Fuel Filter Question

Q: i just bought a 2002 2500 with the turbo diesel it has no owners manual with it. i want to change the fuel filter and want to know if you are suppose to fill the filter with fuel and then put it on or can you put it on empty and it will then fill when cranking the engine and purge itself of any air thanks .
