Block Heater Cable Install

From : Annonymous

Q: david i do not think operating the heater grid has value unless it is well below 0 and i would question its value even then because of the enormous battery drain it creates. please keep in mind that battery performance degrades significantly in cold temps. if you need more than 1 cycle you need battery blankets as well. having water in the fuel has nothing to do with the age of he vehicle. it has everything to do with fuel quality. you need to notify the fuel station that sold you the last tank. he has a problem. your manual recommends operating the water tap on the filter after every tank. it only takes a minute and yes water in the fuel seems more prevalent in the cold weather. steve its been getting cold here in kc so i plugged in the block keater last night. i went out to start up the truck this afternoon and two things caught my attention. the first was how quickly the wait to start indicator turned off it was only 3-4 seconds. in the past several weeks where its been cool mid-low 30s i havent used the block heater and the wait time was a lot longer upwards of 10+ seconds if i recall correctly. pretty impressive.... anyway in the manual it says it may be beneficial to cycle the manifold heaters by turning the ignition switch off after the wait light goes out then turning the key back on and starting the engine when the wait light goes out. this is for cold weather starts at or below 0. but with what i observed with todays start low 20 - high teen temp i wonder if theres a benefit to that also for the 1st time today i noticed that the water in fuel indicator came on very briefly. is this due to the cold weather and the engine heater being on how concerned should i be at the first time i see the indicator i would be somewhat surprised if i was needing to be drainig a fuel filter this soon after purchasing a new truck... thanks david... .

mike i have seen this before. you are correct to a point. the use of these aftermarket filters indeed reduce restriction and do add potentially more power but they do this with high risk as well. if you live in a pristine environment and never encounter dust you might get away with their use. i do know that 500 hp is possible with a clean stock filter. if you increase the engine potential beyond 450 using 2 airboxes with stock filters may make some sense but the stock filter serves me well. i have an 04 3500 ho with 4 exhaust banks glass pack muffler banks six gun & speed loader banks high ram and primocol guages. i dont need more. it is already like driving a freightliner on steroids. steve after many many heated discussions on this ng about the efficacy of k$n filters vs. oem paper filters here is some definitive data regarding both. i realize that i may be opening a can of worms but i believe that this should put to rest the hype about the k$n filter once and for all. the test data found on this link should confirm to many what i and others on this ng have maintained for years that the reusable filters aint worth the money and can indeed harm your engine! enjoy! http//home.usadatanet.net/jbplock/iso5011/spicer.htm mike chryco service manager member sae .
