Q: rod bearings will get me by. our son is in college and our daughter will be going next year. were far from starving but money is going to get nothing but tighter for the next few years. ken . 222 339538 47058347$0$18981$4c368faf@roadrunner.com my 97 dakota just started getting some rod clatter and the oil pressure goes to near 0 at idle. approx. 202500 miles on it. 3.9 v-6 auto trans. some rust on box. fix or replace jasper wants almost $2400 for a reman. ill also mention that we now have 4 drivers sharing 2 cars. daughters cars engine seized in july and ive yet to fix or replace it. life is still damn good the logistics are getting tricky. ken does this ole truck have any sentimental value assuming 2wd this truck is about $2000 in fair condition after you put the motor in. excellent condition is about $3000. youd have to drive this truck for several years with no other major problems to get your money out of it. maybe its time to put the ole beast to rest..... or maybe find a boneyard motor for $5-700 its a gamble on getting a good one but its another option to look at.. denny .

@corp.super.com after draining the oil and removing the oil filter i saw that the filter didnt have any oil in it. what would cause this i use wix filters. ken its either drainback doubtful or oil pump is out likely. with the angle the oil filter is at in relation to the block it would seem that drainback would be near impossible. is there a check valve before the oil gets into the filter not sure. where would i look dont even bother! the fact youve got noise in the lower end would lead any reasonable mechanic to pull the oil pan and change out the oil pump. unless of course youd rather blow the sumbitch up first. truck is out of service. i wish it was as simple as pulling the oil pan and changing the pump. as was noted earlier in the thread the pan wont come of this truck with the engine still in the truck even with the engine lifted. investigating the possibilities available. this truck may turn into a donor for a different truck. i hope not. ken .

nathan w. collier wrote insignificant since neither ford or chevy builds a real diesel truck. ;- true but cummins new 6.7l has had a good share of issues. mostly with the new emissions system. lots of turbos replaced and i know of two complete engine failures. their flash update in june seems to have alleviated most of the problems but some have said its only a temporary fix. i sure hope cummins solves the problems as i own a 2007 6.7l ram. only have 1100 miles on it and no troubles. .

as you may or may not recall some months back even further back i posted about the tranny in my 96 2500 4x4 cummins acting up. it was an intermittent problem which tells me its an electrical problem. why when a mechanical thing breaks it stays broken. electrical components can be temperamental work and not work all in the same day. when i would take it in to a place the tranny would work fine. recently one place with a good rep wanted to rebuild it with a life time warranty for $2700. i went back to a place that i took it to earlier this year. he too enjoys a great rep and isnt a greed-hound. we took it for a spin and before we got a block away he said its not down shifting. its starting out in 3rd gear. next stop 2nd gear. it did it each time after a stop. he said the governor switch end solenoid were probably bad as the truck is searching for its gearing. when i described the problem originally on here and to him i said it felt like something inside it was applying the brakes. sometimes it would take off like a rocket other times slow without much power and the third way of not going anywhere then shooting off after it connected. in actuality it was normal taking off in second or trying to take off in third dropping down to its proper gear or down to 2nd then going. he replaced those two components serviced and im back on the road only $300 cheaper. on the bad side he said there was still a slight binding which he tracked down to the rear axle bearing going bad. im taking it in monday to place that has experience with it. the dana was a little too formidable for the tranny guy. hes done smaller ones but said the truck place would be better suited for the bigger heavier stuff. in summary the way it felt to me was that something was binding and not allowing the tranny to direct power from the engine properly. in truth it wasnt downshifting. simple enough. it sure didnt feel that downshifting was the problem as it didnt feel like i was taking off in high gear with the engine lugging. truck runs like new. not bad for 208000 miles. tranny was rebuilt at 122000 miles. john .

after a few commercials talking about the lifetime warranty on all chrysler vehicles i decided that was the incentive i need to trade up. i unloaded my truck cleaned it up and headed to the dealer with the intention of buying a 4x4 dually with the 6 speed manual. when i got there however i was informed that the lifetime warranty only applies to gasoline engine powered vehicles. .....to bad i was looking forward to another new truck. nothing wrong at all with the one i have although now that im towing heavy im wishing i had purchased a manual originally. -- nathan in montana http//concealedcarryforum.com http//1911talk.com http//hipowertalk.com http//glockcarry.com http//p99sw99.com http//ppstalk.com http//p7talk.com .

i was there recently with my 98 dakota 98k miles with serious body damage entire right side. in excellent condition it is worth about $6000 loaded sport v8. the body damage is $4000. i gave it to my son for graduation so he has sentimental value in it. he didnt want another vehicle either and was going to drive it as is but i felt bad about it. it was on the border of selling it as is or fix it. i decided to fix it. rear end was recently rebuilt $1300 for that little deal. all ball joints and upper control arm bushings replaced new rubber paint is not good but not bad either. all in all the truck probably has another 100k left to it if he can only keep it without wrecking it again. all these years and no body damage at all. i am a two parking spot user and take great pride in the way my vehicles look and drive. its not a door stop for the irresponsible. bottom line is it worth it to you with that many miles i would toss it and find another one like it. you can get a nice 2000 or newer with less than 100k for less than $5000. i did once drove it for 2 years wrecked it once repaired it then sold it for more than i paid for it. it can be done.
