tbone wrote the factory front brakes on the ram suck and are probably due. mine went at about 30000 where the wear indicators were really making noise. sounds like you must move your foot from gas directly to brake rather than coast to a stop sign/light. you forget that i lived in nj and there a leisurely coast up to a stop sign/light at least in my part of the state was not well accepted and the daily tolls on the parkway were an adventure as well. i did tend to drive it more like a sports car than a truck as well which probably didnt help much. like i said before the factory pads 97 were junk. after i replaced then the truck went another 60000 and still had plenty of life in them when one failed bonding seperated and took out the passenger side rotor. both my 2000 and 2001 rams reached 50000 miles on the fronts. they started making an awful racket at about 30000 but it wasnt because they were worn out. they were just glazed. a light sanding and they were good to go for another 20000. perhaps they went with a different pad after 97 or maybe you drive at a more leisurely pace that i do but i can only go by my experiences and he didnt mention the trucks year or his driving style. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

definetly high. why do you need to replace the brakes at only 23600 miles front brakes should last at least 40000 and the rears should last close to 80000. if it is because the rotars are warped take them to a brake place and have them turned/trued and be done w/ it. i personally dont like to turn rotars as they will warp that much easier. if not warped dont turn. if they are warped try turning but chances are they will just warp again and you will have to install new ones. brake jobs around here are $69.00 for front or rear - basic $99.00 for the better pads. i personally do all my brake work myself for about $20 to $30 per axle. i had a big argument one time with the dealer on turning rotors anytime pads are replaced. i feel the same way you do if they are straight and dont have big deep grooves in them leave them alone. my 93 jeep was in for one of many ac condensor replacements done under warranty and i had them change the oil and lube it. well they call me and tell me the front brakes are close to the end the rears had just been replaced under warranty for the third they finally got shoes that didnt destroy themselves in 12k time. i went over there and they were right they were pretty close so i asked how much. the rotors looked great and i saw no reason to turn them. the service guy got all upset then here comes the service manager and he tells me well sir we always resurface the rotors if we do pads. i told him just dont do it and put it on the bill that i didnt want it done. no warranty for pads. i was getting rid of it soon so i didnt care. ok he says. i point to one of the service writers and jokingly say you heard him. he laughs. i tell them to go ahead and i sign the estimate for whatever it was cant remember. i go to pick it up and the bill is 150 bucks higher than agreed! they just went and turned them and said they were too thin and put new on new rotors. i wanted to see the old ones. lol they come out with these pitiful looking all burned up ones oem and mine werent since they warped over and over again and i had replaced them with aftermarket ones that i had no problems with. those arent mine i say laughing. oh yes they are sir! uhh no mine werent oem they look totally different and besides that they werent burned up and they werent that dark! they kind of clear their throats and the service manager comes out and we go into his office. he looks embarrassed and says that the tech went and turned them and tossed them in the scrap barrel when they measured too thin after resurfacing and never read the notes until he started putting things back together. i look at him for a while and ask him so he screws up and i get to pay for rotors i didnt need because he screws up i dont think so! he asks me what i wanted them to do.... i say think about it! he looks like hes got cramps and then asks me like hes embarrassed to even say it you want us to just give you the rotors for.. for ...free yeah chalk it up as a lesson learned and dont screw the tech over just eat it yourself he probably has enough problems already! he gets on the phone to someone gives them the invoice number and then sits there and the guy on the end of the phone yells for 10 minutes saying i need to pay for the god damned rotors. i start laughing since i can hear everything hes saying and say really loudly no! i dont need to pay for the god damned rotors that i wouldnt need if the tech hadnt turned them against my wishes! you fed it up you guys eat it!! the guy on the other end asks the service manager can he hear me he answers yeah but i dont know how! i yell because hes deaf as a rock and has the volume so loud i could hear it 40 feet away! the guy on the other end laughs and says well hes right take them off the bill ill talk to you about this later. and they hang up. he says hes surprised the boss went for it. i tell him if he hadnt i would have put it on a credit card disputed it and drug it out forever so i would win one way or another. i went to another dealer for the next vehicle.. bdk .
