Q: hello all... i have a 2003 ram 2500 with the cummins 5.9l ho engine and the automatic tranny. i have just under 10000 miles on it so far. i have heard of other ram owners with diesel engines claiming that they get close to +/- 20mpg. i dont get anywhere close to this. the best i have ever gotten was 16mpg and on average i get about 14.8 - 15. typical use is highway miles usually empty driver and maybe one small passenger and not towing anything. i typically have the cruise control set at 80mph and the engine tachs at about 2300 at that speed. the crazy thing is that i get almost the exact same mileage when towing a 4000lbs trailer. the power this truck has is truely impressive but i thought i would get a little better mpgs. if there are any other 2003 cummins ho auto-tranny owners out there who track their mileage i would be very interested in what you are getting. thanks i wouldnt think that at 10k it is broken in as yet. it should increase. also back the rpm down to around 1800-2000 and see what you get. if you have 410s in it you will suffer a bit as well. roy .

tbone fatchance@noway.now wrote brakes are for stopping clutches are for starting. unless you like replacing parts needlessly. lol and what parts would that be. it puts no more stress on the clutch to engine brake then it does to accelerate if you do it correctly and adds a little life to the brake wear components as well. youre absolutely correct it doesnt put any more stress on than starting. it merely doubles the frequency of use shortening its life. brakes are way cheaper to replace than a clutch and pressure plate. less down time also. actually starting off puts far more stress on the clutch then engine braking unless you are an idiot and try to use second gear at 60 mph to slow down. i have over 80000 miles and engine brake all of the time and so far no problems and still the factory clutch. why would you replace the pressure plate unless you gouged it do you replace the drums and rotors every time you replace the pads and shoes -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

i have a 97 ram that runs good but every few days when i turn the key to start it it will make one loud click. after a few minutes of turning the key it will start up like nothing is wrong. the dealer checked it out and said they couldnt duplicate the problem and couldnt find anything wrong. does it sound like the starter is going bad should i replace it .
