From : ron m

Q: does any one know of a company that even makes or sells a old style round air cleaner/filter for a 97 ram 1500 5.9 i would think a round style air cleaner would be better that the stock air box and cheaper than the airraid/k&n styles .

im looking for any information about any special tools that may be needed to replace the upper ball joints. on a 1996 ram 1500 with 2 wheel drive. the manual mentions a tool by number however my local rental place knows nothing about it. thanks .

what is the hitch weight when loaded when i purchaced my ram you could get a 2500 that can handle around 2200 lbs on the rear. however if you go with the 3500 you can get a single rear wheel version that is good for about 3000 lbs or the dually that is good for about 4800 lbs. of corse depending on if you get quad cab long bed and diesel or gas engine will effect the amount your truck can handle. dont forget to add in items such as people and cargo you will be carrying in your truck at the same time. .

i own a 1985 dodge ram50 pickup truck with a 2.0 engine. the engine has been rebuilt recently. it had a bad valve so i figured if i was going to spend almost 600 bucks for a valve job why not just get the engine rebuilt. the thing runs strong now but i am only getting about 7 mpg with this thing. any ideas on why the mileage is so bad the carbourator is only about 5 months old a new one from autozone none of the settings have been changed. will cracks in vacuum hoses cause this bad of mileage or vacuum lines incorrectly installed i dread taking it to the dealership. i always feel i am being ripped off when i go to them and there are very very few independent mechanics in this area. any helpful advice out there thanks in advance. dicky .

i have a 1963 hawk motor home on a dodge chassis. i think it is on a one ton. single drive axle dual wheels. in my army days in the early 70s i did quite a few services on heavy trucks and it seems like those 5 tons were set up like this dodge ie the rear wheel bearings ran in differential oil. i seem to remember that we packed the bearings in axle grease anyway. should the bearings be packed right now they dont appear to have axle grease in them. and are undamaged. second question can someone tell me what the wheel bearings should be adjusted too the wheel bearings are lubricated by the differential lube but its common practice to pack them with chassis grease on installation to supplement the axle lube. the normal adjustment is to torque the bearing nut to around 100 ft. lbs. while rotating the drum and then backing the nut off to achieve an end play of .001-.008. also need to know about the front wheel adjustments. the same as the rear with a little tighter free play .001-.003. .

ridiculous. who says that laws against illegal parking dont work.. that will come as a surprise to countless thousands of cities where they work just fine or at least as well as reasonably practical. the reason the tax proposal woke us up is that is one of the most blatantly stupid things we have heard in a while even coming from berkeley. tbone wrote and if those laws actually worked we wouldnt have this problem or the proposal for this punishment tax. any way you look at it our society has become a very much self centered and few people give a damn about anyone but themselves and the only way to make many of them tink about what they do is to impose some sort of cost to it. it sure did wake up most of you guys with just the idea of it. .

in this group i can believe that but a quick look at reality will prove it completely wrong. for example when the interest rates dropped the housing prices in nj doubled and yet people kept buying them. some houses sold within the first week. seems like even a major cost increase and this will include property taxes didnt stop people from buying them. now lets look at the suvs. since they became the thing to drive the price of gas has doubled and yet they are still they are as popular as ever. with the newest opec crap and the oil companies more than willing to rape the american consumer the price of gas is expected to top $3.00 a gallon this summer in some states. this has been and will be a cost increase many times any bs tax would be and they still sell like crazy. i could go on forever with these examples but until you not just you personally are willing to open your eyes... but please give some examples where a tax killed something and make sure that there was not a recession or a loss of popularity in the background that was really causing it. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving tom i really dont think the houses doubled in price just because the interest rate dropped. im sure there are other factors involved. i dont live in nj so im not even gonna guess. housing prices like most things are affected by supply and demand. when the interest rates wend down people decided to stop renting and own instead. this sucked up most of the available housing and caused prices to skyrocket. the point is that the increased cost did little to slow the demand and a tax like that would do little to drop the sales of cars. what it may do is get rid of the junk autos that people keep around because they dont want to be bothered cleaning them out and dumping them or think that they still have some use despite the fact that they have 4 other cars. in my little corner of ohio id guess the reason for housing cost going up and up is due to family a trying to out-do family b. do we really need a full bath for every bedroom a couple of halfs scattered thru the house just because wet bar in the basement paneled and heated garage three fireplaces ect to live no we dont. people buy them because they want them and the contractors just keep building cause they know they will sell. i can say the same thing about cars/trucks. do we need power everything or do we just want it the biggest problem this country has is a good percentage of the people spend money and then try to figure out how to pay for it. we are in complete agreement on this. as far as the tax on an extra car sitting around i pay for that privilege when i buy license tags and put insurance on it. there is nothing about an extra car sitting around. in todays world you almost need an extra car sitting around or risk losing your job if cant get into work due to a breakdown. it is the person with 5 extra cars for nogood reason that fucks it up for the rest of us and the existing laws usually cost to much money to enforce especialy in a crowded neighborhood. those tags are tax enough. your county wants to cut down on cars put the tags at $1000 and tow anything that is not licensed and sitting on public property. the $1000 would hurt everyone and makes no sense. as for the towing how will you know if it is licensed or not. do you intend to waste a police officers time and my tax dollars to run the plates on every car sitting on every road in the county every day of the year -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

this noise suddenly appearred this weekend and i am curious as to thoughts concerning it. i have heard similar noises in engines before and thought the oil was low but it is not. noise is at the rate of like 2 per second and sounds like a small hammer is being hit against the inside of the block. the engine runs fine...help i have a 94 with the same type of noise. noise started around 40k. motor has 183k now and still has that noise. it only happens when engine cold. so far dodge and my other shade tree mechanics can not isolate noise. good luck finding the source. .

has anyone else experienced the chronic warping of rotors that seems to come std. w/the 20 wheels on the 02 and newer rams i am wondering if anyone has had their problem truly fixed. i first experienced this problem w/ about 3000 miles on my 03. well the odometer just flipped 12000 and the problem is back. after the first trip to the dealer i had the rotors replaced and the problem seemed to be corrected. brake operation seemed normal no odd side effects. i just got the truck back from the dealer tonight and heres the latest fix which part of a tsb now - replaced both calipers in the front replaced front pads machined rotors after inspecting runout and thickenss. im surprised there was enough material left on the rotors to turn. on the trip home i had to make a fast stop. i had to push the pedal what seems like halfway to the floor now to get the brakes to really engage. when they do engage they feel kind of spongy does this sound like the technician didnt bleed the brakes completly could be air or they may have installed a pad that was a bit different from what you are use to. or they didnt bed them properly. roy .
