio. if you have some other size tire post that back here with your rpm at 60mph. .
