Dodging everything but the gas station

From : dicky

Q: i am at my wits end on this dodge truck i have. i need some tips from a carbourator or emissions specialist. i have an 85 dodge ram 50 pickup. the thing is getting terrible mileage and shooting gas out the tailpipe. one guy told me its running too rich which makes sense. it backfires around corners. one guy said thats the float sticking. that makes sense. im getting gas in my oil. nobody seems to know whats causing that. one guy said that could be caused by any number of things but couldnt tell me any. i tend to think all of this is caused by an emissions problem. this dodge has a 2.0 mitzubishi engine. by the way i put a rebuilt carb on a couple of months ago that i got from autozone. i didnt make any adjustments. i put it on the way the old one came off. is there anybody out there that might be able to point me toward the cure i would appreciate it. thanks. dicky .

thanks for the advice *cbhvac*. i had a feeling it was the catalytic converter. i took off the hoses and verified they werent clogged. is there an easy way to determine if the canister is clogged dicky .
