two things are guaranteed to make people do weird things to vehicles nearly all the time divorces and repossessions. imho in either case its stupid to do them. no chit - had a subaru once $40 car so no biggy that the previous owners ex dumped a quart of gravel into the engine. that one spun a bearing eventually but i got my moneys worth out of it. yes someone could have stuck a longer dipstick in it but not necessarily out of malicious intent . . just good old fashioned lack of knowledge that not all dipsticks like people are the same. or is the pan caved in pan is a thing of beauty. i did wonder if the different two size engines that truck was available with wouldnt have swapped dipsticks - in which case could be an honest mistake. unfortunately unless you can prove malicious intent on the part of the previous owner in a court of law youre stuck with the repairs because you probably bought it without any warranty that is as-is. had the devils own time getting the title straightened out...aint going there again! anyway if we have to throw a $400 engine into a $400 truck that is otherwise a dream im not going to bitch too much. only other real problem it has is some squirrely electronics course if it didnt ive had a gauge to tell me i was in trouble! and thats no biggy if i can get a day loose to play under the dash - this one doesnt look like its got the dash from hell like my blazers. -- budd cochran in tribute to the united states of america and the state of israel two bastions of strength in a world filled with strife and terrorism. ------ okay this is kind of a weird one. bought my daughter an 88 dakota. neat little truck never had one before and i like it. usually as soon as i get a new vehicle all my new are used ; i change/inspect all fluids and filters. i didnt get a chance this time as i had to drive thirty miles to town to exchange the brake drums i bought for another car for the ones that fit it...on the way back the dakota sounded like it had a hot engine - gauges are squirrelly intermittant so cant say anything useful there - i shut it down checked everything had already checked oil transmission fluid coolant etc did it again. all is well. tried to start it - aack!! shut it down! sounded like a threshing machine - i just knew it had thrown a rod which indeed was the case. okay for the reason - evidently someone has put in the wrong dipstick it slid neatly along the bottom of the oilpan and measured the oil as full even though it wasnt. ive had other older vehicles with the wrong dipstick but either it was too short or it really caused grief going in so you noticed it. this was neither slid right in like it belonged there. these previous wrong dipsticks are part of why i do the fluids and filters bit right away - but unless they were obviously binding badly it was always a case of too short rather than too long. question - anyone ever encountered such a thing this truck was the child of a bankruptcy settelment - i wonder if someone found a dipstick painted to match but the wrong length and purposly sabatoged the thing might be an engine swap - anyone know if the dipsticks for the 3.9 and whatever the other one was match maybe somebody was just stupid rather than malicious. i want my shop back! this having no shop in michigan weather is getting expensive! .

yeah and the hemi produces a lot of horse power at high rpm but for my money i prefer more low end torque for pulling/hauling and off roading. the hemis great if you want to go fast without much of a load. though to be fair i didnt have a chance to try it with load. has anyone taken a test drive in a awd hemi impressions good enough for someone who doesnt need 4wd but wants something close to the traction of 4wd im not excited about the traction on 2wd . how does all drive handle on the highway .

not any more than any other make/model. my opinion is to not bother with the 4.7l or 5.2l except in a 2wd standard cab. they are just too weak for a heavy truck. the 5.9l or the newer hemi are much stronger and gas mileage isnt enough different to worry about. thats kind of funny. i can see the choice of the hemi for towing but the 5.9 isnt much stronger than the other 2 engines. 4.7 - 235 hp 295 torque 5.2 - 230 hp 300 torque 5.9 - 245 hp 330 torque a bit more oomph in the 5.9 but not enough to shame the other two engines. only the hemi or a diesel will offer a lot more for towing. jim .

mac davis wrote we have a dakota with a 4.7 and a ram with the 5.9.... it may only be 10 hp and 35 pounds of torque but its a big difference.. mac does the hemi 5.9 appear to be a quieter engine than the 4.7 dealer says the 5.9 hemi is much quieter than the 4.7 since it isnt lugging down. he did say the exhaust note at the tailpipe is louder though. bp .

i have a 02 reg cab with the 4.7 i am very happy with the truck the biggest complaint i have see is with the gas mileage i average about 15.5mpg if that is good enough for your family vehicle then i say go for it. i am looking at used 2002 - 2003 ram 1500 quad cabs to purchase. i have really been impressed at these trucks. hope to get a deal done in the next week or so. are there any issues with these vehicles thanks claud .

thanks for the mileage info. it will not be a huge issue. my wife and i both have other daily drivers. this is for when our twins go somewhere with us or we go on trips. i dont anticipate putting more than about 8k miles per year on the truck. claud hood wrote i have a 02 reg cab with the 4.7 i am very happy with the truck the biggest complaint i have see is with the gas mileage i average about 15.5mpg if that is good enough for your family vehicle then i say go for it. i am looking at used 2002 - 2003 ram 1500 quad cabs to purchase. i have really been impressed at these trucks. hope to get a deal done in the next week or so. are there any issues with these vehicles thanks claud .

claud spinks wrote thanks but i will not be towing much. i have access to a turbo diesel f-350 with a fifth wheel for towing. we will be using it more or less as family car with a really big trunk. this will also be a 4th vehicle for us so i dont want to spend the $$ on more vehicle than i need. thanks claud that is true but i had a 2000 qc 1500 with the 5.2l. even when not towing it struggled on anything except downhill. i pretty much never used od. on very slight uphills it could not maintain 70mph in od. it was just plain gutless with no trailer and nothing in the bed. i had the 3.55 rear end. the 3.92 may be an acceptable match for the 5.2l or 4.7l. .

redneck tookover hell wrote the switch in my 01 1500 gets warm wasting power that would otherwise go to the headlight bulbs. really now i think you are a bit confused about why the switch is heating up the switch in my 01 1500 gets warm as it wastes power that could otherwise produce useful light at the headlight bulb filaments. not good enough maybe i need a heat expert such as a hell dweller to explain the phenomenon. besides my temporarily deceased dodge dakots i also have two blazers actually four but two are actually my own personal problem as opposed to my mates. almost identical s-10s both 1989s. one has a heat sink on the rheostat for the dash lights the other doesnt. the heat expert can explain that one too if he or she is bored. ; .

take it you had the power robbing automatic power robbing automatic lets see how would that be with the torque convertor locked in 3rd or in 4thoverdrive with 3rd being 1 to 1 and 4thoverdrive being relatively the same ratio as 5th in the manual. the torque convertor muliplys the torque to pull from a standing start more than a manual trans does seems like you need to take a course in automatic transmissions and torque convertors. ill start watching reality tv shows when i can vote people off the planet. .

what he doesnt realize is that the manual tranny has one extra gear and as a result closer gear ratios and does not lose the power that is lots on the conversion in the torque converter. redneck tookover hell wrote take it you had the power robbing automatic power robbing automatic lets see how would that be with the torque convertor locked in 3rd or in 4thoverdrive with 3rd being 1 to 1 and 4thoverdrive being relatively the same ratio as 5th in the manual. hmm....thats a bit over simplified. you are aware that almost all automatics get worse gas mileage than a manual even on the highway with the tc locked. .

i have the 02 reg cab 1500 with the 3.7 and 5-speed manual. i get about 17.5 in daily driving and if i have a tailwind on the interstate a shade over 20.00 at the 70-75 local speed limits cruising. the truck has more than enough power for me mostly daily driving with no load and pulling a small boat occasionally but in a recent move with the bed full of furniture pulling a loaded u-haul 6 x 12 trailer i was surprised how well it pulled the load. granted this was mostly flat towing and i elected not to use overdrive but it pulled better than i had expected. the only problem was that there are 2 recalls on my truck. one for side mirrors that might fall off in some circumstances the other for a heater wiring harness that might overheat. if you get one make sure the dealer has already repaired these items if applicable to save yourself a trip back. this engine isnt available on the quad cab but a friend at work has a 03 quad cab with a 4.7 the dealer loaned him a quad cab with the hemi for a few days to have some work done on his truck and he says he didnt detect much difference in the two trucks. -- j p haggerty thanks for the mileage info. it will not be a huge issue. my wife and i both have other daily drivers. this is for when our twins go somewhere with us or we go on trips. i dont anticipate putting more than about 8k miles per year on the truck. claud hood wrote i have a 02 reg cab with the 4.7 i am very happy with the truck the biggest complaint i have see is with the gas mileage i average about 15.5mpg if that is good enough for your family vehicle then i say go for it. i am looking at used 2002 - 2003 ram 1500 quad cabs to purchase. i have really been impressed at these trucks. hope to get a deal done in the next week or so. are there any issues with these vehicles thanks claud .
