Q: i have a friend who owns an 01 3500 w/ cummins that is asking how he can get better fuel mileage. he currently gets about 13mpg. the truck is an at w/ 4.10 gearing. since my 00 gets 19.5mpg or so im not much help in solving the mpg problem since i dont have it. anyone have any tips -- max everyone is entitled to his own opinion he is not entitled to his own facts. sen. daniel patrick moynihan of new york .

i dropped the steering column and dash down to replace the heater core. i did not have the steering wheel straight or locked when i loosened it. when i put it back together and tried to start the truck the key will turn but the column is locked and truck will not start. i realize now that i should have made certain the wheels were straight and the column was locked before dropping the column. what happened and how do now unlock the column .

tom i completely agree thats i called it a stupid statement. steve i got the truck back after the lift pump conversion was complete bill payed by dc very expensive job and a lot of work. i now see 8-9 lbs of pressure at idle and 6-7 under throttle. there was a statement on the conversion paperwork saying that pressure is irrelevant and no aftermarket pressure gauge should be believed and that it is all about flow. sounds like a pretty stupid comment for them to print. do you know the story well yes and no. while its true that the test procedure in the service manual for the lift pump is all about measuring fuel flow and not pressure pressure is still a valid way to verify the health of the lift pump. the cp3 injection pump isnt nearly as sensitive to fuel pressure as the vp44 was and will still operate safely at near-zero fuel pressure so long as theres fuel flow. but barring any kind of abnormal and unlikely restriction you can safely assume that the cp3 is being fed a constant supply of fuel so long as your fp gauge registers some amount of pressure. so to me an fp gauge is still plenty valid and much cheaper than a flow gauge. .

that should have a code set iirc but will the dash read out have it also im assuming from what you say the truck will run fine otherwise -- max everyone is entitled to his own opinion he is not entitled to his own facts. sen. daniel patrick moynihan of new york max dodge wrote i have a friend who owns an 01 3500 w/ cummins that is asking how he can get better fuel mileage. he currently gets about 13mpg. the truck is an at w/ 4.10 gearing. since my 00 gets 19.5mpg or so im not much help in that 4.10 does not help. he has to turn higher rpms to go the same speed as everyone else. on my 2000 2500 with 3.73 rear end i got 21 highway. with the stock 3.53 was nearly 25mpg solving the mpg problem since i dont have it. anyone have any tips a bad iat sensor can kill the fuel mileage without any other symptoms. -- ken .
