Differentiate: Alternator, or belt or pulleys?

Q: on sun 22 jul 2007 010505 +0200 repeat repeat@repeat.com wrote i posted this once before but not really good answers. old dodge van mid 70s 318. alternator had spacer that one bolt slipped in. long time ago i lost the spacer and used washers to align the pulleys with the bolt alone. worked for a long time. now loud squealing on startup when engine warms up squealing goes away. squealing only occurs simultaneously with alternator gauge needle bottoming out in charge position alternating with normal position in which case squeal disappears-i.e. as long as needle swings back to midrange position squeal disappears only to reappear when bottoming to charge position. squeal and bottoming of needle go away completely when motor warms up. checking the belt it is one of these kind that has teeth on inside pulley side surface. belt looks ok-not worn; appears undamaged but is somewhat loose about 3/4 to one inch deflection. pulleys seem to be aligned correctly eyeball check only. how do i differentiate between a squealing alternator versus a squealing loose belt vs a squealing out of alignment pulleys what is causing the alternator gauge needle to bottom itermittently to full charge swinging back an forth between that and midline reading-is this a function of a bad voltage regulator i cannot run this thing too long as my neighbors will complain about the noise. i wish to avoid replacing a $100 alternator if that is not the cause. how do i differentially diagnose the cause of the problem. anyone thanks. youre taking something simple and making it way too complicated. tighten the belt and see if the noise goes away -- as it probably will. if the belt has been loose enough to upset your neighbors you should replace it. after the new belt has been run a little while re-adjust it. don www.donsautomotive.com .

hey there i have a 1995 dodge ram 1500 4x4 with 118000 miles on it. all of the maintenance records are current and full for the whole time i have owned it. i am a mechanic myself and have done all of the work on it. i was wondering if anyone is interested in it i just put it out for sale today because i havent drove it in 5 months. but it has been started and warmed up regularly... .

seems that the ac in my 99 ctd quad sport is stays on once turned on and wont shut off from the heater controls. anyone else have this problem and found the cure does the compressor clutch cycle like it normally should or it it stuck on all the time if so it could be a sticking compressor clutch relay in your power distribution center next to the battery. if not then its either a bad switch in the heater controls or faulty logic in the pcm. .

i got under the hood to find the vacuum problem on my 95 dodge ram. found a broken vacuum line under there. there are two vacuum lines that run together to the cruise control diaphram under the battery tray. one is large the other is small and hard plastic. the small plastic one is broken off and i cant find where it is supposed to attache. it is sucking air pretty good. lol i figure this is what is wrong with my heat vents and about the time that started the gas mileage went to hell. i plugged it up to see if it changes the vent and gas mileage problems but the cruise control dont work now so i need to find where it connects. thanks again for all your help. ill be in this group from now till i sell this truck and i have no such plans. best truck i ever owned. ky .

balsofsteele@gmail.com wrote theres two versions of the nv3500. http//dodgeram.org/tech/transmission/nv3500spec.htm - this pag only lists ram specs. iirc dakotas use the narrow ratio trans. i dunn if the nv3500hd is used in any production vehicles i personally have had very good service from the nv3500. i tes drove a few that shifted like crap mostly wide ratio 1500s. i believ there are qc issues but if you can find a good unit youll get solid performance from the transmission i wouldnt fear using it in your described application with basi use your head rules like dont hog the throttle in overdrive dont dump the clutch dont tow huge loads in od uphill etc. a manual transmissions life span is almost exclusively dictated by th driver also be sure to buy the proper nv3500 transmission fluid. its no *that* expensive and its considered a lifetime lubrication. have 80k on mine and its still topped off and clean thanks for the reply so you think the nv3550 in a ram would be the wider ratio and th dakota would be closer ratio if thats the case since i wan something more streetable it would probably be a good idea to use th dakota transmission i guess quality control can be a big issue with those transmissions. i figure i should have decent luck with it as long as i dont get bad one to start with no clutch dumping for me. i figure ill be driving it more like sports car. hoping to lower it a bit sway bars springs etc we bought an 5.0 5spd mustang gt new in 86 and got 215k miles out o the original clutch. never dumped the clutch and spun the tires ver rarely usually by accident. it did see a lot of spirite driving and some powershifting from time to time of course in its last days i was the only one that could get it i gear. when i sold it in 2000 it still had the new clutch in the bac seat that i had been carrying around for six months as far as towing goes no way! in fact ill probably take the to package off. i have no use for towing anything and that way my e cant ask me to use the 5.9 to help her move again! lol! thanks again for the reply - joh .

ok ive read a couple of these and everyone has some sort of idea. but the problem is larger than what the public sees. first there is standardized testing in any well run district. generally 2nd 5th and 8th graders get tested so that they can be tracked in highschool. tracking is the basis of curriculum in the hs grades where they divide the kids into exceptional college bound technical/trades career prep learning disabled and what ever levels might be below that. tracking is also subject to a bit of controversy since it has good points and bad points. on the good side it helps address learning levels thus accelerating the individual student to the best level they can be. this works for the vast majority of students. but on the bad side it can put some kids at levels either below or above what they can deal with on a learning over time basis. it can also leave a child behind if they excel in one area but the other areas lower their track. or it can bury a kid who did well in certain areas but then cannot excel on higher level material. so.... how do you design a curriculum that addresses all levels of learning and complies with this silly no child left behind crap simply put you cannot. again most students will do well with the general curriculum and tracking. about 35-40% im generalizing for the sake of space actual figures may vary of kids wont do well in the standard curriculum. so in order to get them to pass teachers resort to teaching to the test. good teachers hate having to do this because they know two things will happen. first the kids who can do well will not do as well as they can because the bar is set so low. the kids who cannot do well on the standardized test will likely not do well no matter what because they just arent going to get it. out of the 35-40% above about half or 15-20% of the total students will benefit from teaching to the test at least until they take the test. what they leave school with; for that matter what any student leaves school with may be far less. now you may wonder about the good teachers and why they dislike the test and conversly why bad teachers like the test or dislike it. in short good teachers dislike the test because it means they are rated on how many kids meet the minimum standard. so even if they have a room full of the normal range of students and they have the normal pass/fail rate or normal bell curve of grades they get a poor review unless all students pass the standard test. what they know is not all students are equal so some students will fail. there is a reason there are five ratings of proficiency abcd f. the good teachers also know that some kids do not test well. what this means is a student who can discuss the subject and work the subject in class can literally seize up on a test. a teacher can grade on various criteria and methods of learning where a test can only grade on one level or method of testing. a bad teacher will love or hate the standard test. they may love it because it can mask their lack of ability. or they may hate it because it will make their lack of ability terribly obvious. which brings me to the next area of problem teacher ability. good teachers can teach almost any kid and get them to learn. but how do you rate a teacher on the success of a student when the students have huge differences in ability and in support systems well you cant. sadly a good teacher is much like porn you know it when you see it. good teachers dont hide behind contracts or tenure they dont need to because the students respond to them in ways that a trained professional can see and thus evaluate. but that doesnt mean all those students are getting great grades. some students dont have great support in a successful school career. some respongd well to a teacher but do poorly otherwise. too many factors enter into the situation that a good teacher has no control over. a poor teacher might get a bad evaluation but tenure and contracts may save them from getting dumped. plus some students in the bad teachers classes will excel despite the poor ability of the teacher masking that poor ability. in the end each district deals with the situation individually. its a complex issue made even more complex by the nationwide demand for no child left behind. in a very real sense the desired effect of increasing the level of our graduates is lost. we are essentially dumbing down our schools in pursuit of prefect graduation rates. one of two things have to happen if improvement is to result we can accept that some kids just wont graduate and start working to teach each kid at the level that means a passing grade carries some meaning. or we can take tracking to the next level and split kids into restricted programs that are designed to move them to a predetermined level of ability. interesting that we used to do both of these to some level of success before the no child left behin
