99 Dodge 1500 Tranny problems
From : max340
Q: i was wondering if someone can help me with my tranny problems. my sister just got a 99 1500 with 80000+ miles on it and the tranny needs to be replaced/fixed. how did you arrive at this conclusion was this something that dodge re-called no. should she replace the tranny with a newer one not necessarily. if so when did they change the tranny the newer trans the 45rfe will not swap in due to electronic controls. did they change the tranny yes see above. i can supply more information if this makes no sense please do. it may be that your problem isnt as expensive as replacement. even if it is it is better to go armed with info than simply pay for something you know little about. max i have add and my friends dont understand look!! a chicken!!! .

max340 max340@aol.compost scribbled how much were they planning on charging to repair/rebuild the current transmission you might be better served with a aftermarket trans. in any event remember to have whoever does what to clear the cooler and lines or some of those metal shavings might return to haunt ya. roy .

i guess what it is is the truck doesnt like to shift from 1st into 2nd. thats all i know its not my truck. ok if the truck is cold it may delay the shifts a bit to allow warm up of the trans and engine. it may be that the tps is not giving proper info to the trans pcm and thus the shift points are a bit goofy. as to the metal shavings there can be several causes. however if they are powder like in size and clump together like mud it may be normal wear without a regular fluid change. if they are larger it can be many things including the torqueconverter overdrive unit etc. hard to tell without seeing the shavingsand where they are located in the pan. roy makes a couple of excellent points. the cooler lines absolutely must be flushed if the trans is damaged. if not the debris may kill the next trans. as to the trans costs it may be cheaper to have a local repair shop install a remanufactured trans that has a guarantee on it than have the one in the truck rebuilt. certainly it should cut down on down time. after all this is sorted out be sure to install an aftermarket cooler as this can help with any use of the truck. also make sure that the trans is serviced at regular intervals to avoid future problems. last word have someone do a thorough diagnostic and account for their conclusions before spending $1000 on a trans repair. max i have add and my friends dont understand look!! a chicken!!! .
