Fuel pressure bleed-off...

From : jacob suter

Q: recently my 99 1500 w/ 318 started losing fuel pressure when its sat more than a couple hours. overnight it generally takes a couple cranks on the key to get it running. fuel pressure when running is fine. bleeds down to 20 psi within 15 minutes and zero within an hour. logic dictates this is probably a bad injector or a leak somewhere back toward the tank. my ford had a 2 rubber hose between the top of the tank and the pump which rotted out after about 10 years leaving me with a screaming fuel pump no fuel pressure and a really bad mood - id rather avoid this situation again. my haynes book doesnt offer any good pictures of this piece - would a 99 1500 cc swb 318 2wd have rubber hose inside the tank js .

i didnt realize that he would go public with it but.... http//cgi.ebay.com/ws/ebayisapi.dllviewitem&item=2570041996&category=11751 denny im betting there are a couple of folks here that have bids on it already. mac is probably thinking about selling his trailer. im sure hes pissed off at red for not offering it to him first. especially since he hauled it up to him last year. sorry bro but....bfg t-bone im sure would much rather continue on as he has and do things by hand. g budd the old grouchy fart probably uses a pair of vise grips or a stillsonsp wrench. bfb roy .

this is probably not an injector as you made no mention of an engine miss on start up. when an injector bleeds down the few drops of fuel in that cyl usually takes a few revolutions to clear out and the cyl to start firing. the problem is probably the check valve built onto the fuel pump. you will need to replace the pump to get this. there is a hose in the tank under the pump. when this develops a leak you will get an engine that runs good when the tank is full but develops running problems when the level of the gas drops below the bad spot on the hose. denny recently my 99 1500 w/ 318 started losing fuel pressure when its sat more than a couple hours. overnight it generally takes a couple cranks on the key to get it running. fuel pressure when running is fine. bleeds down to 20 psi within 15 minutes and zero within an hour. logic dictates this is probably a bad injector or a leak somewhere back toward the tank. my ford had a 2 rubber hose between the top of the tank and the pump which rotted out after about 10 years leaving me with a screaming fuel pump no fuel pressure and a really bad mood - id rather avoid this situation again. my haynes book doesnt offer any good pictures of this piece - would a 99 1500 cc swb 318 2wd have rubber hose inside the tank js .

dont overlook the short rubber hose that connects the actual pump to the metal tubes...........usually those have the el-cheapo squeeze-lock clamps on each end of the hose and ive seen the hose spring a leak too this is probably not an injector as you made no mention of an engine miss on start up. when an injector bleeds down the few drops of fuel in that cyl usually takes a few revolutions to clear out and the cyl to start firing. the problem is probably the check valve built onto the fuel pump. you will need to replace the pump to get this. there is a hose in the tank under the pump. when this develops a leak you will get an engine that runs good when the tank is full but develops running problems when the level of the gas drops below the bad spot on the hose. denny recently my 99 1500 w/ 318 started losing fuel pressure when its sat more than a couple hours. overnight it generally takes a couple cranks on the key to get it running. fuel pressure when running is fine. bleeds down to 20 psi within 15 minutes and zero within an hour. logic dictates this is probably a bad injector or a leak somewhere back toward the tank. my ford had a 2 rubber hose between the top of the tank and the pump which rotted out after about 10 years leaving me with a screaming fuel pump no fuel pressure and a really bad mood - id rather avoid this situation again. my haynes book doesnt offer any good pictures of this piece - would a 99 1500 cc swb 318 2wd have rubber hose inside the tank js .

ok youre onto something with a rough startup - on cold start it stumbles for 15 seconds before it gets a solid idle. it often lets off a good *knock* on warm start like a 2-5 minute shutdown. itll also get a very gassy smell in the crankcase especially if the previous start didnt warm the engine much this has happened since it was pretty new too. i guess ill look into fuel injector diagnostics tomorrow. oh well at least it doesnt involve removing the bed or dropping the tank... yet... | js denny wrote this is probably not an injector as you made no mention of an engine miss on start up. when an injector bleeds down the few drops of fuel in that cyl usually takes a few revolutions to clear out and the cyl to start firing. the problem is probably the check valve built onto the fuel pump. you will need to replace the pump to get this. there is a hose in the tank under the pump. when this develops a leak you will get an engine that runs good when the tank is full but develops running problems when the level of the gas drops below the bad spot on the hose. denny recently my 99 1500 w/ 318 started losing fuel pressure when its sat more than a couple hours. overnight it generally takes a couple cranks on the key to get it running. fuel pressure when running is fine. bleeds down to 20 psi within 15 minutes and zero within an hour. logic dictates this is probably a bad injector or a leak somewhere back toward the tank. my ford had a 2 rubber hose between the top of the tank and the pump which rotted out after about 10 years leaving me with a screaming fuel pump no fuel pressure and a really bad mood - id rather avoid this situation again. my haynes book doesnt offer any good pictures of this piece - would a 99 1500 cc swb 318 2wd have rubber hose inside the tank js .
