98 5.9L bearing problem
From : steve scott
Q: the 5.9l motor in my 98 2500 quad cab has developed a lower end knock. its most noticeable on start for a few seconds but its always there just much quieter. this truck has about 100k on it. my thought is a rod bearing but i guess it could be a main bearing. other than this the motor runs strong. we pull a 5000 pound trailer about 200 miles every weekend for several months. were looking to possibly be pulling for longer distances next year. are there any reasons to not putting rod and/or main bearings in or is a short block the only way to go thanks for any suggestions. the change in sound you are describing sounds like a main bearing. the problem is that if a bearing has failed the chances are pretty good that the crank journal that the bearing supports or rides on is also damaged which will require removal of the crank for machining. while this can be done with the engine in the vehicle in many cases it really defines pita to do it. if it was a main bearing you also have to check the block for damage from this as well and if it is out it comes. if you intend to keep the truck for a while and with the work load you put on it i would suggest going with a short block and with about 100k on it you might think about going with a long block instead and get the new rebuilt heads and valve train as well. -- if at first you dont succeed youre not cut out for skydiving .

they usually just slide right in. are you sure the u-joint section isnt getting hung up on the steering knuckle somewhere another dumb question - when it gets hung up did you turn it back and forth while pushing on it a little bit remove the cad motor four bolts and you can see the axle as you slide it in. maybe the locking collar is gumming up the works. whatevers causing the problem if its on the spline end youll be able to see whats happening with the cad removed. when putting the cad back make sure the shift fork properly engages the collar. .

hey all ! i replaced my condensor about a month ago and recharged the system w/a freon and oil combo set with the single gauge setup. all was fine and cold enough then 2 days ago i fired up the truck and the unit was not blowing cold air just cool so i grabbed the single gauge and tested the low side and it read the same as after i initially refilled system. the clutch kicks in intermittently for about 4 seconds and shuts off for about 4 seconds quite consistently. seems like the low on freon symptom. i tried to put a little more freon in but noticed that it didnt seem to help the on then off syndrome. i did not overfill at this point the gauge still being in the blue. is there a solenoid or switch to check or replace for this condition it is hot as hell out here. i dont want to get ripped off by some shop as i was hoping to remedy this and sell this great little truck with 200k miles for a new yellow hemi slt while the incentives are on. any suggestions thanks julio well with out a proper set of gauges not the one gage check method filling as per manufacturer instructions checking pressure chart based on ambient temperature checking the super heat temp a proper leak test properly evacuated the system because all the refrigerant was gone or had air entrainment more than likely not having been trained in automotive hvac or licensed as per the epa you have screwed the pooch and you are lucky you have not blown your compressor or yourself any one of the above is your problem. the compressor cycling it is low on refrigerant leak in system a vacuum held on the system would of found it. if you did not pump down the system it is full of air you cannot evaporate air. -- coasty remove the spooge to reply what about a high pressure cut out switch blockage in the filter or expansion valve causing high head pressure and system possibly overfilled causing low side to read ok hard to tell without a proper set of gauges. just a thought. chris .

greg o wrote well you better marry her quick before someone else grabs her! she sounds like my wife. i just bought a harley davidson ultra classic or maybe i should say my wife bought one for us! a few guys have asked me how i managed to get the bike but the missus was more excited about getting it than me! greg oddly enough my wife talked me into getting a new truck in 99. she said i could get any truck that i wanted with the provision that it had an automatic transmission. i loved my 91 f-150 cc 4x4 5-speed but at the time her offer was too good to refuse. i should have waited her out for the upcoming 6-speed manual. i did get a new 99 2500 4x4 ctd qc short-bed w/automatic. i dont think it would have taken much longer to convince her on the manual but i wanted the new dodge diesel for a long time. i caved to her wishes. woe is me. ;^ .

i have a 2004.5 325/600 cummins engine ram 2500 4x4 auto with the 3.73 rear end i have one of the same only in 3500 http//inlinediesel.com/trucks/3gen/1/index.html at the bottom. i have never done better than 10 in the city and 14 hwy here in montana our highways are wide open and when i drive it i get about 14 in the city and 17 on the highway. my wife gets even better when she drives it. i love the truck but hate the mileage everyone ive taken it to says theres nothing wrong theyre either bad wrong or theyre overlooking the problem. do you idle extensively is your parking brake on have you ruled out a fuel leak how are your math skills - what do i do take it to someone who cares about finding your problem. i doubt youll find anyone like that at your dealership. -- nathan w. collier http//inlinediesel.com http//7slotgrille.com http//utilityoffroad.com http//bighornrefrigeration.com .

so how much would a long block cost dont quote me on it because its been a few years but seems to me the last time i priced a long block for a customer it was around 1300 to 1500 for a jasper long block with completion kit. like i say ive been out of the business for a while and not sure how well you could trust my memory. but the thing i used to like about jasper for my customers was i could get them a long block resonably priced with completion kit plugs wires cap rotor thermostat hoses waterpump belt ect. pritty much everything needed for a complete install with a 3year 75000 mile warr through jasper. ofcourse you would have to check with jasper on the specifics on warr and price but i had good success with them. their website is www.jasperengines.com and thier phone number is 800 827-7455. hope this is some help. chris tbone wrote the 5.9l motor in my 98 2500 quad cab has developed a lower end knock. its most noticeable on start for a few seconds but its always there just much quieter. this truck has about 100k on it. my thought is a rod bearing but i guess it could be a main bearing. other than this the motor runs strong. we pull a 5000 pound trailer about 200 miles every weekend for several months. were looking to possibly be pulling for longer distances next year. are there any reasons to not putting rod and/or main bearings in or is a short block the only way to go thanks for any suggestions. the change in sound you are describing sounds like a main bearing. the problem is that if a bearing has failed the chances are pretty good that the crank journal that the bearing supports or rides on is also damaged which will require removal of the crank for machining. while this can be done with the engine in the vehicle in many cases it really defines pita to do it. if it was a main bearing you also have to check the block for damage from this as well and if it is out it comes. if you intend to keep the truck for a while and with the work load you put on it i would suggest going with a short block and with about 100k on it you might think about going with a long block instead and get the new rebuilt heads and valve train as well. .
