Brake controller suggestions

From : robert bates

Q: i have a 2003 2500 hemi and am trying to find a trailer brake controller that will hide under the dash since there really isnt a good place to mount a surface mount unit. does anyone have a controller they would recommend .

i use a tekonsha prodigy that im very impressed with. i have it mounted just to the right of the steering column on the knee blocker. tekonsha also makes a wiring harness cable that plugs right into your oem harness. hope this helps! chryco service manager member sae i have a 2003 2500 hemi and am trying to find a trailer brake controller that will hide under the dash since there really isnt a good place to mount a surface mount unit. does anyone have a controller they would recommend .

the tekonsha should fit with no problem. i used a tekonsha voyager for 4 years on my 98 ram and it fit nicely under the dash. on sun 7 sep 2003 165834 -0500 mike simmons mikesim@fidnet.com wrote i use a tekonsha prodigy that im very impressed with. i have it mounted just to the right of the steering column on the knee blocker. tekonsha also makes a wiring harness cable that plugs right into your oem harness. hope this helps! chryco service manager member sae i have a 2003 2500 hemi and am trying to find a trailer brake controller that will hide under the dash since there really isnt a good place to mount a surface mount unit. does anyone have a controller they would recommend .

i use the jordan ultima 2020 which is the same size as the tekonshas. it uses a sensing cable to the brake pedal arm and is totally proportional to the pressure on the brake pedal. it has no accelerometer doesnt care if its level doesnt use the brake light switch and the front panel shows the current actually applied to the brakes on a 5/8 lcd panel. if you blow a brake coil or have a broken cable the ammeter lets you know. its mounted on the right knee panel and leaves room for my cb right by it with both front panels visible when driving im 6-4. tekonsha depends on deceleration sensed by an accelerometer to apply the trailer brakes. if you break traction or have a tow vehicle brake failure no deceleration means no trailer braking until you actuate the manual brake control on the front of the controller. rick -- my real e-mail address is yofuri@oakharbor.net ill third the tekonsha. i have the voyager xp. the tekonsha should fit with no problem. i used a tekonsha voyager for 4 years on my 98 ram and it fit nicely under the dash. on sun 7 sep 2003 165834 -0500 mike simmons mikesim@fidnet.com wrote i use a tekonsha prodigy that im very impressed with. i have it mounted just to the right of the steering column on the knee blocker. tekonsha also makes a wiring harness cable that plugs right into your oem harness. hope this helps! chryco service manager member sae i have a 2003 2500 hemi and am trying to find a trailer brake controller that will hide under the dash since there really isnt a good place to mount a surface mount unit. does anyone have a controller they would recommend .

mike how well does it respond i read somewhere that the electronic progressive ones dont come on right away due to the inherent lag of the inertia sensor. im definitely wanting the progressive type--the one that came with my 96 is not as you probably know so if you set enough to help slow you down you cant touch your brakes at slow speeds unless you want to be jerked to a stop creeping in slow traffic. on an old gmc i once had they were using the progressive type that tapped into the brake hydraulics. never leaked and it worked really well. -aj i use a tekonsha prodigy that im very impressed with. i have it mounted just to the right of the steering column on the knee blocker. tekonsha also makes a wiring harness cable that plugs right into your oem harness. hope this helps! chryco service manager member sae .

mike simmons wrote aj the prodigy has a solid state inertia sensor that reacts almost instantaneously. also there are several boost levels that can be dialed in in addition to the normal power dial. the boost feature begins applying voltage to the brake the moment the brake light switch is energized thus eliminating the lag you refer to. the prodigy is not jerky at all in stop and go traffic like a lot of other electronic controllers. ive used other controllers by tekonsha and hayes and the prodigy is the best by far. they are a little pricey compared to some other models but i found mine at southwest wheel www.southwestwheel.com for about $125.00 which includes free shipping. the connecting harness is about $9.00 iirc. hope this helps! mike thanks for the help mike. i found it for $106 and the harness for $9 w/free shipping at http//www.rjays.com/tekonsha/brk-controls-01.htm and will order it in the morning. aj .

robert bates wrote thanks guys. a prodigy it will be. just passing along some info for anyone else looking for a controller couldnt find one bad review from people that purchased the prodigy looked at about 20 responses at http//www.campingworld.com/browse/skus/index.cfmskunum=20535 they also sell it but at almost $40 higher than rjays. the free shipping from rjays turned out to be 2nd day air. cant beat that. aj .

mike simmons wrote i think you will be very pleased with it! mike i put it in today and used a horse trailer to adjust it. makes a big difference compared to the voyager it replaced. o.t.--this trailer is 2 years old and when i brought it home from the dealer the right rear wheel had a lot of grease slung around on the rim. that wheel never felt any hotter than the others but today the hub and brake drum were too hot to touch for more than a second or two. the other three were just warm. must have a brake sticking or somethings going wrong with the bearings. only use it a few times a year but definitely have to find out whats going on there. but yeah youre right--this is the controller i wish id had on this truck all along. aj .
