Broken Bolt Differential Cover
From : steve
Q: friends i have a 1996 1500 pu 4x4 5.9l. it has what the dealership calls a 9 1/4 corporate rear differential. i was changing the lube in it and had removed the cover. as i put the differential cover back on and was tightening the bolts the head of the very top ones sheared off. my question is can i leave it like this until i service it again or am i going to have to get it tapped out thanks steve the dummy s the d aint life a bitch vbg chances are it will be ok till you need to service it again. since the broken ones are at the top it is only going to get lube splashed on it when driving. take a look at it in a few days if its not leaking by then it will be ok. helpful hint when you try to remove the broken bolt try a left hand drill bit. if the threads arent damaged the bit will turn the broken bolt right out. slick as snot on a doorknob. denny .

im gonna have to disagree on this as well. a full-time 4wd system by its definition has power going to the front and rear axles all the time. because of that it has to have a way of allowing the front driveshaft to turn at a different rate than the rear... be it a viscous coupling an open differential in the transfer case a lsd in the t-case etc. i stand corrected twice. .

theguy wrote miles you are correct on this one. black boxes of the type discussed here would be of very little help to police in accident investigation. there would be instances where the data would be valuable but it would be rare. the times that they would be of help would in no way justify the cost of them which we would all pay nor the injustices that blind data can cause. i think a lot of folks are arguing about nothing and everything. this is a complicated two part question and deserves two sets of complicated answers. first what is this black box doing thats a tough question because the car companies are not very forthcoming with that information. the general concensus is that it records the last 5sec of data wich probably included tps brakes and maybe an accelerometer. nobody here seems to really know exactly what information is recorded and for how long. can this information harm you or cause your insurnce claim to be denied or cause you to be prosecuted for an alleged crime the answer is - i think - maybe. the other half of this coin is can this information ever help you i think the answer is probably no. its possible but i doubt it. the burdon of proof is not on you its on the prosecuter. so why should i pay for an object that i dont want dont need will not help me and can most likely hurt me the second big question is the one that we should all be concerned about. and that is where is this technology going ah now we get to the real meat of the matter. is that black box currently connected to a gps can your driving actions etc be monitored currently i see no evidence to support that except maybe for onstar equipped vehicles. but can that be done sure! heres the real problem and concern. this is what should be cathing our attention and make us all stand up and shout stop! the technology already exists; look at onstar. when you get in a wreck and your air bag deploys they know right away that it happened and exactly where you are. think about what that means. air bag deployment is simply a data point. no more no less. its either a 1 or a 0. is speed greater than 55mph a 1 or a 0 you bet your life it is. now the helpfull onstar lady gets that data point and calls the local highway patrol. not inform them that you need help but inform them youre traveling down the nj turnpike at greater than 55mph and exactly where you are and what your license plate is. and why bother to track you down stop you and write you a ticket way too much manpower for a simple $100 fine. why not just send you one in the mail do you see where this is going its no longer about safety and security. its no longer about the general good. its has nothing to do with protecting the children. its now about revenue both private and government. and if you think everything i said is drivel take a close look at whats happening with red light cameras around the country. you have to look at where things are headed and then stop them if you dont like that direction. once it happens its too late and were hosed. -- ..bob 1997 hd fxdwg - turbocharged! 2001 dodge dakota qc 5.9/4x4/3.92 1983 gmc jimmy - mountain beater 1966 mustang coupe - daily driver 1966 ffr cobra - ongoing project .

it seems that either water or fluid was escaping through this bolt. waiting will not help because it will surely leak again. your best bet is to remove the cover drain the fluid do whatever you have to do to extract the broken bolt reseal the cover with the appropriate sealer change all bolts from grade 5 to grade 8 or better yet go to arp stainless bolts. refill the differential with the appropiate fluid and drive. thread sealant should be used on all the bolts to prevent rusting & the sealant used on the cover should circle all the bolt holes and be about a 1/4 thick. tighten all bolts to spec and you should be alright for quite a while. hope this helps-went through this nightmare before! john .

budd cochran wrote to be honest i wouldnt want to live there . . .too hot in the summer. when i was a kid my family drove thru flagstaff going and coming from ca and both times mom gave us kids wet towels to keep us cool 53 chevy no ac. you were too hot in flagstaff in the middle of the summer its lucky to hit 90 tops. most of the summer its in the 70s maybe low 80s and humidity down around 20%. now if you meant phoenix thats another matter. still its beats the heck out of most midwest south and eastern cities in the summer! it was the summer of 56 for a california vacation and then again in 57 moving to ca and 58 coming back to co. the desert was stifling of course and i remember something being said about unusual heat in flagstaff. how are the winters there ive been in the midwest and east in the summer. phoenixs typical 105 summer day at 5% humidity feels considerbly cooler than say detroits 90 degrees and 90% humidity. in most of the country it is either hot and sticky or its frigid cold. in phoenix we have hot and dry in the summer and from october through april its nice and cool. 70s for a high right now. the best weather is the california coast. 70s year round. its problem is that millions of other people think its great too! i dont like a lot of humidity either. thats why i left indiana summer of 1976 108 degrees and 105% humidity . . .yep super-saturated and lived for so long in co. phoenix like moab ut gets too hot for comfort for me anymore. as a kid i enjoyed those 115 degrees-in-the-shade days in s.e. co but i cant handle them anymore. i dont want to even consider so cal . .i had breathing troubles in pomonas smog in 57 and i dont want to try it again with a bad ticker. the weather is one reason why were trying to move back to canon city co. mild summers and moderate winters make for a yearly average of 57degrees at 5000 ft in the colorado rockies. budd .

my original intent was to question why simply retightening the gas cap didnt solve the problem. only actually refilling the tank did it. gary john doe wrote seems the ineffective problem fixes all have been around the fule evap cannister gas cap or vacuum leaks. several other makes have problems with the customer not the vehicle. tighten te gas cap fully one turn after clicking starts to ensure there is a positive seal. works like a charm! gary gary@gvtc.com wrote well folks i found out what the obd code above was telling me. i decided to make an appointment with the dealership after removing and reinstalling the gas cap. someone had mentionted that might be the culprit. even removing it reinstalling it and driving for over 100 miles didn do a thing so i reasoned it must be something else. wrong. the night before i was to take it in i decided to fill it with gas. after filling got in and started it up. no more light. now anyone know why sticking a gas filler nozzle in the tank access would do anything that removing and reinstalling the gas cap wouldnt for the evap monitor to run the fuel level has to be between 15% and 85%. .
