Drivers hit by gauge-gumming gasoline Shell Oil stops pump sales

From : fmb

Q: just before the heavy-driving memorial day weekend shell oil has stopped the sale of gasoline at more than 500 of its stations in the south because of high levels of sulfur that can damage vehicle fuel gauges and make an empty tank appear full. http//www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5086367/ that just has to hurt the economy of the south. somebody must have missed some tank sampling penciled in results. the result is a percentage of stations that will take days to get back in service forcing drivers to other stations that may raise prices. i wonder if they are going to just drain flush and fill or if they are going to to have to chem clean. when its all clean they will fill it with decent gasoline oh nevermind its shell. -- fmb only one b in fmb .

on tue 1 jun 2004 findingking wrote shell has long used sulphur instead of lead to archive octane ratings. well...no. sulphur is not an octane booster and shell gasoline has always contained about the same amount of lead as other brands of gasoline declining through the years. sulphur is and has always been considered an impurity in gasoline the cause of sulphurous and sulphuric constituents of engine exhaust which in turn cause acid rain and its more recently been found to degrade the performance of engine exhaust emission control devices controlling other pollutants so its presence in motor fuels is being reduced by legislation. the european and japanese market has a great many ultra-clean common rail diesel engine powered vehicles that arent yet feasible in north america because of the relatively high sulphur content of north american fuels. ultralow-sulphur fuels arrive in canada by mandate in 05 in the usa by mandate in 06. -stern .

shell has long used sulphur instead of lead to archive octane ratings. they probably just used too much one time. i can remember it fouling plugs with a yellow foul back when i was racing in the 70s. on sun 30 may 2004 070332 -0600 nitpik bubba@mindspring.com wrote this also points out to some about which brand of gas is better .. the response being that most gas comes from the nearest refinery regardless of brand. just before the heavy-driving memorial day weekend shell oil has stopped the sale of gasoline at more than 500 of its stations in the south because of high levels of sulfur that can damage vehicle fuel gauges and make an empty tank appear full. http//www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5086367/ that just has to hurt the economy of the south. somebody must have missed some tank sampling penciled in results. the result is a percentage of stations that will take days to get back in service forcing drivers to other stations that may raise prices. i wonder if they are going to just drain flush and fill or if they are going to to have to chem clean. when its all clean they will fill it with decent gasoline oh nevermind its shell. -- fmb only one b in fmb .
