tom lawrence no pump in the tank... fuel is pulled from the tank by the lift pump electrically driven on a 95 model i think its camshaft driven. billy 1995 ram 2500 4x4 cumins and cummins has two ms .

how can i tell if it is a retrofit or a gas pump that is what i feared someone placed a gas rig pump in the tank i dont know why but it is the same pump that is in my dakota with the same flaws. wow. well if it makes you feel any better the 05 and up rams with cummins went back to an in-tank pump and any 94 and up trucks that go into the shop for lift pump replacement get retro-fitted with the in-tank pump. its not that its a bad idea but if its really a gasoline fuel pump in the tank its going to put out about 45psi of pressure which the diesel lift pump was never designed to take. .

tom lawrence wrote my trailer power at the 7-prong plug is always hot. it should only be on when the engine is running. under the hood on the drivers side usa there is a box with fuses and relays where the main power distribution is. there is a fuse marked trailer power and if i pull that the trailer power goes dead. there is also a relay marked trailer power and if i pull that the trailer still has power. it should go on with the engine to charge the trailer batteries and go off when the engine is shut down to prevent draining the truck batteries when the trailer in this case a slide-in camper is parked. believe it or not thats the way it comes wired from the factory. the relay is for the running lights and is triggered by the headlamp switch. its powered off the same fuse fuse #8 40a that supplies constant power to the 7-pin connector but split at a connector inside the pdc. i agree its a bad design - i guess the thinking is that when you park youd disconnect the trailer power. if you want it to operate the way you state switched by the ignition find ther red/orange wire leaving the pdc double-check that youve got the right wire with a voltmeter then pull the fuse and make sure you lose voltage on the wire and cut it. put a 30a relay get it with a corresponding relay socket - makes wiring much easier inline with the hot side going to terminal 30 of the relay and the downstream side going to terminal #87. ground terminal 85 and run terminal #86 to something thats hot with the ignition on. you can run a wire into the cab and tap into the ignition switch wiring or you can tap into a hot only when ignition on relay in the pdc. the fuel pump output is a good choice - remember youre only powering the electromagnet in the relay - a very low current draw. tom thanks a lot! that sounds like exactly the information i need! i was planning to do a relay thing but you have pointed me in the right direction. i will do some tests to verify i have the right wire and that i find one that goes on and off with the key. well if it was a trailer i might or might not disconnect when parked but this is a camper slide-in so there is no reason to disconnect except of course to remedy the bad design in wiring. charles .

i fixed my fuel guage today there is a elec pump in the tank & the lift pump on the engine no pump in the tank... fuel is pulled from the tank by the lift pump electrically driven on the rear drivers side of the engine then fed to the high-pressure injection pump gear-driven by the engine - looks like a miniature inline-6 engine with 6 fuel lines coming out of it which feeds the injectors. and cummins has two ms .

that is what i feared someone placed a gas rig pump in the tank i dont know why but it is the same pump that is in my dakota with the same flaws. the screws had popped out of the slides and it has a undersize filter on bottom with a 12 volt pump in the center. i fixed the screws and locked it in positioned so it will just touch bottom of empty tank and i put a press nut on the new sending unit to keep the pivot point from getting slack. i dont think this was original equipment. but the truck runs good so i decided to leave it alone. -- billy 1995 ram 2500 4x4 cummins .

is there a way to tell the retrofit pump from a gas pump -- billy 1995 ram 2500 4x4 cummins .

is there a way to tell the retrofit pump from a gas pump easiest way would be to hook a fuel pressure gauge to the fuel supply line to the lift pump. i doubt this was done as an authorized repair because 1 the in-tank pump has only been in use for less than a year and 2 they would have removed the engine-mounted lift pump at the time of conversion. .
