Q: congrats azwiley1 you managed to make this into another religious thread. really i did you need to learn to read budd not about 10 posts ago you accused t-bone of starting it and turning it into a religious based discussion! jackass. what!! how dare you introdue both the truth and facts into a thread with our vi!! totally unacceptable. sorry i shall pray to the beed god in a bit and ask for forgiveness i know i will get it! take the blame like a man. lets see here you want me to take blame for something that i am being accused of doing but you refuse to do the same for yourself. you are surprised not in the slightest! no i think ill continue to follow buddism which say i am never wrong. but you dont have to the vi was wrong. i think the vi needs another iv! .

what im looking for here is input on the older style versus the newer style cummins and of course any issues with that particular truck i may need to be aware of. only 160k miles on it. the 12vs just seem to keep running... the only issue with them was the killer dowel pin which is pretty easily fixed. since theyre all mechanical theres not really a whole lot to go wrong with them unless it was run without oil - then that just makes it angry. as far as issues with the rest of the truck if its an automatic that should be checked over pull pan check condition of fluid inspect for debris check band tension etc.. of course all the normal wear-and-tear items youd expect on a 10-year-old 1-ton... front suspension components if not already replaced will be worn out - if 4x4 front wheel bearings could be close... u-joints... nothing out of the ordinary. youve got dana running gear 60 up front 80 in the rear so nothing to worry about there as long as the fluid was changed and kept water-free. .

thanks for the info but im confused. from a dead stop transmission shifts three times indicating four gear ranges and within about 5 seconds of shifting into the fourth range if there is no load other than cruising the rpms drop again. that last rpm drop is the torque converter locking up. you still get converter lock-up in 3rd with overdrive disengaged. when not locked the torque converter provides a fluid coupling between the engine and the transmission. the engine is turning one half of the torque converter directly its bolted to the output shaft of the engine. the other half is driven by the fluid that the first half is churning around. this means that the engine is always turning faster than the input shaft of the transmission. this is why when youre cruising at around 30mph or so and you nail the gas but not enough to cause a downshift the engine rpms rise quickly but your speed doesnt immediately increase. now when the computer feels like it several conditions have to be met... speed throttle position temperature etc. it will engage a clutch inside that torque converter which will mechanically lock both halves of the torque converter together. now the engine is effectively directly coupled to the transmission like in a manual transmission and any change in engine speed has an immediate and direct effect on the vehicles speed. when the converter is locked you can vary your throttle from a little to a lot and youll notice the engine rpms dont change. let completely off the throttle or mash it to the floor and the computer will unlock the converter. tap on the brake pedal and the computer will unlock the converter. you want to operate with your converter locked as much as possible. its more efficient the whole reason companies developed a lock-up converter in the first place and it creates less heat inside the transmission the transmission fluid heats up quickest when the converter is unlocked due to the friction of the fluid sliding across the blades inside the converter. this is exactly why youre instructed to disable overdrive when towing. its not that 4th gear is worse than 3rd - its to eliminate the constant locking/unlocking of the converter which causes heat which kills transmissions. .
