98 Dodge Ram 2500 surges forward after stopping

From : jinxy

Q: this has happened a few times but only during a quick stop. im approaching a green light..the light turns yellow..i decide i better stop cause there is a car on the other side of the intersection making a left. i brake harder than normal but make the stop before the stop line. exactly then when you think the truck is making that stop something kicks in and pushes surges the truck out into the intersection pass the stop line. almost like the brake worked then decides not to..even though the pedal feels the same. happened today and i actually had to back up cause i was sticking out to far. is this the anti-lock braking or transmission stuff happening i use to drive an old 84 dodge van at work that did something similar but the surging ahead would happen once you were completely stopped and sitting there. almost like the transmission had to catch up..it would clunk and feel like you were being pushed forward. at least heavy pressure on the brake would keep it from moving. the clunking doesnt happen with the 98. thanks for any info .

sounds like just before your truck comes to a complete stop the brakes are releasing. probably an anti-lock issue. not sure on dodge trucks but on some vehicles you can just pull a fuse to disable the anti-lock. that would quickly tell you if thats the problem. jinxy wrote this has happened a few times but only during a quick stop. im approaching a green light..the light turns yellow..i decide i better stop cause there is a car on the other side of the intersection making a left. i brake harder than normal but make the stop before the stop line. exactly then when you think the truck is making that stop something kicks in and pushes surges the truck out into the intersection pass the stop line. almost like the brake worked then decides not to..even though the pedal feels the same. happened today and i actually had to back up cause i was sticking out to far. is this the anti-lock braking or transmission stuff happening i use to drive an old 84 dodge van at work that did something similar but the surging ahead would happen once you were completely stopped and sitting there. almost like the transmission had to catch up..it would clunk and feel like you were being pushed forward. at least heavy pressure on the brake would keep it from moving. the clunking doesnt happen with the 98. thanks for any info .

if its a diesel there is a recall for this problem. has to do with your cruise control. sounds like just before your truck comes to a complete stop the brakes are releasing. probably an anti-lock issue. not sure on dodge trucks but on some vehicles you can just pull a fuse to disable the anti-lock. that would quickly tell you if thats the problem. jinxy wrote this has happened a few times but only during a quick stop. im approaching a green light..the light turns yellow..i decide i better stop cause there is a car on the other side of the intersection making a left. i brake harder than normal but make the stop before the stop line. exactly then when you think the truck is making that stop something kicks in and pushes surges the truck out into the intersection pass the stop line. almost like the brake worked then decides not to..even though the pedal feels the same. happened today and i actually had to back up cause i was sticking out to far. is this the anti-lock braking or transmission stuff happening i use to drive an old 84 dodge van at work that did something similar but the surging ahead would happen once you were completely stopped and sitting there. almost like the transmission had to catch up..it would clunk and feel like you were being pushed forward. at least heavy pressure on the brake would keep it from moving. the clunking doesnt happen with the 98. thanks for any info .

i have a 1996 2500 and this was happening to me. after taking the service manager for a ride and bringing him back white faced he wouldnt let me take the truck home. they found that after two days of trying this and that it was the rear anti lock brake controller. as you brake the weight comes off the rear wheels slightly and it kicks in. they replaced the controller and i had the bigger wheel cylinders installed to reduce the wear on the front break pads.this did help but it still does the same thing now and then. they found that the same thing did happen with a brand new truck as well. .
