do diesel engines require more maintenance than gas engines what maintanace has to be done to diesels and how often compared to gas is it more costly lets assume an 03 cummins compared to an 03 hemi gas engine - 6qts. oil and filter every 3000-5000 miles. diesel engine - 12 qts. oil and filter every 7500 miles. pretty much a wash. gas engine - air filter every 30k miles diesel engine - air filter every 30k miles fuel filter every 15k miles diesel is more expensive by $12 for the fuel filter gas engine - plugs every 30k-100k yeah right miles diesel engine - none diesel engine - adjust valves every 150k miles gas engine - buy new engine diesel engine - change coolant every 100k gas engine - change coolant every 100k diesels a little more costly because the coolant capacity is larger oh and lets not forget the most important maintenance of all - fuel gas engine - 89 octane fuel at least at approx. $2.109 a gallon for 15mpg or $21090 over the life of the engine diesel engine - diesel fuel at approx. $1.699 a gallon for 20mpg or $12742.50 for the first third of the engines life using local prices i observed today. .

id have to agree on most everything you said except the air filter. the book on my diesel said 30k but in actuality there was a noticeable difference if i didnt change it every 5k miles. theres 20x more air going through that engine than a gas. and the fuel filters are much more expensive well than most if you count the fuel filters in the tanks of efi cars then probably not. while were at it lets talk about fuel pumps diesel - dont want to go there makes a $200 gas pump sound attractive. but thats repair as well as glow plugs and injectors which again are repair items but should be include in maint figures if youre going for the long haul. and much more shop rags on the oil changes too! have a nice day. cdan do diesel engines require more maintenance than gas engines what maintanace has to be done to diesels and how often compared to gas is it more costly lets assume an 03 cummins compared to an 03 hemi gas engine - 6qts. oil and filter every 3000-5000 miles. diesel engine - 12 qts. oil and filter every 7500 miles. pretty much a wash. gas engine - air filter every 30k miles diesel engine - air filter every 30k miles fuel filter every 15k miles diesel is more expensive by $12 for the fuel filter gas engine - plugs every 30k-100k yeah right miles diesel engine - none diesel engine - adjust valves every 150k miles gas engine - buy new engine diesel engine - change coolant every 100k gas engine - change coolant every 100k diesels a little more costly because the coolant capacity is larger oh and lets not forget the most important maintenance of all - fuel gas engine - 89 octane fuel at least at approx. $2.109 a gallon for 15mpg or $21090 over the life of the engine diesel engine - diesel fuel at approx. $1.699 a gallon for 20mpg or $12742.50 for the first third of the engines life using local prices i observed today. .

and the fuel filters are much more expensive well than most depends on where you buy them. my fuel filters run me $12 a piece. if you buy from a dealership well... it lets talk about fuel pumps diesel - dont want to go there makes a $200 gas pump sound attractive. to compare with a gas pump you have to look at the lift pump on the diesel. approx. cost is $150. yes the injection pump is big money but thats not a maintenance thing and is covered by the manufacturers 5yr/100000 warranty.... something else you dont get with a gas engine without paying for it but thats repair as well as glow plugs and injectors which again are repair items but should be include in maint no glow plugs in the cummins and no i wouldnt consider injectors a maintenance item either. i know lots of guys that have changed injectors but none of them have done it because the old ones were worn on the contrary they remove the good injectors to install new worn via extrude-honing ones .
