AC Staying On

From : fred

Q: hi tom! i was thinking that the clutch may probably be sticking. think ti might try pulling that relay next time it happens to help isolate whether electrical or mechanical problem. fred seems that the ac in my 99 ctd quad sport is stays on once turned on and wont shut off from the heater controls. anyone else have this problem and found the cure does the compressor clutch cycle like it normally should or it it stuck on all the time if so it could be a sticking compressor clutch relay in your power distribution center next to the battery. if not then its either a bad switch in the heater controls or faulty logic in the pcm. .

when i posted that the post where you answered those questions was not available to me yet. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving on aug 7 1216 pm tbone tbonenos...@nc.rr.com wrote as you said there are a lot of factors. what is the seer rating of the existing unit does the unit have and is using a dry-air mode as mac stated they re-heat the air to remove humidity and use about twice the electricity to do it. you only have r11 insulation in the walls and that in a word - sucks! was the house even wrapped before the siding was installed what kind of windows do you have are they at least dual-glazed are they low-e type glass. if not i would suggest at a minimum a low-e solar film. you probably could also add another layer of insulation in that attic. i would also look for air leaks around those windows and external doors. does this house have a crawl space basement or on a slab if it has a crawl space i would check the insulation and vapor barrier under there as well. a larger ac unit will probably not save you any real money if your heat gain is way up there and the rapid cycling of the unit will shorten its life as well. perhaps you might want to have an energy audit done. damn tbone did you read any of the other posts i made i answered a lot the questions you asked about seer about windows about low-e about tints/film window coverings. .

repeat wrote don don@no-spamdonsautomotive.com wrote in repeat@repeat.com ok thanks for the replies but still no answer to the core question. maybe there is no way to differentiate a squealing alternator from a squealing belt/pulleys out align except by process of elimination. do the alternator tests test for bad bearings in the alternator i kinda like to find the problem and fix in one step if possible. ive owned a lot of cars. ive had a few cars with squealing belts. in only one instance it was the alternator itself. in all other cases it was a worn or glazed belt. a belt is also way cheaper than an alternator so i would start with that. fwiw i had one car that was a real pita with squealing belts - iirc i ended up using the house brand from a local parts store because every other brand just squealed - just one of those minor differences between the brands. ray .

good morning 2001 dodge dakota has the abs light and the brake light on. any idea what i should be looking for to figure this one out... steve if your brakes are working fine and you have good pedal i would look at a wheel speed sensor if i didnt have the error code. getting an error code for the problem is the best bet. .
