'99 1/2 ton 4x4 tranny problems

From : paul

Q: hello i have a 99 that is having some transmission problems. im taking it to the tranny shop today for a quote but would like some other ideas just in case he has the rebuild is the only way mentality. when its cold it runs fine. when it warms up it wont make the shift from 1st to 2nd until about 3500-4000 rpm. the shift from 2nd to 3rd at about 3000 rpm. when it is reving from 1st to 2nd if i let off the gas drop it into neutral for a second then put it back into drive it will shift fine. also about a week ago while driving down the freeway it kicked itself outta od. i could not get it to go back in. that happened just once and hasnt done it since. i changed tranny fluid 4 months ago and it has 63k miles. i tow a 20 foot trailer about 5k lbs. thanks for the input! .

im not arguing here just trying to understand -. it is hard for me to believe that only the dodge fluid will work. im sure they do not make the stuff and that there isnt some magical liquid in it. are you silling to bet your transmission on it my buddy says there is a recipe of sorts to make the dodge spec fluid. yeah right sure ok is your buddy going to fix your transmission when his magic fluid destroys it with that said im going to have him change it out and use the dodge branded fluid and see what happens. too late......the other stuff has already soaked into the clutch plates jesus mary and joseph it says right on the goddam dipstick what kind to use .

paul wrote this is a 99 and uses +3 i believe. if it is atf+3 that is required then quaker state and a couple others make and sell the stuff. most big truck stops carry it. one word of caution according to dc memo i once read if you have already switched from atf+3 to atf+4 in a vehicle that came with atf+3 then you can not go back to atf+3. dont know why but that is what the say. jerry .

he did not use the branded dodge tranny fluid but instead used standard fluid and added some stuff to bring it to the dodge specs. could this be the problem thanks yep politics the gentle art of getting votes from the poor and campaign funds from the rich. .

well i just got back from the tranny shop. the guy could not re-create the problem. i drove it around and it wouldnt do it either. he did run a code check and found nothing. he said he could drop the pan and inspect it for 49 bucks. this guy did not instil any confidence in me during our discussion. i think ill have by friend do it. one question has been raised. my friend who owns a repair shop serviced the tranny 6 months ago. he did not use the branded dodge tranny fluid but instead used standard fluid and added some stuff to bring it to the dodge specs. could this be the problem thanks paul wrote hello i have a 99 that is having some transmission problems. im taking it to the tranny shop today for a quote but would like some other ideas just in case he has the rebuild is the only way mentality. when its cold it runs fine. when it warms up it wont make the shift from 1st to 2nd until about 3500-4000 rpm. the shift from 2nd to 3rd at about 3000 rpm. when it is reving from 1st to 2nd if i let off the gas drop it into neutral for a second then put it back into drive it will shift fine. also about a week ago while driving down the freeway it kicked itself outta od. i could not get it to go back in. that happened just once and hasnt done it since. i changed tranny fluid 4 months ago and it has 63k miles. i tow a 20 foot trailer about 5k lbs. thanks for the input! .
