'99 Durango. two questions. Trailer Tow Package ?

From : davezjerry

Q: ive got the 99 slt 5.9 magnum version. manual says there are two gearing versions 3.92 and 3.55. sticker in my glove box says 3.92 i am looking at pulling a 3500lb popup trailer. the manual says the standard hitch pulls 1800lbs anything more the trailer tow package needs to be installed. i am assuming i have the standard hitch. the items in this package are pigtail tranny oil cooler some sensors etc etc.. i dont see a pigtail anywhere but i do have a socket for a trailer plug-in near the rear hitch. i guess i havent looked closely enough to see if i have a tranny oil cooler. having bought this used i dont have the orig window sticker to show if the package was an option at new. 1. how can i tell more definitely if i have this additional tow package .. either by visually seeing the components i guess a they tranny oil cooler would be a dead giveaway.duh. or the vin or some other number .. 2. if i dont happen to have this.. might this be an expensive deal to have my dodge dealer install all of this thanks much dave ------------------------------------------------------------ you must first take out myuglysister to reply via email .

walk up o your nearest dodge parts counter with your vin and ask them for a printout of what was installed on your durango when it was new. the printout will include everything that was on the original window sticker. on fri 03 oct 2003 143502 gmt davez dzins@dor.state.wi.usmyuglysister wrote ive got the 99 slt 5.9 magnum version. manual says there are two gearing versions 3.92 and 3.55. sticker in my glove box says 3.92 i am looking at pulling a 3500lb popup trailer. the manual says the standard hitch pulls 1800lbs anything more the trailer tow package needs to be installed. i am assuming i have the standard hitch. the items in this package are pigtail tranny oil cooler some sensors etc etc.. i dont see a pigtail anywhere but i do have a socket for a trailer plug-in near the rear hitch. i guess i havent looked closely enough to see if i have a tranny oil cooler. having bought this used i dont have the orig window sticker to show if the package was an option at new. 1. how can i tell more definitely if i have this additional tow package .. either by visually seeing the components i guess a they tranny oil cooler would be a dead giveaway.duh. or the vin or some other number .. 2. if i dont happen to have this.. might this be an expensive deal to have my dodge dealer install all of this thanks much dave ------------------------------------------------------------ you must first take out myuglysister to reply via email .

be installed. i am assuming i have the standard hitch. the items in this package are pigtail tranny oil cooler some sensors etc etc.. i dont see a pigtail anywhere but i do have a socket for a trailer plug-in near the rear hitch. i guess i havent looked closely enough to see if i have a tranny oil cooler. the pigtail is for an electric brake controller. you dont need to worry about that. as others have said the hitch and especially the 7-pin round connector pretty much seals it that you have the factory tow package. most aftermarket-installed hitches only get a 4-flat connector because thats all most people will use with the stuff they tow behind an suv. what you will need in this case is a 7-way to 4-way adapter because your trailer will need the 4-way flat connector. this comes with the package as well but im sure it isnt anywhere to be found. any good auto parts store will have these - cost about $10. as for the trans cooler it should be mounted in front of the radiator. it looks like a smaller radiator tubes covered with black fins. .

hey tom... i dont know if its just a calif law but here you need brakes on anything over 2000 pounds i think... we were looking at popups last month and all the ones we looked at came standard with electric brakes.. really thought the majority came with surge brakes... whoops. well then yeah - hed need to worry about the brake controller and connector fortunately most brake controller manufacturers offer plug-and-play wiring harnesses for simple installation. with my tekonska prodigy i also bought their wiring harness for dodge. this plugged into the back of the controller and into the 4-pin blue rectangular connector up underneath the dash. took all of 5 minutes to install the controller - with the hardest part being the decision of where to drill holes in a brand-new dash .

my 99 5.2 came with a factory tow and the pigtail that is with it goes from the 7 pin round to the std 4 pin straight connector no more. it does fine with the 3500 pop-up. it does however want to run a tad bit hotter in the summer. dan ive got the 99 slt 5.9 magnum version. manual says there are two gearing versions 3.92 and 3.55. sticker in my glove box says 3.92 i am looking at pulling a 3500lb popup trailer. the manual says the standard hitch pulls 1800lbs anything more the trailer tow package needs to be installed. i am assuming i have the standard hitch. the items in this package are pigtail tranny oil cooler some sensors etc etc.. i dont see a pigtail anywhere but i do have a socket for a trailer plug-in near the rear hitch. i guess i havent looked closely enough to see if i have a tranny oil cooler. having bought this used i dont have the orig window sticker to show if the package was an option at new. 1. how can i tell more definitely if i have this additional tow package .. either by visually seeing the components i guess a they tranny oil cooler would be a dead giveaway.duh. or the vin or some other number .. 2. if i dont happen to have this.. might this be an expensive deal to have my dodge dealer install all of this thanks much dave ------------------------------------------------------------ you must first take out myuglysister to reply via email .
