so how does microns relate to inches of mercury microns are smaller incriments of measure and are much more sensitive and accurate than hg. so what is so magical about 5 minutes why not 2 minutes or 10 minutes or 24 hours its just a guestimate. i typically do something else for 15 minutes and check back. the compressor seals would not work in reverse so the vacuum test was basically worthless as far as telling me the seals were good if thats the case you should charge the system with nitrogen and make sure it maintains pressure. -- nathan w. collier http//inlinediesel.com http//7slotgrille.com http//utilityoffroad.com http//bighornrefrigeration.com .

microns. so how does microns relate to inches of mercury micrometers... 1 millionth of an inch. 1 of hg = 25400 microns of hg. however the scale is inverted. in other words a perfect vacuum 29.921 of hg at sea level is 0 microns. therefore 500 microns is about 29.903 of hg. .

micron is really almost a useless measurement to almost anyone that is reading this group. ......if you dont care about doing the job properly that is. it cannot be measured with the equipment available to the service or home repair person. i paid less for my micron gauge than i paid for my pressure gauges. from what i understand now about this subject almost anything that will draw a vacuum will work just fine on our ac systems if it can acheive a certain inches of mercury. if it can pull 500 microns it will work just fine in your a/c systems. if it wont and it wont its not ok to use it. sure it will make the system run and cool but it will not cool as efficiently as it would if it were done right. the suggestion that it will is irresponsible at best. -- nathan w. collier http//inlinediesel.com http//7slotgrille.com http//utilityoffroad.com http//bighornrefrigeration.com so now lets get off this micron issue and on to something that we all can measure. if a manufacture of a specific vacuum pump states it can draw 50 micron then at what inches of mercury are they talking because then any vacuum pump that can achieve that pull will do that same thing volume again is not important. thank you ron in phx az where ac is required. ron wrote it states the ford service manual at least 25 inches of mercury and as close to 30 that you came get. you are right that is not the same as 500 microns. so how does microns relate to inches of mercury so what is so magical about 5 minutes why not 2 minutes or 10 minutes or 24 hours i help a vacuum over night on the last job with no problem but the compressor seals would not work in reverse so the vacuum test was basically worthless as far as telling me the seals were good nathan w. collier wrote now 25 is not that great of vacuum and far less than someone on this group has been saying is required. you pulled 25hg. thats not the same thing as 500 microns. i would probably be bringing the new compressor back for a refund it is only held a vacuum for 5 minutes. youre reading it wrong. it means to wait at least 5 minutes to make sure it holds the vacuum. if it will hold vacuum for 5 minutes it will hold vacuum indefinately. .

micron is really almost a useless measurement to almost anyone that is reading this group. it cannot be measured with the equipment available to the service or home repair person. vacuum pumps are specified in volume/sec and inches of mercury. volume is not important to us because we are working in a closed system if we had a hole in one end and were trying to keep a vacuum inside then volume per minutes would be very important now i sure hope everyone knows that you must have your ac system closed before you start drawing your vacuum. so now all we need to do is determine what the min vacuum we need to pull and from what i understand now about this subject almost anything that will draw a vacuum will work just fine on our ac systems if it can acheive a certain inches of mercury. so now lets get off this micron issue and on to something that we all can measure. if a manufacture of a specific vacuum pump states it can draw 50 micron then at what inches of mercury are they talking because then any vacuum pump that can achieve that pull will do that same thing volume again is not important. thank you ron in phx az where ac is required. ron wrote it states the ford service manual at least 25 inches of mercury and as close to 30 that you came get. you are right that is not the same as 500 microns. so how does microns relate to inches of mercury so what is so magical about 5 minutes why not 2 minutes or 10 minutes or 24 hours i help a vacuum over night on the last job with no problem but the compressor seals would not work in reverse so the vacuum test was basically worthless as far as telling me the seals were good nathan w. collier wrote now 25 is not that great of vacuum and far less than someone on this group has been saying is required. you pulled 25hg. thats not the same thing as 500 microns. i would probably be bringing the new compressor back for a refund it is only held a vacuum for 5 minutes. youre reading it wrong. it means to wait at least 5 minutes to make sure it holds the vacuum. if it will hold vacuum for 5 minutes it will hold vacuum indefinately. .

i just did a compressor change out on an 1989 f-250. i used a commercial vacuum pump that pulled a vacuum of around 27. what i want to comment on is that my ford service manual states pull a vacuum of at least 25 for a max of 30 minutes if the whole system had been replaced. now 25 is not that great of vacuum and far less than someone on this group has been saying is required. so far i did everything that the ford manual stated and everything seems to be working ok. what i also found interesting is that the ford manual said after you disconnect the vacuum pump make sure that the system will hold that vacuum for at least 5 minutes. now i do have a problem with this statement. i would probably be bringing the new compressor back for a refund it is only held a vacuum for 5 minutes. ron tbone wrote because the fluid in my pump is getting old and is about due for a change. you dont change it after each use or its just been sitting or what this is an industrial vacuum pump and nowhere does it say to change the oil after each use. probably because it was not built for the sole purpose of air conditioning service. actually it used to live at bendix with about 5 of its brothers running 24/7 to test flight control systems. do you know of any retail places here in nc in the raleigh area. i would recommend johnstones although they may require you have an account with them. ok i will check that out. .

so how hard is hard atmospheres as previously stated you need to pull a vacuum to at least 500 microns in order to properly evacuate the system of moisture and non-condensables. i think you have better find one and try it before you say that done it many times with any type of compressor you can name. having used a micron gauge on it i can tell you with authority that youll never achieve 25% of your target 500 microns. i have found that when a hvac system has really failed it should just simply be replaced with a completely new system. it depends upon what you mean by really failed. a minor leak is nothing. most of the charging products contain leak stopper and ive found it very effective in the past if its a seal issue. -- nathan w. collier http//inlinediesel.com http//7slotgrille.com http//utilityoffroad.com http//bighornrefrigeration.com .

it is all very simple unless you are a simple minded persons. snoman wrote transurgeon wrote if you have 100 psi running or not you probably dont have a leak whats the pressures with it running and why does this mechanic think that you have a leak low funds the amount of pressure you have in system depends on the tempature of the system but this is not a accurate test always because as long as there is enough freon in the system to keep some liquid under pressure the pressure will be at a constant vs tempature. the real test of a charge state is when it is running and tempature and humidity is factored in. it is not cut and dried as some would lead you to believe. .

a used compressor out of an old refrigerator with a connector on it makes a great vacuum pump and basically free. i find this statement ignorant foolish and very irresponsible. you can not pull adequate vacuum with a used compressor. no but it is handy for pumping the system down to see if it holds vacuum if it holds then hook up the big dog overnight and btw........if you find an old one pre about 1980 youd be surprised how good a vacuum it will produce the new ones are for crap for this use tho .

so what tools are so expensive that are required to work on an a/c system vacuum pump $300. recovery unit $800. recovery tank $100 proper gauges $100-$300. all sorts of hand tools. a used compressor out of an old refrigerator with a connector on it makes a great vacuum pump and basically free. i find this statement ignorant foolish and very irresponsible. you can not pull adequate vacuum with a used compressor. -- nathan w. collier http//inlinediesel.com http//7slotgrille.com http//utilityoffroad.com http//bighornrefrigeration.com .

mine is a 97 and the brackets still look pretty much like they did when i bought it and i can rub against them without getting rust stains on my clothing. what he is describing is heavy rust and that usually involves liquid water. hmmmmmm.... ive looked and i cant find anywhere that gary said it was heavy rust or is this just your superior intuition coming to the fore again we mere mortals stand in awe! no mike you are just being an asshole imagine that. at least this time your post sotra follows what i was saying unlike the other rust thread. what exactly is your definition of heavy rust to me if just brushing against the part gets rust stains on your clothing that is what i would call fairly heavy perhaps your definition is different. iirc he also said that they replaced some of the parts for this. does dc normally replace heavy metal parts for light surface rust -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

to troubleshoot our low voltage prob..they said it was a sensor at the starter sensor at the starter huh must be one of those new-fangled obd-iii emissions-controlled starters yeah - theres no sensor there caused a fireif positive wire hit frame..can anyone tell me where the speed sensor is on a 95 the speed sensor is on the tailshaft of the transmission since you have a 2wd - its on the transfer-case on 4x4 models. you also have a sensor in the rear differential for the rwal system. but in 95 this sensor is only for the abs system and has nothing to do with vehicle speed unlike 98 and newer vehicles. more importantly though - what the heck does a vehicle speed sensor have to do with a low voltage problem short answer - nothing... but it would be interesting to hear their explanation .

i should add. i highly stress the importance of being properly educated in hvac repair. the dangers of dealing with the refigerant are hidden and apparent both. please take a class for your own information. in the mean time. take it to a shop and have a certified professional work on it. itll be safer for you and the vehicle both. check your local technical colledge. the ones around here will offer certificate classes in automotive repair. and yes they do offer one in auto hvac. the thing is i would really like to learn and what a golden opportunity now that i have a broken system i actually have two to get some experience. i am not afraid to spend some money on equipment i just dont know what to buy or how to use it. if what you are saying is that it is too complicated or involved for the do-it-yourselfer i respect that i guess. does anybody know a way that a guy like me could learn more .

tbone wrote yea it sounds like your new truck went for a swim before you bought it. the actual seats were probably replaces due to water damage along with the carpet. you might want to lift the carpet and look for damage on the floor boards as well. not necessarily. the seat brackets on my 99 are rusty too. the rust started shortly after i got it. im the first owner. i got it less than a month after it was built. its not severe rust yet just a uniform surface discoloration. .

with any ac car home or commercial when its opened to the atmosphere you need to evacuate the system. meaning you need to remove all of the air and moisture from the system. i have no clue what the cost of the equipment for evacuating and measuring a charge is for a vehicle but youre going to spend a grand or more for the equipment for similar residential equipment. thats assuming you have nothing to recover. on sat 13 aug 2005 081318 -0400 surfersabo spamsabo@cox.net wrote the thing is i would really like to learn and what a golden opportunity now that i have a broken system i actually have two to get some experience. i am not afraid to spend some money on equipment i just dont know what to buy or how to use it. if what you are saying is that it is too complicated or involved for the do-it-yourselfer i respect that i guess. does anybody know a way that a guy like me could learn more .

gene wrote the spare for my durango is of course underneath the vehicle and i was looking at installing a tow hotch would would obviously block access to it. so would a swing arm type of holder be a good idea cant put it on the hatch as the wiper motor is there and it would increase weight to the point of not being able to get the hatch to stay open. cant install on the right side as thats the gas take fill side. dont want it inside cause the dogs are sitting there.. and the equipment also. so if the swing arm is a good way is the a online shop selling this or do i need a custom shop and what should i look for if i go with the latter the hitch should go around the spare. it does in my truck. a swing out spare is a pain in the neck; you have to mess with it every time you open the hatch. but if you want one have one custom made. what you want is a gate style spare carrier that put all the weight on the bumper and not on the body. -- ..bob 1997 hd fxdwg - turbocharged! 2001 dodge dakota qc 5.9/4x4/3.92 1966 mustang coupe - daily driver 1965 ffr cobra - finally on the road! .

you need to change your reported readings/codes. the o should be a 0. oh should be a zero however the first code indicated 3-4 shift sol/trans relay circuits the second code indicates cylinder #4 misfire the third code indicates o2 sensor shorted to voltage. all according to the manual i have. bob az .

i agree a bigger truck will be better but the turning radius is the problem. with the short drives narrow streets and split rail fences turning and backing becomes a real problem. i have a 2001 ford f250 and a 2005 2500 ram both seem to be too long when you hang a plow on the front. fred if it is that tight without snow you arent going to get it done with a dakota either. everything will shrink by a few feet once you get some snow banks along the sides. dont know where you live but a couple of back to back storms and no melting and youll be renting a bobcat to get in there. that might be the thing find out how much somebody wants per hour for a bobcat or front end loader and price the job accordingly. condos can be a pia they may not want you pileing snow on the lawns. if you can pile the snow watch for melt and refreeze on walks and driveways. one slip and fall and it is sue city have a bunch of insurance. one last thought. a old cj5 if you can find a good one. ive looked for one for a couple of years and yet to find a decent one maybe your luck will be better. roy on sat 13 aug 2005 092703 gmt denny wddodge@woh.rr.com wrote anyone plow with a dakota am thinking of buying one to plow a small condo complex with short narrow drives and streets. any thoughts fred i dont but a good friend of mine uses a 93-94 dakota with a 6.5 western. it does fine on driveways and little spots where you have a couple of swipes and go. anything over about 6 and it takes him a while. he does one parking lot for a bowling alley and takes him a couple of hours to do it. i drove by and looked at it one time and had to chuckle it shouldnt have taken over about 45 minutes for the lot. overall hes happy with it. btw i second what roy said a bigger truck will handle it better. denny .

alright id like to know a few thoughts on witch egt gauge to get mounting solutions and where/how to put the sensor on a 05 cummins. for a single gauge the mopar srt-10 a-pillar is a good choice. available from genos garage http//www.genosgarage.com it will replace the stock a-pillar trim with one that has a molded-in gauge holder this is used from the factory on srt-10 rams to hold an oil temp. gauge. it retains your grab handle so theres no downside to using it. to match your trucks gauges either a dipricol although some myself included dont like the big white center cap or an isspro ev-series are the closest match to the factory gauges. i personally run an autometer phantom but thats because i went with a full compliment of autometer gauges. as for mounting the thermocouple you want it in the exhaust manifold where it will do the most good. drill/tap a hole right above the turbo mounting flange in the rear-most of the two passages. this will measure the egts from the rear cylinders which run a little hotter than the rest. start with a cooled-off engine and duct-tape off the exhaust tip then poke a small hole through the duct tape. you want to create some backpressure. next start the engine and while wearing gloves and goggles or a faceshield drill a 21/64 or 11/32 or even 5/16 wi

you guys always have been helpful with my dodge truck.....could anyone tell me how to check codes the poorboy way on a 94 cadilac deville.... sure thing... you go to the alt.autos.gm.cadillac group and post there... under your dash there should be a little black connector. by making a jumper wire and shorting two of the terminals together then turning the ignition to on the check engine light will blink out the various codes. i believe it blinks each two-digit code three times it does on my 90 suburban at least. see these sites for specifics http//www.obd-codes.com/faq/read-gm-2-digit-obd-codes-free.php http//www.gnttype.org/maint/malf.html .

new question how long is the meant time before failure of your typical auto ac system and what is the normal failure i really dont think there is a realistic way to answer that question. you should be able to expect 10 years of trouble free operation but ive seen many go much longer and many only last a couple years. id guess the most common failure is seal failure. -- nathan w. collier http//inlinediesel.com http//7slotgrille.com http//utilityoffroad.com http//bighornrefrigeration.com .
