Dodge GPS Question

Q: i care....its called population control and natural selection. sounds liek you need to be next. drugs booze speed teens jerks macho men bikers other fools these substances and people types -- in various combinations -- kill 44000 of u.s. citizens a year. its been like this for decades. but nothing substantive is ever done to reduce this carnage. because nobody cares. are you part of the problem --------- a deadly story we keep missing by peter j. woolley the washington post wednesday december 27 2006; a19 the non-story of 2006 was also the non-story of 2005. it is a non-story every year going back decades. yet the number of people who die in car crashes in the united states is staggering even if it is absent from the agenda of most public officials and largely ignored by the public. when all is said and done and the ball begins to drop on new years eve 44000 people give or take several hundred will have died in auto accidents this year. to put that number in perspective consider that o at the 2006 casualty rate of 800 soldiers per year the united states would have to be in iraq for more than 50 years to equal just one year of automobile deaths back home. o in any five-year period the total number of traffic deaths in the united states equals or exceeds the number of people who died in the horrific south asian tsunami in december 2004. u.s. traffic deaths amount to the equivalent of two tsunamis every 10 years. o according to the national safety council your chance of dying in an automobile crash is one in 84 over your lifetime. but your chances of winning the mega millions lottery are just one in 175 million. o if you laid out side by side 8-by-10 photos of all those killed in crashes this year the pictures would stretch more than five miles. o if you made a yearbook containing the photos of those killed this year putting 12 photos on each page it would have 3500 pages. if you wanted to limit your traffic-death yearbook to a manageable 400 pages youd either have to squeeze more than 100 photos onto each page or issue an eight-volume set. can you hear me now automobile deaths are the leading cause of death for children for teenagers and in fact for all people from age 3 to 33. yet this annual tragedy is not a cause celebre. opinion leaders largely ignore the ubiquitous massacre. no marches walkathons commemorative stamps or fundraising drives are organized. it is not brought up in the state of the union address. it is rarely the subject of public affairs shows. statistics arent updated daily in major papers or broadcasts. gruesome crashes are reported just one at a time each as if it might never happen again. little attention is paid to the aftermath safety measures taken or not taken the workings or non-workings of the justice system. these avoidable deaths as well as more than 2 million nonfatal dismemberments disfigurements and other injuries that go along with them have become part of the fabric of everyday life in the united states. elected officeholders naturally take the path of least resistance. they are well aware that significantly reducing deaths on the roads requires radical solutions in the form of regulation investment and enforcement. roads need to be made safer for example by extending guardrails and medians to every mile of busy highways. speeding and aggressive driving need to be much more rigorously controlled. trucks need to be separated from automobiles wherever possible. and cars need to be built slower and stronger. but every solution is readily opposed by someone manufacturers industrial unions truckers consumers taxpayers -- though all are potential victims themselves. the public is not to blame. it is hemmed in on every side by mind-numbing advertising and shouted stories of the moment. apparently no medium is willing to bludgeon people -- as they need to be -- with statistics and trends on the dangers facing them every time they set out in their automobiles. only if there is a public outcry will this situation get the attention due it. only when people fully realize the absurd and avoidable costs of the dangers that stalk them on the road -- and then demand governmental action in the form of forceful intervention and strict regulation -- will this become the story of the year as it should be. the writer is a professor of political science at fairleigh dickinson university and executive director of publicmind a public opinion research group there. http//www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/12/26/ar2006122600775.html ----- .

the problem is in the various states we allow people that do not know how to drive to teach others how to drive. every driver should have to pass a competent defensive driver training school test before being allowed on the highways and byways. they generally cost a $1000 or more but one will save one many times the cost of the school in lower insurance rates. i sent all of my children and grandchildren to the bob bondurant driving schools at major raceways at a cost of around $2000. none of them to date has ever been charged with a moving violation or ever been involved in a fender bender let alone had a serious accident.. the other problem is that we never or rarely test again after the initial license is given. .

thanks for the replies. i will report back shortly on my efforts. i am still thinking along the lines of some fuel gone bad. i dont think the fuel was bad out of the tank -- been fueling there for a while and never had issues and they seem to sell a lot. also the truck was running fine on the same fuel a while back but the truck was not being driven a lot so the same tank of fuel had been in the tank for several weeks. we got a bunch of wet and cold weather a few weeks ago starting soon before this started and i think the fuel just attracted the moisture. the bio in there is from a reputable dealer that most of the bio drivers here slc ut area use. the tank had been 100% full with dino diesel and then over time small 3 to 9 or 10 gallon fillups of various things some b100 in small amounts some b50 and some dino diesel were added as i was trying to keep the tank full to remove available surface area for condensation to happen and just because i like to keep the tank pretty full. the current bio % is probably between 10 and 30 right now. i have all the fueling receipts since purchase and should sit down and caluclate it - i am going to change the fuel filter and see what happens and report back. thanks chad .

you are not going to find the wiring diagrams unless you can get your hands on a factory manual. this is something that you will have to figure out on your own using a digital multi meter. as well as a little cutting and splicing of wires. like i said in my original post this is not something i would recommend i would call some of your local car audio shops see if any of them have done it successfully and see if they will provide you the info if they documented it. on average something like this would take us at the shop i worked at hours to find the wire combinations before we could go from there. i wish you the best of luck but as i dont have your vehicle in front of me i cant provide anymore then i have. kind of getting off track i would like to know how to do it or where to get wiring diagrams if possible. i know it may not be legal to use when your moving...thanks for any input on fri 29 dec 2006 020411 gmt fmb fmbb@sbcglobal.net wrote its not illegal to have it up front it is illegal for the driver to watch it. slight difference but as we know a cop could be an ass any time they wanted too. kinda depends on what state you may be in i would say. as ca plainly states; 27602. a a person may not drive a motor vehicle if a television receiver a video monitor or a television or video screen or any other similar means of visually displaying a television broadcast or video signal that produces entertainment or business applications is operating and is located in the motor vehicle at any point forward of the back of the drivers seat or is operating and visible to the driver while driving the motor vehicle. it goes on to except a few items and you can see it at http//www.dmv.ca.gov/pubs/vctop/d12/vc27602.htm fmb north mexico .

mike hunter wrote truckers are fall guys as well. drive any major highway at 3 pm then drive the same highway at 3 am when the traffic is mostly trucks and you will be amazed at the difference than when it was filled with cars. i always travel at night when driving great distances for that reason. depends on the highways. i avoid highways with heavy trucker traffic. these big rig drivers too often tailgate at high speeds deliberatly shove me out of their way when they feel like it and are just downright rude as if theyre bigger so get out of their way. why do these idiots try to pass another trucker up a steep grade when they simply cant instead they tie up traffic with their bigger than everyone else attitude. .

as a follow up to my other post something that you want to look at before you start cutting wires and such. see if the unit up front has an aux or secondary video input. if it does that is where you want to run the video from the rear into. on the rear unit will should have 2 or 3 wires that are your video source one will be a ground and one a positive signal if you can locate and isolate these you can use one half of an rca cable to run the signal rear to front. hope all this helps and answers your question got a dodge megacab with built in gps display. has video in back for passengers was wondering if anyone knows a way to get video on the gps display in front. i know the garmin street pilot plays video and wonder if i can get video to work in the dodge thanks .

roy wrote tom lawrence wrote im sure my next step will have to be take to a shop but was wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone. it would be nice that by some slim chance it was something simple to fix but i know with most trans problems there usually not. thanks for your time. what youre experiencing is the torque converter clutch engaging and disengaging - not the transmission slipping or hunting between gears. this is almost always an electrical problem. as roy said your throttle position sensor could be going bad sending a false signal to the pcm that thinks youve floored the accelerator pedal causing the pcm to unlock the converter clutch. a shop manual or even a haynes manual and an analog multimeter can determine whether or not the tps is at fault. however there may be a simpler fix. as posted on the turbo diesel register - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - lock up complaint issue 52 page 39 offered an in-depth look at torque converter lock-up. although the author was specifically talking about the 98.5 and newer trucks this tip applies to torque converter lock-up on turbo diesels 94 and later. as documented many people have replaced the tps or apps transmission temperature sensor and numerous other parts trying to correct the ongoing converter clutch problem with varying degrees of success. well for all of the shadetree mechanics in turbo diesel land before replacing any parts or wasting time connecting a scan tool or voltmeter to the electrical circuit start with the easiest step first. i have found the cause of the lock-unlock problem to be a frequency-induced electrical noise into the ground circuit of the battery which causes a fluctuating voltage signal from the tps to the pcm. the solution locate the 10-gauge ground wire that runs from the negative post of the passenger battery to the back of the alternator. this wire is often tan with a black stripe. starting at the back of the alternator loom where the tan/black striped wire heads for the battery wrap the wire with a piece of tin foil about 4 - 6 in length. wrap the tin foil with black electrical tape to secure it in place. road test the vehicle. if the problem is corrected smile. tony garcin dunrite converters vancouver wa 360 693-3200 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - thanks this is good info. i cleaned all my electrical connections and did the aluminum foil trick but that didnt help. i found an article on-line with the specs for diagnosing the tps so i checked mine and it was way out of spec. i tried adjusting it and cleaning it but nothing helped so i replaced it. after replacing the tps i checked the idle voltage and it was still out of spec so not sure what the problem is yet. my reference voltage is 5.11 so that is good and i used the ground wire going to the tps to check the reference so i assume the ground is good. i am still searching for the answer. thanks for your help. please let us know what you come up with. roy finally fixed my overdrive/ converter issue. i have been on the tps warpath througout this problem because mine was out of spec. tps voltage should be around 1 volt at idle position plus or minus .2 volts. my old one was .33. i cleaned and adjusted and the best i could get out of it was .59 so i bought a new one. i rechecked the idle postition voltage which was still only .66 on the new tps. i drilled out the mounting holes a little and got it in spec with .81. thinking it should be fixed i test drove it and to my suprise absolutely no change still same problem. you can only imagine the veins in my head. so after alot of thinking the one thing that i had forgotten about was the fact that the cruise control didnt work anymore. the power light would come on but would not operate. it was at that point something clicked and i relized the trans and cruise both have the brake switch in common. i replaced it and fixed the problem. i blew alot of money on the tps but like i said it was out of spec so i got stuck in that rut and didnt think of anything else other than the tps and circuit being the cause. i will do alittle more diagnosis next time even if something is questionable. thanks for everyones help. what a relief to have this fixed without replacing the trans. thanks again. good deal glad it worked out for ya. roy .

tbone wrote what you are seeing is the grid heater operating. when it cycles on it draws a huge amount of current 100a iirc and that will cause your gauge to swing to the low side. supplying this level of current does not come for free and when the heater is drawing this power the alternator will put a large load on the engine trying to supply it and that will cause your idle speed to drop. it is all normal operations and i wouldnt worry to much about it. otoh you might want to get your batteries load tested as it appears that they no longer have the reserve capacity they should have and the vehicle is relying far more on the alternator alone to supply the required current needed during the warm-up phase. what does the grid heater do both of the batteries were just replaced a few months ago with auto zone units -- about $80 each iirc. i cleaned the battery connectors with a battery cleaning tool when they were changed out. after installing the new batteries the starter spins at an unreal speed -- maybe twice the speed before. cold weather does seem to zap the batteries pretty fast tho. should i have these tested somehow if yes what procedure .
