Q: o.k. dodge gurus figure this one out. dodge ram 1500 4x4 quad 100500 miles and new balanced tires brakes and rotors. when initially taking off from stop and without touching gas truck shutters ever so slightly but enough to see out rear view mirror. as soon as i touch the gas its gone or if i reach 3-4 mph. it doesnt do it any other time. if i hold the brake and let it roll at 1-2 mph it will continue to shutter almost hop. is it the torque converter going bad something else the fluid and filter where changed with proper fluid but no improvement. .

what preaching how about right after you said the bible teaches this is how just about every church service starts. only those that teach from the bible. you are correct and exactly what are the ones that are teaching from the bible doing how about preaching!!!! miles and i were discussing a point about my beliefs as compared to his. i gave some reference information. and that was what you were doing up to the point where you said what you did above. after that is was nothing more than preaching even though miles has said more than once that he didnt want to hear it. aw there ya go speaking for others again. just gotta do everyones talking for them dont ya whats the matter budd are ya getting upset because i speak the truth. any way you want to spin it budd you were preaching simple as that. personally i dont care if you do or dont but if you claim not to and then flat out do it a few days later mr. the bible teaches someone is going to call you on it. if you want to preach go ahead but dont do it and then claim that you are not and try and cover with some crap about correcting errors when someone asks you to stop. all that does is make you look like a fool and a liar. tom shut up. oh my god according to you a federal offense has been committed a hate crime even and by you. you are taking away my right of free speech out of hatred. dont worry budd after you are convicted ill forgive you. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

richard -- i think ive got your answer. i chased the exact same symptom for a year in my 97 318 @ 103k because of its variability some days it was there some days it wasnt. eventually i was led to discover the fragile nature of the magnum cylinder head -- cracked valve seats. not enough to see in a vacuum flutter or compression test and not big enough to push coolant out or suck it in but enough to get co in the antifreeze. the ever-so-soft cylinder just fires with a little less gusto under high vacuum conditions -- your no-throttle take-off. as soon as you crack the throttle open the higher load completely masks the symptom. run a test for co in your antifreeze and/or a leakdown test if these conditions make sense to you and your truck and let us know. fyi think about where you put your money....i was in a bind on a sunday afternoon and we magnafluxed a dozen core units -- all cracked on the valve seat. i settled with an awful pair of new asian castings for cheap money to get the truck running but one failed before i was ready to sell it and move on...so personally i rolled the dice with an ebay remand oem unit. for my money however the bare pair from hughes plus a local valve refacing would be the way to go...its priced right. jon richard howard wrote o.k. dodge gurus figure this one out. dodge ram 1500 4x4 quad 100500 miles and new balanced tires brakes and rotors. when initially taking off from stop and without touching gas truck shutters ever so slightly but enough to see out rear view mirror. as soon as i touch the gas its gone or if i reach 3-4 mph. it doesnt do it any other time. if i hold the brake and let it roll at 1-2 mph it will continue to shutter almost hop. is it the torque converter going bad something else the fluid and filter where changed with proper fluid but no improvement. .

thanks people! i checked the pinion depth and mesh pattern before removal so i have a good reference. i suppose i could just go for it and use a new shim of same thickness then install and recheck the depth. if it comes up short i could add shims behind the bearing race in the housing. if it comes up long i have a problem 50-50 chance! im glad i read about the problems people are having with pinion bearings here. i started to get the whine that at first sounded like tires. i figured that at 70k my gears should still be fine but after reading about early failures i blocked up the rear and ran it unloaded and in gear...ugh! just as a data point the truck is a 98 w/70k miles 2wd 5.8l 1500 and has towed the occasional heavy load but in general has been treated well. the only other problem has been an annoying coolant leak at the thermostat housing. -bruce as a further data point has the fluid been changed at regular intervals roy .

ignoramus5425 ignoramus5425@nospam.5425.invalid wrote oh come on! you think hes author 4 individual threads if he had the first clue of what hes looking at no offense iggy no offense taken. i think that i do have a feel of impacts and just how far i could go but i would not take a chance due to risks involved. tell you what go to your local parts store and ask to see a front wheel bearing assembly for your truck in 4x4 configuration. there will be a piece of paper in the box it comes in warning not to use an impact gun when pre-loading the bearing assembly upon installation. while it may be two different ends of the truck the way the bearings are applied use wise is exactly the same i.e. two opposing tapered roller bearings cinched together by a machined shaft. the warning is there because of warranty claims which were researched to be caused by people using an impact gun to tighten the axle stub that goes thru the bearing assembly. the failure is quite tell-tale at this point you are free to decide which way is right but dont say you werent warned. one way you loose a little sweat the other way you loose the parts and work youre about to perform. i hear that same line of bs as carls every time i go mobile to another shop to repair a rear axle always some dumb ass claiming they always use an impact gun to do that. so whyd ya call me yeah well that dumb ass doesnt have to warranty it does he snip old text someone refresh my memory was it a 3/4 or a 1 impact gun that iggy was gloating about a few days ago. well that one was sold to our member see my separate post about it but i have a 1/2 impact gun that i use for unscrewing lugnuts and such. it has three torque settings. keep using it that way - snip old text ok i understand that people can get emotional about 9.25 axles and such. i am just a little guy who is trying to solve a problem without running a risk of totaling his truck. its just iron to me iggy but when i see bad advice all i can do is speak up. but something tells me that if all you were looking for was a shit job with shit results you wouldnt have bothered to author 4 individual threads complete with web link. quite possibly all this is moot since carl lead this whole thing astray claiming that the crush sleeve has something to do with pinion depth. it doesnt and he knows it since he snipped it from his replies .
