Dodge Ram running rich

From : timm

Q: i guess what im wondering is what controls the air/fuel mixture on a 96 dodge ram 1500 w/5.9l gas auto after driving about for about 40 miles this truck starts burning real rich. gas mileage is horrible. what would be the most likely cause the truck has new heads plugs cap rotor and wires. any of you techies care to take a guess my guess is the o2 sensor or a bad coil. no codes in the ecu except yesterday it indicated a rich mixture and a lean mixture code 51 & 52 i think. thanks in advance .......... timm please reply here and to knucklerider40@hotmail.com .

o2 sensor controls it after it warms up and goes into closed-loop mode is your thermostat working if it sticks open the ecm will never go into closed loop stays on a pre-set program and will cause this i guess what im wondering is what controls the air/fuel mixture on a 96 dodge ram 1500 w/5.9l gas auto after driving about for about 40 miles this truck starts burning real rich. gas mileage is horrible. what would be the most likely cause the truck has new heads plugs cap rotor and wires. any of you techies care to take a guess my guess is the o2 sensor or a bad coil. no codes in the ecu except yesterday it indicated a rich mixture and a lean mixture code 51 & 52 i think. thanks in advance .......... timm please reply here and to knucklerider40@hotmail.com .

thanks for the info yofuri ..... i suspect that the coolant killed it when my nephew overheated it and cracked the heads. strange thing though it didnt start screwing up right away it started messing up after 2000 miles. thanks again timm ........................ if your o2 sensor got a slug of silicone from spray lubricants or rtv while that work was being done its poisoned. rick -- my real e-mail address is yofuri@oakharbor.net gary glaenzer wrote o2 sensor controls it after it warms up and goes into closed-loop mode is your thermostat working if it sticks open the ecm will never go into closed loop stays on a pre-set program and will cause this i guess what im wondering is what controls the air/fuel mixture on a 96 dodge ram 1500 w/5.9l gas auto after driving about for about 40 miles this truck starts burning real rich. gas mileage is horrible. what would be the most likely cause the truck has new heads plugs cap rotor and wires. any of you techies care to take a guess my guess is the o2 sensor or a bad coil. no codes in the ecu except yesterday it indicated a rich mixture and a lean mixture code 51 & 52 i think. thanks in advance .......... timm please reply here and to knucklerider40@hotmail.com gary thanks for the info ...... i *thought* it was the o2 sensor that controls the mixture. this is on my wifes nephews truck ... he *was* having some overheating problems so i wonder if he took out the thermostat. ill ask him when he gets in tonight. again thanks timm ............ .
