Coolant temp outta control after using radiator stop-leak

From : roy batty

Q: in the same 1999 ram van with the 360 engine after i replaced some really filthy coolant and then put in 2 containers of gunk brand stop-leak which seems to have worked i found the temperature suddenly going sky-high shortly after starting up. yes i put the bottom hose back on coolant level is right to the top but when you put the heat on nothing but room temp air comes out of the panel vents even though the coolant temp is close to 250. and the engine temp gets out of control within 5 minutes so i have to shut it down. did the stop-leak crap clog the thermostat so theres no circulation at all clog the radiator belt is on and turning the alternator voltmeter is normal 14-ish. sheared water pump driveshaft this ones got me worried. -- facts are a therapy of limited usefulness in cases of advanced delusion. -michael kinsley .

i agree with surgeon. that crap is clogging the t-stat or radiator. carl thermostat clogged with crap stop-leak or radiator is full of it or its full of air right under the thermostat fact i have seen this on buick 231 v-6s after overhaul...........the engine will sit there and literally melt down because there was an air bubble in the intake and the thermostat wasnt immersed in water and wouldnt open always drill a 1/16 0.0625 for those of you in decimal land 1.5875 mm for you folks in metric-lalaland thru the metal part of the thermostat to give the air an escape path...................... in the same 1999 ram van with the 360 engine after i replaced some really filthy coolant and then put in 2 containers of gunk brand stop-leak which seems to have worked i found the temperature suddenly going sky-high shortly after starting up. yes i put the bottom hose back on coolant level is right to the top but when you put the heat on nothing but room temp air comes out of the panel vents even though the coolant temp is close to 250. and the engine temp gets out of control within 5 minutes so i have to shut it down. did the stop-leak crap clog the thermostat so theres no circulation at all clog the radiator belt is on and turning the alternator voltmeter is normal 14-ish. sheared water pump driveshaft this ones got me worried. -- facts are a therapy of limited usefulness in cases of advanced delusion. -michael kinsley .

damn lesson learned i guess. i should have lived with the leak it was very minor until i could afford to have it fixed properly. replacing the thermostat is far more attractive than replacing the radiator so is there some kind of antidote to this poison any way to get it out if its frigged the radiator is the radiator history thanks for the advice guys. im an idiot. learn from me. p carl saiyed carlsaiyed@hotmail.com wrote i agree with surgeon. that crap is clogging the t-stat or radiator. carl thermostat clogged with crap stop-leak or radiator is full of it or its full of air right under the thermostat fact i have seen this on buick 231 v-6s after overhaul...........the engine will sit there and literally melt down because there was an air bubble in the intake and the thermostat wasnt immersed in water and wouldnt open always drill a 1/16 0.0625 for those of you in decimal land 1.5875 mm for you folks in metric-lalaland thru the metal part of the thermostat to give the air an escape path...................... in the same 1999 ram van with the 360 engine after i replaced some really filthy coolant and then put in 2 containers of gunk brand stop-leak which seems to have worked i found the temperature suddenly going sky-high shortly after starting up. yes i put the bottom hose back on coolant level is right to the top but when you put the heat on nothing but room temp air comes out of the panel vents even though the coolant temp is close to 250. and the engine temp gets out of control within 5 minutes so i have to shut it down. did the stop-leak crap clog the thermostat so theres no circulation at all clog the radiator belt is on and turning the alternator voltmeter is normal 14-ish. sheared water pump driveshaft this ones got me worried. -- facts are a therapy of limited usefulness in cases of advanced delusion. -michael kinsley -- facts are a therapy of limited usefulness in cases of advanced delusion. -michael kinsley .

hey roy if you learned something it wasnt a total waste. unless you can have the rad flushed and fixed its toast. make sure you flush the entire cooling system to get that crap out of there. obviously your best and most expensive bet is to go with a new rad. if youve flushed everything else out it shouldnt be a problem. also go with a brand new thermo. whats that cost around $5 no biggie. and dont put anything but water or antifreeze/coolant in the rad. 2 cents. joe black 03 dakota 5.9 r/t cc calypso green 93 mustang 5.0 hatch with a few goodies roy batty tyrell@mac.com wrote in damn lesson learned i guess. i should have lived with the leak it was very minor until i could afford to have it fixed properly. replacing the thermostat is far more attractive than replacing the radiator so is there some kind of antidote to this poison any way to get it out if its frigged the radiator is the radiator history thanks for the advice guys. im an idiot. learn from me. p carl saiyed carlsaiyed@hotmail.com wrote i agree with surgeon. that crap is clogging the t-stat or radiator. carl thermostat clogged with crap stop-leak or radiator is full of it or its full of air right under the thermostat fact i have seen this on buick 231 v-6s after overhaul...........the engine will sit there and literally melt down because there was an air bubble in the intake and the thermostat wasnt immersed in water and wouldnt open always drill a 1/16 0.0625 for those of you in decimal land 1.5875 mm for you folks in metric-lalaland thru the metal part of the thermostat to give the air an escape path...................... in the same 1999 ram van with the 360 engine after i replaced some really filthy coolant and then put in 2 containers of gunk brand stop-leak which seems to have worked i found the temperature suddenly going sky-high shortly after starting up. yes i put the bottom hose back on coolant level is right to the top but when you put the heat on nothing but room temp air comes out of the panel vents even though the coolant temp is close to 250. and the engine temp gets out of control within 5 minutes so i have to shut it down. did the stop-leak crap clog the thermostat so theres no circulation at all clog the radiator belt is on and turning the alternator voltmeter is normal 14-ish. sheared water pump driveshaft this ones got me worried. -- facts are a therapy of limited usefulness in cases of advanced delusion. -michael kinsley .

generally if a radiator is leaking its also limed up at least in these parts to the point that boiling it out will open up even more leaks best to bite the bullet and get a new one.........id never buy anything except a modine damn lesson learned i guess. i should have lived with the leak it was very minor until i could afford to have it fixed properly. replacing the thermostat is far more attractive than replacing the radiator so is there some kind of antidote to this poison any way to get it out if its frigged the radiator is the radiator history thanks for the advice guys. im an idiot. learn from me. p carl saiyed carlsaiyed@hotmail.com wrote i agree with surgeon. that crap is clogging the t-stat or radiator. carl thermostat clogged with crap stop-leak or radiator is full of it or its full of air right under the thermostat fact i have seen this on buick 231 v-6s after overhaul...........the engine will sit there and literally melt down because there was an air bubble in the intake and the thermostat wasnt immersed in water and wouldnt open always drill a 1/16 0.0625 for those of you in decimal land 1.5875 mm for you folks in metric-lalaland thru the metal part of the thermostat to give the air an escape path...................... in the same 1999 ram van with the 360 engine after i replaced some really filthy coolant and then put in 2 containers of gunk brand stop-leak which seems to have worked i found the temperature suddenly going sky-high shortly after starting up. yes i put the bottom hose back on coolant level is right to the top but when you put the heat on nothing but room temp air comes out of the panel vents even though the coolant temp is close to 250. and the engine temp gets out of control within 5 minutes so i have to shut it down. did the stop-leak crap clog the thermostat so theres no circulation at all clog the radiator belt is on and turning the alternator voltmeter is normal 14-ish. sheared water pump driveshaft this ones got me worried. -- facts are a therapy of limited usefulness in cases of advanced delusion. -michael kinsley -- facts are a therapy of limited usefulness in cases of advanced delusion. -michael kinsley .

roy my ex-wife ruined a less than 2 year old radiator and heater core with stop leak in the 72 charger we had. all because she didnt want to tell me her kid brother had got mad and poked the radiator with a small screwdriver. ill only use stop leak if i cannot get the vehicle to a radiator shop. budd damn lesson learned i guess. i should have lived with the leak it was very minor until i could afford to have it fixed properly. replacing the thermostat is far more attractive than replacing the radiator so is there some kind of antidote to this poison any way to get it out if its frigged the radiator is the radiator history thanks for the advice guys. im an idiot. learn from me. p carl saiyed carlsaiyed@hotmail.com wrote i agree with surgeon. that crap is clogging the t-stat or radiator. carl thermostat clogged with crap stop-leak or radiator is full of it or its full of air right under the thermostat fact i have seen this on buick 231 v-6s after overhaul...........the engine will sit there and literally melt down because there was an air bubble in the intake and the thermostat wasnt immersed in water and wouldnt open always drill a 1/16 0.0625 for those of you in decimal land 1.5875 mm for you folks in metric-lalaland thru the metal part of the thermostat to give the air an escape path...................... in the same 1999 ram van with the 360 engine after i replaced some really filthy coolant and then put in 2 containers of gunk brand stop-leak which seems to have worked i found the temperature suddenly going sky-high shortly after starting up. yes i put the bottom hose back on coolant level is right to the top but when you put the heat on nothing but room temp air comes out of the panel vents even though the coolant temp is close to 250. and the engine temp gets out of control within 5 minutes so i have to shut it down. did the stop-leak crap clog the thermostat so theres no circulation at all clog the radiator belt is on and turning the alternator voltmeter is normal 14-ish. sheared water pump driveshaft this ones got me worried. -- facts are a therapy of limited usefulness in cases of advanced delusion. -michael kinsley -- facts are a therapy of limited usefulness in cases of advanced delusion. -michael kinsley .
