i understand so the air holds the valves up so youre better able to take the springs and retainer off. so then where is the seal as opposed to the spring is it under the spring against the head also will i have to take the rocker arms off to get to the springs i guess you can tell i have very limited experiance working with valves or the internal workings of engines. i know a lot about them from what ive read but i have very limited experience in overhauling an engine. i have though rebuilt the automatic transmission on a d-7 cat dozer but i had help instructions and big parts to work with. how do you replace the valves without out removing the heads also what does the air compressor have to do with changing the valves as tbone said the compressed air is used to hold the valves closed. theres a fitting that screws into the head in place of the spark plug that allows an air line to be connected. the cylinder has to be placed at top-dead-center or the compressed air will drive the piston down spinning the engine. anotehr method is to remove the spark plug and thread about a foot or so of clothesline rope into the cylinder. you then roll the engine over to bring the piston up and it compresses the rope against the valves holding them in place mechanically rather than pneumatically. this is the typical backyard method for changing valve springs and seals - works pretty well actually. .

if this is like lifter noise what does your oil pressure gauge look like my durango had a pressure problem even though it was full of oil. carbon builds on the pick up screen. if this is it let me know ill email you how i fixed it. its really easy. i have a tap tap tap noise coming from my engine 2001 ram 1500 5.9l. all fluid levels are good. the noise is audible when i pull away from a stop til about 45mph i think this is when the overdrive kicks in or until i ease back on the gas and maintain a constant speed. anyone have any idea what might be the cause thanks. .

the allison has not been a trouble free transmission for gm according to one of the last jd power ratings- it had the worst rating most problems for automatics in pickups. you will be happy with the upgraded dodge auto. on that note-- we have a local pulpwooder cutting some timber on our property and he pulls the loaded trailor with a 1995 dodge diesel 1 ton automatic. the truck has over 240000 miles on it. i asked him how many transmissions he had replaced in pulling those kinds of loads and he looked at me with a puzzled look and said that he had never had any problems with the trans. go figure!! i dont know what the deal is with dodge transmissions. you seem to either get a good one or a bad one. i realize its not a ram and not the same transmission but a neighbor recently bought one of those chrysler pacificas and the transmission failed at 5000 miles. the little mini vans appear to have disposable transmissions and many knowledgeable mechanic types warn of weak transmissions in the rams also. it seems to me that chrysler products seem to have more than their share of transmission problems across the product line. eisboch .

i was in the same boat also. i asked people here and they were very helpful. i have an 04 ram 2500 cummins ho diesel since june. 18000 miles later have had no problems whatsoever. it runs smooth and is responsive off the line. it is a little louder than a gas engine but nothing ridiculous. i listen to the radio loud anyway so i dont notice it at all. you catch a whif of exhaust occasionally at a red light if the windows are down but again nothing to prohibit buying one of these. it has in a word been excellent!!! i have been thinking of getting a 2500 ram diesel. some owners have told me about a lot of trouble with the fuel pump. has anyone else had any problems with the pump. also is there any other down side or other problems to the diesel besides been more expense to do oil changes. thanks .

since most diesel owners have probable never heard of this problem i thought this may be of interest. also seems that gas engines are now affected. if you have a major bug problem in your vehicle you will see significant problems quickly. these range from frequently plugged filters and rancid smelling fuel to increased stack temperatures. severe smoke and loss of performance or even regular injector or injection pump and fuel tank replacement can result. if you are having any of these problems you need to look closely at your fuel. first check out the element in your fuel filter as well as your filter housing. in diesel fuel you will see or feel a slime build up. if so you have a problem. the slime will usually be black but can be green or brown. in gasoline it is usually clear or almost a jelly consistency. since ive only dealt with this problem once and it involved jp5 jet fuel maybe this is why i assumed it is usually always a white looking gunk. these pests occur naturally in fuel but certain fuels and conditions promote their growth. several things have changed over the last few years that have increased the problem dramatically. because they are living organisms they grow better in a warm climate. many new diesel vehicles now have fuel returns approaching 200 degrees fahrenheit. this means your fuel tanks are hot all year long. these bugs are constantly enjoying a day at the beach. the large use of fuel heaters for winter operation and the amount of water accumulation through condensation and many other factors is also one of the culprits. if this isnt enough the new low sulfur diesel promotes the growth of algae. reducing the sulfur reduces the aromatic content of a fuel. california requires the lowest aromatic level. the problem with this is that the microbes eat the aromatics and are satisfied quickly producing little waste. if however the aromatics are reduced the bugs eat constantly. they become very proliferate and create excessive amount of byproducts. in gasoline applications the problem has surfaced in larger quantities and appears to be linked to the new types of gasoline. we now have oxygenated gas which may or may not include the ethanol-based gasolines. with many places mandating oxyfuels the problem is only going to get worse. for some reason the makeup of these fuels appear to spur on the growth of these critters. this was a surprise to me you may be under the impression that fueling at a large volume station is cleaner than the fuel at your local mom and pop station. this could be an incorrect assumption. having tested hundreds of bulk tanks the high volume tanks tested are without a doubt the ones with the most problems. every time they get fuel they also get the garbage that comes with that load. jerry .
