FYI: MPG 99 ram 5.9L gas

From : mac davis

Q: we just got back from a 2000 mile weekend to washington and back... a few stats/opinions 99 ram qq 5.9l auto 3.55 gears 5000 lb 26 travel trailer average speed was 60 mph or whatever we could do uphill or whatever we felt would keep us from earning another speeding ticket.. we pulled some pretty good grades but what goes up must come down.. average mpg was about 8.4 but the main point was that we had 2 or 3 tanks wife still has paperwork in purse that were in the low 9s... all with oregon or washington gas.. the 2 or 3 tanks that were pretty much 100% calif. gas were all in the mid-7mpg range... 3 things we learned for sure on this trip affirmed that ca. gas is shitty were surprised at how strong the ram was on grades we know that we want to move up to a ctd but thought this trip would be miserable in a gasser and it was fine met red and hes a very nice guy that were looking forward to seeing on our next trip up that way... mac .

for comparison we have an 01 2500 ram 5.9 cummins 4.11 auto and pull a 30 fifth wheel. truck and trailer are loaded with tools and hobbies; we gross at 16100 with full tanks. towing mileage averages 12.5 mpg on a little over 10000 miles per year. youre doing ok with that 3.55 and you can buy a lot of gas normally for the difference in cost for a diesel which also adds another 500 pounds or so to the weight of your truck. rick we just got back from a 2000 mile weekend to washington and back... a few stats/opinions 99 ram qq 5.9l auto 3.55 gears 5000 lb 26 travel trailer average speed was 60 mph or whatever we could do uphill or whatever we felt would keep us from earning another speeding ticket.. we pulled some pretty good grades but what goes up must come down.. average mpg was about 8.4 but the main point was that we had 2 or 3 tanks wife still has paperwork in purse that were in the low 9s... all with oregon or washington gas.. the 2 or 3 tanks that were pretty much 100% calif. gas were all in the mid-7mpg range... 3 things we learned for sure on this trip affirmed that ca. gas is shitty were surprised at how strong the ram was on grades we know that we want to move up to a ctd but thought this trip would be miserable in a gasser and it was fine met red and hes a very nice guy that were looking forward to seeing on our next trip up that way... mac .

mac we just got back from a trip to eastern arizona and then over to san diego a total of about 1400 miles. i have a similar 2001 ram and pulled about 4500lbs. i averaged about 9.5mpg in arizona and 8.5mpg in california. i drove about 65 on flat highways. on very steep mountain grades the truck topped out at about 35mph in 2nd. most grades i could do 40-45 but dont like to wind up the rmps too high. is this about the same as your experience my tranny temp guage read about 200 on flats and about 225 up the steeper grades. was hoping to get it cooler but most tell me thats typical especially with arizona 105 temps over the weekend. mac davis wrote we just got back from a 2000 mile weekend to washington and back... a few stats/opinions 99 ram qq 5.9l auto 3.55 gears 5000 lb 26 travel trailer average speed was 60 mph or whatever we could do uphill or whatever we felt would keep us from earning another speeding ticket.. we pulled some pretty good grades but what goes up must come down.. average mpg was about 8.4 but the main point was that we had 2 or 3 tanks wife still has paperwork in purse that were in the low 9s... all with oregon or washington gas.. the 2 or 3 tanks that were pretty much 100% calif. gas were all in the mid-7mpg range... 3 things we learned for sure on this trip affirmed that ca. gas is shitty were surprised at how strong the ram was on grades we know that we want to move up to a ctd but thought this trip would be miserable in a gasser and it was fine met red and hes a very nice guy that were looking forward to seeing on our next trip up that way... mac .

mac davis wrote we went to synthetic oil right before the trip too... next step is to get the tranny serviced and go synthetic in that too.. my ram is a 2001 and chrysler states to use atf+4 fluid which is synthetic from what i understand. .
