'97 Dakota Check Engine Question

Q: the check engine light on my 1997 dakota 3.9 came on. i tried the procedure described in my haynes manual to get the check engine light to flash to get the codes. the light doesnt flash instead the check engine light goes out and the number 12 appears in the lcd odometer. the truck isnt running very good missing and not having the amount of power that it normally does. any ideas whats happening here thanks ken .
