Q: if you can hear the pump running when the engine is not getting enough fuel then the computer has nothing to do with it. you definitely have a problem somewhere with the pump and the only way to fix it will be to pull it out and look things over. you may also need to flush the tank while you are at it. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving it is obvious from what you said that you are not getting fuel to the injectors. when this happens verify that the fuel pump is getting power with a volt meter. if it is getting power can you hear it run if the engine is not turning over after a few seconds the power to the fuel pump is turned off by the computer as a safety measure. if you have no pressure to the fuel rail 1 no fuel in tank 2 bad pump 3 bad fuel pressure regulator dumps all fuel back to tank 4 plugged fuel filter 5 bad fuel pump relay 6 bad computer 7 rusty electrical connection or ground connection 8 water in the gas tank that will not go through the pump sock screen a code 12 is battery disconnected. you did this. if you do not want to pay to hope and poke parts at it you will have to be able to make a series of measurements during the time when it is not running. you can do it smart and take a some time to make measurements or pay lots of money and shotgun all the parts that might be the cause of the problem. both methods work eventually. thanks for the infoeveryone!. yes i did dis-connect the battery hence the code 12. i also replaced the relay to no avail. i went through all wires hoses etc and found nothing amiss. have not checked the regulator but the pump can be heard running even when the motor isnt getting enough fuel when i open the gascap and listen in. when it runs correctly the fuel sprays hard out of the rail too but i dont have a pressure tester to see how much is actually there but its night & day compared to when it runs rough. im hoping against the computer especially with less than 50k on it. i did buy bad gas 4 days ago and my truck died within 5 miles of leaving the pump. it was blowing white smoke pretty bad so i got to another gas station and bought more gas and put a bottle of iso ion the tank. within a half-hour everything was fine with no more problems until 2 days ago when i got more gasat a different station and i parked the truck for the night and went out the next day and the 10-mile b.s. started to happen but isnt going away now. maybe the water in the fuel messed up the pump module i cant prove i even got gas there because i never got a receipt for it never do but im going to from now on...especially in the winter! .
